Survey of the chapter
By telling us of the great white throne judgement at the end of chapter 20, John has taken us to the end of time as we know it. He now introduces us to eternal conditions, as he tells us he saw a new heaven and a new earth. Ever the evangelist, John is making the point that those who are banished in chapter 20 could have had a part in this blissful scene if they had repented.

It must be admitted that there is a difference of view as to whether the whole of chapter 21, (and the first five verses of chapter 22), is a description of certain aspects of the new heaven and earth, or whether John reverts back to the millenial reign of Christ after 21:8. It will be assumed in these notes that the latter is the case, for the reasons given in the survey of verse 9 onwards.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION CHAPTER 21, VERSES 1 TO 8:

21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.

21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

21:5 And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

21:6 And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be My son.

21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Verses 1-8 The eternal state

21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth- John is a true Seer, able to perceive what shall be in the future as it is brought before his eyes. John is going to briefly describe what he sees, as if looking at it from outside. No-one, not even Adam, could say, before the moment of original creation, “I saw the first heaven and the first earth”. He who created them could, however, for just as an architect has an impression in his mind of what the building will be like before it is built, or even before the plans are drawn up, so Christ, the one who made the worlds, Hebrews 1:2, conceived the plan and then put it into effect. John is privileged to see the new creation, without being the architect. As he languished on Patmos this would be a great encouragement to him, and through him, a great encouragement to believers as they read his account. No wonder there is a blessing for those who read the book, 1:3.
The reason God is able to righteously bring in this new creation is because His Son has given Him the moral right to do so. In theory, sovereign will alone could have determined it and brought it to pass, but God acts on principle. Unless there had been an answer given to the sin of the inhabitants of the first creation, (men and angels), God would have no moral right to sweep away an old creation and bring in a new one. But the propitiatory work of Christ has established that right, having given to God the answer to the demand His own throne made against sin. He must deal with sin, every sin, and clear Himself of any charge that He was not competent to do so.
The work of Christ at Calvary has also ensured that there will not be an eternal cycle of “creation- fall- new creation”. Every question has been settled at Calvary, and God can justly bring in a creation that cannot be spoiled. This is why the apostle Peter described the new heavens and the new earth as being where righteousness dwells, 2 Peter 3:13, for it will be a place where righteousness is completely comfortable, with no iniquity rising up to disturb it.
There is a sense in which the millenial earth and heavens, having been reconciled to God on the basis of the work of Christ, can be described by God as “new heavens and a new earth”, Isaiah 65:17. The apostle Paul wrote, “and, having made peace by the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven”, Colossians 1:20. Note the three-fold use of the word “things”, and the distinction made in the next verse, where the apostle speaks of believers. It is all things that are reconciled, and all believers, but not all men. God had to distance Himself from His creation when its head, Adam, sinned, and He willed to impose the bondage of corruption upon it. That distance has already been bridged as far as believers are concerned, and will soon be bridged as far as inanimate creation is concerned.
The reference to the millenial earth as being the new heavens and new earth is, however, anticipatory, for what is described in the rest of Isaiah 65 is a scene where there are sinners, verse 20, and there will be no sinners in the final heaven and earth.
It is important to remember that the reign of Christ has two aspects, the temporal and the eternal. At first He will reign for a period of one thousand years to deal with all God’s enemies, as detailed in 1 Corinthians 15:23-28. At the end of this period He will deliver up the kingdom to His Father, with all that He was entrusted to do having been done. Then will begin the eternal reign of God the All-in-all. So it was that when the angel announced that Mary was to conceive and bare a son, she was told that “of His kingdom there shall be no end”, Luke 1:33. The reason for that being that He would appropriately be called the Son of God, verse 35. Being one of the persons of the Godhead, He would reign eternally as the Father and the Spirit will do. The reason He is able to continue is given us in Hebrews 1:12, for having spoken of the heavens and the earth being changed, we read of the Son of God, “But Thou art the Same, and Thy years shall not fail”. But God has no years, yet the Son of God, because He is come into manhood, does. He will continue in that manhood for ever.
The apostle Paul wrote of the great change which comes about when men repent and believe the gospel. His words are, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”, 2 Corinthians 5:17. The basis upon which this happens is the same basis on which the new heaven and new earth shall be brought in, namely, that God made Christ to be sin, and He effectively dealt with the sin-question. At this point it will be fully realised what was announced on the banks of the Jordan centuries ago, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world”, John 1:29. The Messiah shall “bring in everlasting righteousness”, Daniel 9:24.
The one who believes is made fit to enter into the new heaven and earth when it comes about. All that will need to be changed is the body which links him to the first creation. This change is described in 1 Corinthians 15:50-58.
For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away- John had seen them flee away from the face of His that sat on the throne, 20:11. The apostle Peter tells us that “the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up”, 2 Peter 3:10. He adds in verse 11 that “the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved”.
Men devise their theories about the origin of the universe, and suggest, in unbelief, that it all started with a big bang. The fact is, as the patriarch Job tells us, the creation of the universe was done by God speaking in a whisper, for when He made all things “how little a portion is heard of Him”, Job 26:14. It is the end of all things that will be with a “great noise”.
And there was no more sea- why should this feature be singled out? Consider the following points:
1. Isaiah uses the restless sea as a figure of the wicked. He wrote, “But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked”, Isaiah 57:20,21. In the new heaven and new earth there will be no wickedness, restlessness, or vileness.
2. The sea is also a reminder of judgement, for it was waters from beneath the sea, combined with waters above the firmament, that flooded the earth in Noah’s day. And then the waters ran back into the sea. So as we look at the sea today we see waters that drowned men.
3. There is also the fact that currently the sea is the seal of the abyss, the prison-house of fallen angels. All such associations will be absent from the new creation. The fallen angels will have been consigned to the place prepared for them and their leader the Devil, even the lake of fire, Matthew 25:41.
4. The fact that the sea will be no more also tells us that the new things shall be radically different, for the sea plays a vital part in the climate of the earth, but will not be needed in the new and eternal conditions spoken of here. This assures us that John is not being shown the millenial earth, for that will have sea.

21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem- in his gospel John remains anonymous, for he is writing of the Son of God who must not be obscured. Here, however, he is informing us of coming things, and so assures us that he personally saw the things he relates in the book.

During the Great Tribulation, the city of Jerusalem will be called Sodom and Egypt, for it will be a centre for vice and idolatry, and the very opposite of holy, Revelation 11:8. In fact, the Antichrist will set up his image in this place. Here, however, is a city into which no evil may come.

It is called new Jerusalem because of the great difference between it and the old city. Primarily the current city of Jerusalem is noted for its rejection of God’s Son. That is why there needs to be a new Jerusalem, for the old things, including the associations, must pass away. It is also called new because it is the administrative centre of the new earth.

Coming down from God out of heaven- we read in both Old and New Testament the words, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen”, Isaiah 21:9; Revelation 14:8. Thus Satan’s city, the place from which he has masterminded his rebellion against God from the days of Nimrod onwards, will fall, and come to an end, and God’s city will come to the fore, coming down from heaven and never being destroyed.
We are told that Abraham, and the rest of the men of faith of old time, “looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God”, Hebrews 11:10. The contrast is no doubt with the fact that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob dwelt in tents, moving about on a pilgrimage. Abraham had left Ur, a city with foundations, and for the rest of his life lived in a place which had no solid base. The fact that this city comes down from God emphasises that He is the builder of it, and indeed the maker, or architect.
Down through the years, cities have been centres of rebellion against God, for the sins practised in villages are many, but when men gather in cities their sins multiply. This is why it was not until the time of the kings of Israel that the nation had a capital city, for the rule of the king was needed to subdue the sin. In eternity, however, it will be safe for men to dwell in a city, especially because the presence of God will be there.
Prepared as a bride adorned for her husband- a bride adorns herself on her wedding day not only to show her beauty, but also to be a credit to the one to whom she is about to be married. This city is in festal array, thus harmonising with the character of those who dwell within it. In verse 9 an angel offers to shew John the bride, the Lamb’s wife. It seems that in this verse John makes a brief mention of the city as it will be in eternity, and from verse 10 onwards he goes into more detail, as guided by the angel, as to how it will be during the reign of Christ. So it is probably the same city, but at different times.

21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying- so the new heaven and new earth are not a substitute for heaven, for after the city has come down there is still a heaven from which a voice can issue.
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them- somewhat of the sense of wonder at this is expressed by the word “Behold”. King Solomon asked the question, “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain Him; how much less this house that I have builded” 1 Kings 8:27. The answer to Solomon’s question is found in John 1:14, “And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us”. The coming of the Lord Jesus was the clearest possible signal that God had deep interest in men, and in the Person of His Son was dwelling among them. Christ did not attempt to build a rival temple. He did not need to, for His body was the temple, John 2:21. This coming of the new Jerusalem is but a consequence of Christ’s coming in flesh, for what He did in the body has made it possible for God to dwell among men without compromising His nature or character. That He is said to dwell among men and not angels is testimony to the bond that was forged by His Son becoming man. A leading idea of a tabernacle is that it was a moveable structure. Those who camped around it from time to time made progress. So in eternity, God will dwell with His people and lead them on into an eternal journey, exploring His greatness and glory, and unfolding to them in increasing depth the wonders of the work of His Son.
And they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God- we should remember that at this point Christ will have subjected Himself afresh to His Father, so that God may be all in all, 1 Corinthians 15:28. But this does not mean that the relationships established on the basis of the work of Christ at Calvary shall be cancelled. Israel will still be Israel, for God promised that they would be His special people for ever, (see Jeremiah 31:35-37), and the church will still be the church, for there will be glory for God in the church, by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end, Ephesians 3:21. So “they shall be His people” does not cancel former relationships, but is a general statement assuring us that all who dwell in either heaven or earth shall in some way be the people of God. This guarantees their blessedness and their security, for through all eternity He shall be their God. He will always be there for them.

21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes- it goes without saying that this will happen before eternity begins for us. Nothing subsequently can cause a tear to fall. What a testimony to the closeness to God that the work of Christ and the indwelling of the Spirit has brought us, for God Himself shall stoop to wipe our tears, as a father would. The causes of tears are now listed.
And there shall be no more death- how many tears have been shed by mourners at the graveside, as believers have seen their loved ones lowered into the earth. They did not sorrow as those who have no hope, 1 Thessalonians 4:12, but they did still sorrow, and fellow-believers wept with them, Romans 12:15. Death shall never intrude into the abiding-place of God, just as death could not stand in the presence of Christ when He was here. For the believer He has abolished death, and brought life and incorruptibility to light through the gospel, 2 Timothy 1:11.
How solemn to remember, however, that multitudes shall be in the lake of fire for all eternity, which is defined twice over as the second death, Revelation 20:14; 21:8. So “there shall be no more death” means in relation to believers.
Neither sorrow- how many tears of regret have been shed over what might have been. Lost opportunities, lost time, wasted energies- all these can cause us sorrow in this life. We should remember that God is able to “restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten”, Joel 2:25. It is never too late on earth to take stock and resolve to be better for God now. Brooding over the past is unproductive and depressing, but “godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of”, 2 Corinthians 7:10. The salvation in question being salvation from loss of reward at the judgement seat of Christ.
Nor crying- are there not many tears shed out of heart-ache, perhaps over self’s failures, or the lack of spiritual progress of fellow-believers, or the failure of loved-ones to repent and believe? Such an experience will not be possible in eternity, for God will graciously blot out their memory.
Neither shall there be any more pain- ever since the fall of man, pain has been the experience of believers, for their bodies link them still with Adam, even though their souls are saved. There is a sense in which some pain is beneficial, for it alerts us to a problem, or warns us that a particular part of our body should be treated especially gently, perhaps because of bruising. Generally, however, pain is distressing. Whether it be mental pain over circumstances, or physical pain because of persecution for the faith, all such feelings will be gone for the believer, for in the presence of God there is “fulness of joy”, Psalm 16:11.
For the former things are passed away- all those things that caused tears are now classed as former things. They are not relevant in eternity, and their causes have been fully dealt with. Nothing like the sad experiences of earth shall be carried over into eternity; they will be completely banished. There will be no dark side to heaven.

21:5 And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new- God had spoken at the beginning of the book to announce that He was “Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending”, so it is appopriate for Him, having made an end of the first heaven and earth, and made a beginning of the new, to speak again. He spoke the old earth and heaven into being, and now He speaks again to make new heavens and earth. It is a statement of character, as if to say, “I am the Maker-of-all-things-new”. Everything that is worthy of the description “new” has its origin in God. It is not just the stuff of the new heaven and earth that is made new, but new situations, experiences, feelings, joys, will all be so different to anything we may experience here, that they may rightly be called new, for they will come from God, the great Originator.
And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful- was there some hesitancy on the part of John to write, because he was so overwhelmed by what he was seeing? But what he saw others must see also, that they may be encouraged as they press on in their earthly pilgrimage, so he is spurred to write.
The natural mind would dismiss the things described in this chapter as fantasy, the sentimental dreaming of the old man John. We are assured that this is not so, for far from being imaginings, they describe that which is real and true. And far from being the thoughts of men, they are God’s faithful and reliable account of what shall be. As such they are worth recording and preserving. God said through Isaiah, “Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind O ye transgressors. Remember the former things of old: For I am God, and there is none else; I am God and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure'”, Isaiah 46:8-10.

21:6 And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

And He said unto me, It is done- as far as God is concerned, these things, far off in the future as they are for us, are as good as done. He has purposed, and He will perform. Having declared in the previous verse that He makes all things new, God now can state that it is, as far as He is concerned, done.
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end- having commanded John to write, He now assures him that as he does so he will not need to go outside of Himself, for Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Nothing can be written without using these, and all the letters they encompass. All that John had written, and would write in this book was within the Divine limits imposed by who God is, and what He intends to do. He is not just the beginner of everything, but is the beginning. He is not just the concluder of everything, but is the conclusion and the goal. If only as Christians we lived our lives with due regard to these matters, making our God the start and the goal. This would transform our attitudes and therefore our lives.
I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely- we now have a word for each of three classes of people. It is a solemn word, given the fact that the passage is about what shall be in eternity. Here, there is a word for the seeking sinner, one who is hungering and thirsting after righteousness. On God’s side there is a promise, “I will give”. On man’s side there is thirst. And the two come together at the fountain of the water of life, at the very source. It is noticeable that when the Lord Jesus met with the woman of Samaria by the well-side, she used a word for well which means a cistern or pit with water in it. This is all she thought Jacob’s well to be, a shaft with water at the bottom; water, moreover, which might become polluted or stagnant. When the Lord Jesus spoke He used a word meaning fountain, for Jacob had dug down until he found a spring of water coming out of the rock. The contrast is clear, for He offered the woman water from the source, the spring or fountain, unpolluted, running water. But that water was not in Jacob’s well. Its source was in Himself. In old time God described Himself as the fountain of living waters, Jeremiah 2:18, so the source is in the Godhead. But the means of dispensing this water is through Christ, for the Father has given Him to have life in Himself, John 5:26. He always had life as the Son of God, but He is also the vessel from which this life is dispensed to others. And this is what God is indicating here, that He will give the seeking soul water from the very source, Christ Himself. Since the water is a figure for the Holy Spirit, we have here the whole of the Godhead expressing their desire for the blessing of men. God invites, the Son dispenses, the Spirit indwells.

21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be My son.

He that overcometh shall inherit all things- we now have a word of promise for the believer. We have seen from Revelation 2:11 that “overcomer” must be a description of a true believer, or else if it is true that some believers do not overcome, they shall be hurt of the second death. This cannot be true, for believers shall never perish, John 10:28. Christ has made all believers “more than conquerors”, Romans 8:37. By the indwelling Spirit they are enabled to rise above adversity and stumblingblocks.
It is to such people that the promise comes that they will inherit all things. This can only be because of their association with God’s Son, for the Father has already given all things to Him; how can He give them to us independently? It must be through Christ that we inherit. Christ is not only God’s Only begotten Son, but Firstborn Son also. We read that “the Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into His hand”, John 3:35. As Only begotten Son all things are His anyway, but as Firstborn all things are His to give to others. The apostle Paul described the children of God as “heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together”, Romans 8:17. So the overcomer inherits all things because of association with God’s Firstborn. Isaiah 53:12 said He would divide the spoil with the strong, and this is one way He will do it.
And I will be his God, and he shall be My son- it is God’s will to surround His Son with those that have been made like Him. The apostle Paul wrote, “For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren”, Romans 8:29. The way in which this is brought about is found in the next verse, “Moreover, whom He did predestinate, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified”. Having foreknown His people in eternity, and planned to conform them to the image of His Son, God calls, justifies and glorifies them, so that at the end of that process they are fully conformed them to the image of His Son. Image tells of representation, and God’s sons will be fitted to represent His Son. This is a glorious inheritance.

21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

But the fearful- the third word is to the unbeliever, and instead of being a promise, as to the other two classes of men, the seeker and the saint, there is a solemn warning to the unrepentant and uninterested sinner. The saint has a blessed inheritance with Christ, these have their part too, it is their portion in the lake of fire.
The fearful are not those of a nervous disposition naturally, but those who were afraid of the consequences of believing the gospel. They did not understand that when a person believes they are given, amongst many other things, the strength to endure the opposition that will inevitable come because of their faith. These, however, did not accept that, and hence were afraid of what friends, family, or colleagues might think and say and do. Truly “The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe”, Proverbs 29:25.
And unbelieving- since all who shall be in the lake of fire are unbelievers, this must be a special class, those who glory in their unbelief, and promote it. A special punishment awaits those who lead others astray in this important matter. Many a religious leader shall perish because he has peddled lies to the ruin of the souls of those who looked to him for guidance. As the Lord Jesus said, “And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch”, Matthew 15:14.
And the abominable- there are certain practices that even unsaved people find distasteful, and turn away from in disgust. If this is the reaction of sinners, what must be the reaction of a thrice-holy God? All such must be banished from His presence and punished for their perverted lives. Nevertheless, these persons are listed here so they that may be warned. There are no depths of degradation into which a man may sink, from which the grace of God cannot lift Him. As Hannah said, “He lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory”, 1 Samuel 2:8. The previous verse in our chapter has told us about the princes; God’s sons, made like His own dear Son.
And murderers- God is the Living God, and “He giveth to all life, and breath and all things”, Acts 17:25. When He made man He made him “in His own image”, Genesis 1:27. An image is that which represents something else. The penny that the Lord used to illustrate a point had the image of Caesar on it, and therefore it represented Caesar and his rule over Palestine, Matthew 22:18-21. Man was created to represent God, the one who ruleth over all. He was fitted to do this because, like God, man had personality, (he was conscious of himself and his abilities); spirituality, (he was more than a collection of atoms, and appreciated God); morality, (he had a sense of what was good); and rationality, (he could think, reason, purpose, decide, and understand). Not only had man a duty to represent God in these ways, but he also had distinctiveness as he did so. He could do things that animals cannot. He could believe God, have a sense of duty, had a desire to know, could enjoy beauty and harmony. He exists for ever, has a will to act, and can translate thoughts into words.
Since man is such a special creature, with features no animal shares, his life is precious to God. (We should remember that man is still made in the similitude of God, James 3:9, even though man’s sinfulness makes that likeness very faint. In principle it is still there). To cause that life to cease is to cause the man’s vocation to cease. And since that vocation is to represent God, this is a very serious matter.
This is why after the flood, God pronounced the death penalty on murder. His words were, “And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made He man”, Genesis 9:5,6. The time before the flood had been marked by violence, and now a restraint is put upon that violence.
Note the reason for the command, expressed in the last phrase just quoted, the fact that man is made in the image of God. All who effectively erase that image have forfeited their right to continue to live, for they clearly do not represent the Living God, and that is the purpose of their life.
All who murder are to be executed. This is God’s command, which has never been revoked. God will hold to account those in authority who defy this command, and sanction a lesser penalty for murder. It is a strange thing, that if a dog or other animal turns into a killer, it is put down by common consent, (unwittingly obeying part of God’s command quoted above, “at the hand of every beast will I require it”), but if a man kills, he is not executed. This is an indication of man’s warped sense of justice, and his failure to clearly distinguish between right and wrong.
It should be noted that abortion is murder. Notice the distinction made between life and breath in the quotation just made from Acts 17:25. Life begins at the moment of conception; breathing begins later. Mothers who have an abortion, (except perhaps in very exceptional circumstances), doctors who perform it, and those who legalise it, are complicit in the crime of murder, and shall pay the ultimate and eternal penalty, unless they genuinely repent and believe the gospel. There is forgiveness for the most wicked of sins through the sacrifice of Christ, for the blood of Christ is available to cleanse from all sin, and all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:7,9. But the opportunity to claim that forgiveness is limited to our lifetime. Once eternity is entered, that opportunity will be gone.
And whoremongers- these are they who promote, condone, or engage in immorality of whatever sort. God has made it clear from the beginning “Therefore shall leave his father and mother, and cleave unto his wife: and they should be one flesh”, Genesis 2:24. The “therefore” at the beginning of the sentence tells us that this is the result of other things. Those other things being, first, that God made them male and female in the beginning, hence it is God’s will that man should marry woman. For a man to “marry” a man, or a woman to “marry” a woman is a perversion of the Divine order, and will be judged. Second, because woman was made from man, there is an in-built attraction the one for the other, and when they marry there begins a life-long process of becoming one flesh. This is a different idea from being joined in body, although it usually includes it. Because Adam was able to say “this is now…flesh of my flesh”, Genesis 2:23, he recognised that the woman was very different to the animals he had named before she was made. She, unlike them, shared his nature, being of the same flesh.
The Lord Jesus used the words of Genesis 1:27, “male and female created He them”, and 2:23,24, “For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh”, to teach the sanctity and permanency of marriage, and the wickedness of undermining it, Matthew 19:3-12.
And sorcerers- these are those who are taken up with occult practices, and who are consequently in league with the Devil. God has made it clear that He will judge those of this sort. He said through Isaiah, “And when they shall say unto you, ‘Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter:’ Should not a people seek unto their God? For the living to the dead? If they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them”, Isaiah 8:19,20. And the New Testament reinforces this, for the apostle Paul listed witchcraft amongst the works of the flesh, and added, “they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”, Galatians 5:21.
And idolaters- if sorcerers are in league with the Devil and his agents wilfully, then idolaters are those who are on the fringe of the evil, unless they become initiated into the mysteries of false religions. Little does the idol-worshipper realise that behind his idol lurks an evil spirit, for the apostle Paul wrote, “the things that the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils and not to God”, 1 Corinthians 10:20. All idolaters shall be in the Lake of Fire, not just those who have worshipped the image of the Beast as described in this book.
And all liars- all who do not believe the gospel are governed by the one whom the Lord Jesus described as “a liar, and the father of it”, John 8:44, even the Devil himself. Adam and Eve listened to his lies in the garden of Eden, and they thereby allied themselves to the one who is the enemy of the truth. When they sinned their nature changed, and Adam passed this sin-nature on to the rest of men, for “by one man sin entered into the world”, Romans 5:12. This is why the psalmist said that “The wicked are estranged from the womb: They go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies”, Psalm 58:5. Children do not have to be taught to lie, for they have an in-built capacity to do it. All shall be damned that believe not the truth, 2 Thessalonians 2:12.
Shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone- in verse 7 the inheritance of those who believe is described, for “He that overcometh shall inherit all things”. Here the dreadful inheritance of the unsaved is spoken of, not in any spiteful way, but in an evangelistic way, so that men may heed the warning and flee from the wrath to come. The saved shall have an inheritance they do not deserve, but the unsaved deserve their lot, for they had the daring to disobey God’s Son, and continue in their sin, John 3:36.
The lake of fire is the place of endless torment for the unsaved. The Lord Jesus spoke of it using the word Gehenna, and described it as “the fire that never shall be quenched, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched”, Mark 9:43,44. Three times over He speaks those solemn words, that men may be warned. Let not any think they can over-ride His words, and teach that after death there is oblivion. Scripture says, “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement”, Hebrews 9:27. But lest it be thought that God takes any pleasure in “the death of him that dieth”, the passage says, “so also Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many”. In other words, men die and are judged afterwards with a constant judgement, but there is a way of escape in Him who bore the sins of many in the darkness of Calvary. He bore judgement so that men might not do so if they rest in Him and His work.
The Lord Jesus spoke of the resurrection of damnation, when they that have done evil shall come forth from their graves, John 5:29. So death is not the end, for there will be a resurrection even for unbelievers. They shall stand before God in the bodies they used to sin against Him, and then those bodies shall be “salted with fire”, Mark 9:49, so that just as salt preserves from change, so the fire shall preserve for more fire, for all eternity. Truly “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God”, Hebrews 10:31.
Which is the second death- this is the second time we have been told this, see 20:14, such is the gravity of the truth, and such is the concern of God that we be warned. It is important to remember the difference between life and existence. All created things have existence, but not all have life. Life and death are states of existence. When a person dies they move from one state of existence to another, namely from life to death. That person does not cease to exist, for the soul continues. So when an unsaved person dies, he moves from one state to another, but still exists. He moves from natural life on earth, to a state where his body is in the grave and his soul is in hell. At the resurrection of damnation he will move from a state of death to a state where he has been raised from the dead to stand before God at the great white throne judgement. After having heard God’s condemning verdict, (for all who stand before God’s throne at the end of time shall be condemned), he will then change his state again, and will be cast, body and soul, into the lake of fire. It is this latter state of things that is called the second death. The first death meant the separation of his body from his soul and spirit, the second death means eternal separation from God in the place of torment. As the wise man Job said of this situation, “But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn”, Job 14:22.

Survey of 21:9-22:5
We have looked at the description of the eternal state in the first part of the chapter, and now we consider the millenial age that precedes it.

The following are reasons for adopting the view that these verses do indeed refer to the millenial age:

1. A link is established with the end of the Tribulation Period in verse 9 by the fact that it one of the angels of judgement that speaks with John. One of the results of those judgements was that “great Babylon came into remembrance before God”, 16:19. That city was thought of as a harlot, so it is fitting that John should be shown the city of Jerusalem as “the bride, the Lamb’s wife”, 21:9.

2. In chapter 1 John had projected his mind to the Lord’s Day, when He would reign. But he was brought back from that to consider things nearer in time. So it is in chapters 21 and 22. Having briefly considered the new heaven and earth in verses 1-8, the angel brings John back to consider Christ’s millenial reign. Having done this, John is again brought back, for the Lord Jesus Himself says to him, “Behold I come quickly”, 22:7, a reference to His coming at the rapture. So John is brought right back to his current point in time, as he waited for the coming of the Lord.

3. There are references to the sun and the moon not being needed in the city, implying that the sun and moon would be needed outside of the city.

4. There is the mention of nations, and the kings of the earth in verse 24. Now the nation-state is first mentioned in Genesis 10:5,20, 31,32, where we learn how men were divided after the rebellion of the tower of Babel. Nationhood is God’s safeguard against the whole world rebelling against Himself. One of the achievements of the Antichrist will be to unite the world against God, and this is hindered by there being different nations. This will still be needed in the millenium, because there will be unbelievers at that time, and at the end of the reign of Christ many of them will rise up against Him. The only nation in eternity with be Israel, for God shall give Christ the throne of His father David, “and He shall rule over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end”, Luke 1:33.

5. There is the mention of a month in 22:2, which is a measurement of time, and this is not relevant in eternity.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION CHAPTER 21, VERSES 9 TO 27:

21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

21:12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

21:15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

21:18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.

21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;

21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Survey of the section

As already indicated, we shall look at these verses as being the description of the state of things during the millenial reign of Christ, just as the following section, (from 22:6 to the end of the book), has to do with matters in the light of the coming of Christ for the church, which brings to an end this current age.

(a) Verses 9-11 Holy Jerusalem and its glory

21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.

And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues- it would be strange to mention the plagues of the tribulation in connection with the eternal state, for there shall be no remembrance of former judgements then. Here a link is being established between God’s judgements and the result of them, for the prophet said, “For when Thy judgements are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness”, Isaiah 26:9. Interestingly, that chapter begins with the words, “We have a strong city: salvation will God appoint with bulwarks”, verse 1. Then in verse 5 the prophet speaks of the lofty city being laid low, a reference no doubt to the fall of Babylon. One of the angels involved in the seven last plagues showed John the destruction of that city, so perhaps this is the angel mentioned here, see 16:17,19; 17:1. He had showed John the judgement of the great whore, the unholy city, and now he shows him the blessedness of the holy city, the bride of the Lamb.
And talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife- we know from Ephesians 3:10 that angels take a great interest in the church, for they learn the manifold wisdom of God from it. Just as Babylon was called the whore, indicative of the immorality, both literal and metaphorical, she represented, so, in contrast, this city is called the bride, the Lamb’s wife. The prophets often likened the idolatry of the nation of Israel to adultery, for it was love of another rather than the love of God her husband. Here the church is seen as a pure bride, with love only for her Saviour, the Lamb. He is described as being without blemish and without spot, 1 Peter 1:19, and she has been made suitable to Him, for she is “a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing”, and is “holy and without blemish”, Ephesians 5:27. She is like this solely because of the cleansing power of the blood of the Lamb.

21:10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain- when John was shown the harlot-city, he was carried away in the spirit into the wilderness, for evil always brings in barrenness and dearth, 17:3. Here John is taken to that which represents a kingdom, for this city is no doubt the administrative centre of a great kingdom, and one that is more elevated than any other.
And shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem- the word “that” suggests that John has referred to this city before, as indeed he has, in verse 2. Here he is about to be given more details about it. In 17:18 Babylon was described as “that great city”, but her greatness consisted of the enormity of her wickedness. Here holy Jerusalem is called great because of the glory that shines in her. The Harlot-city was the centre of great unholiness, but this city has the holiness of God about it.
Descending out of heaven from God- in verse 2 this city had come down from God to be positioned over the new earth after earth and heaven had fled away at the end of time. John now sees the original descent of the city at the start of the millenial reign of Christ.

21:11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

Having the glory of God- we read in verse 23 that the glory of God lightened the city, but it is also true that this city’s inhabitants are all glorified saints, and manifest the glory of Christ, being conformed to His image, Romans 8:29.
And her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal- in 4:3 John likened God to a jasper and a sardine stone. Since the light of the city was like a jasper stone, and because this particular jasper stone is clear as crystal, we learn that the very glory of God shone forth, radiating its light from the city. The apostle Paul wrote, “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ”, 2 Corinthians 4:6. We learn from this that when God said at the beginning, “Let there be light”, the light shone out from within the darkness. This is an illustration of what should happen with the believer. At the moment of conversion the light of the glory of God seen in Christ shone into our hearts. There is a purpose in this, for we are to radiate the light of the glory that is in our hearts so as to give it to others. The light is not from ourselves, so in that sense is out of the darkness, but it should shine out of ourselves to God’s glory and the blessing of men. Now if this is true now, it is no surprise that the heavenly city radiates with the glory of God, for its inhabitants all have bodies of glory, and are able to do fully what they did partially on earth. The light is clear and crystal, for there are no impurities of earth to cloud the glory.

(b)   Verses 12-21   Holy Jerusalem and its wall

21:12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

And had a wall great and high- we can understand the city having a great and high wall, for in the millenial reign of Christ there will still be unbelievers, and at the end of the thousand years we know they will compass the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city, 20:9. This wall therefore gives to the inhabitants a sense of security, and also serves as a barrier, for no unbelievers shall be allowed to enter. Perhaps the wall will be dispensed with in eternity, for no mention is made of it in verse 2.
And had twelve gates- this is the number that tells of administration in Scripture, and reminds us that the city is a centre of government.
And at the gates twelve angels- access to this city is carefully monitored. Only those written in the Lamb’s book of life will gain access, and no doubt the angel at the gate will ensure that this is the case. In any case, only those with glorified bodies will be able to rise to this city.
And names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel- one of the gates of Jerusalem in Bible times was the Damascus Gate, for that was where the road to Damascus began. So here, the twelve gates each lead to their respective tribes’ territory. In this way all of the tribes have an interest in the city. Whilst the church has higher blessings than Israel, the nation has not been obliterated. This mention of the twelve tribes must be a great difficulty to those who do not believe in the millenial reign of Christ, and transfer all of Israel’s blessings to the church.
Notice that the twelve tribes are mentioned, for the division of the nation has come to an end, and the old rivalries are gone. Hosea wrote of this time, “Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head”, Hosea 1:11. And Ezekiel wrote, “Thus saith the Lord God, ‘Behold I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: and I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all…so shall they be My people, and I will be their God'”, Ezekiel 37:22,23.

21:13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.

On the east three gates- when Israel were encamped round the tabernacle in the wilderness they were arranged in groups of three tribes on each of the four sides. But for them there was only one gate, at the east. There was only one way to God, by means of the altar of sacrifice, but there will be an individual way from God when each tribe-member has visited the city. He will take away his own personal experience of God. Because the name of his tribe is inscribed on the gate, he will not lose his way.
On the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates- John does not go round in order, but from east to north to south to west. In the millenium the territories of the tribes will be in the order, from the north to south, Dan, Asher, Naphtali, Mannasseh, Ephraim, Reuben, Judah, Benjamin, Simeon, Issacher, Zebulon, Gad, Ezekiel 48:1-7; 23-29.

Special note
It might well be asked, if this city is suspended above the earth, how any from earth can reach it? The answer to this is simple, and may be answered by asking another question. How will church saints get from earth to heaven? And how will they come subsequently with Christ to earth when they are manifested with Him? The fact is that the resurrection body will not be limited as our present body is. It will be a body that is incorrupt, glorious, powerful and spiritual, 1 Corinthians 15:42-44. As such it will be able to soar to heaven, and earthly saints, like the Old Testament saints and tribulation saints, will be able to rise at will to the holy city. Only those who are believers shall be able to do this, so the holy city will be kept holy in this way.
And if it be asked how those who are alive when Christ comes to reign shall be able to do this, not having died, the answer is that they will be changed in the same way as saints will be when Christ comes for the church. This is a matter addressed by the apostle in 1 Corinthians 15:50-57. There the apostle unfolds the mystery as to how living saints can have resurrection bodies. The answer is, that “we shall not all sleep”, (that is, not all believers will die), “but we shall all be changed”. And what we are changed to is the likeness to Christ in His resurrection body, so it will be as if we have died, even though we have in fact not died.

21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

And the wall of the city had twelve foundations- again the number twelve occurs, this time reminding us of the solid basis of the administration of the city.
And in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb- the Lord Jesus said to His apostles, “Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel”, Matthew 19:28. By regeneration is meant the new state of things brought about when Christ reigns on the earth. So the apostles shall administer the twelve tribes. This explains why it was so necessary to replace Judas after he had fallen, not only so that the apostles could present a united front on the day of Pentecost, (“Peter, standing up with the eleven”, Acts 2:14), but also to bring the number of the future judges of Israel up to the right number.
The church itself is built upon the doctrinal foundation of the apostles and prophets, Ephesians 2:20, without specifying any number, but the administrative government of the earth is by the twelve apostles that followed Him on earth.

21:15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.

And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city- it is an angel who talks with John, but he refers to him as if on a level in one sense, for he will describe himself later as “thy fellow-servant, and of thy brethren the prophets”, 22:9. This might suggest that we shall converse with the angels in eternity, as well as with the Lord and one another of course. A reed is an earthly measure, using an earthly plant, but it is made of gold, which is appropriate, since it is the city of God that is being measured.
And the gates thereof, and the wall thereof- we are told the measurements of the city and the walls, but not of the gates. Perhaps the measured city and walls tell us that they are Divinely limited, and form a secure place for the inhabitants, but there is free access through the gates for those who are not defiled.

21:16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth- the city is of fixed and stable proportions, and is not like the sprawling cities of earth, which tend to extend until they merge.
And he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs- this is equivalent to 1500 English miles, which makes an area of one billion and four hundred and forty million acres. Of course we do not know how many shall live in this city, but clearly it will be a pleasant garden-city, worthy of the one who in the beginning Himself planted a garden, Genesis 2:8.
The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal- notice that when the angel measures the city John only tells us the length and the breadth. Now he tells us the height of it. Now bear in mind that this city descends from heaven, but is not said to come to earth; it is stationed over the earth, for the nations shall walk in the light of it, as if it is a light in the sky. But now John mentions the height of it as being equal to the length and breadth. It is suggested therefore that by height is meant the altitude of the city above the earth. After all, is it a pleasing prospect to dwell in the middle of a city in the shape of a cube, with 750 miles to the outside?
Earth’s moon is 2158 miles in diameter, and the holy city is 1500 miles across, so it is 70% smaller than the moon. But the moon is 235,000 miles away, whereas the city is 1500 miles above the earth. So the city is 156 times nearer than the moon. So if it were the same size as the moon it would look 156 times as big; but since it is only 70% of the size of the moon it would look 109 times as big. The full moon occupies a surprisingly small area of the sky, for it is only 1 degree across. This means that the holy city would appear to be two hand-spans plus three middle fingers across, when an observer’s arms are stretched out fully. This would make it large enough to be conspicuous, but not so large as to be ominous.

21:17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.

And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits- again we have a multiple of twelve, and if a cubit is approximately 18″ long, then the wall is 72 yards high. If the city is a cube of 1500 miles, and its sides that high, this would be out of proportion. But if the city is two-dimensional and not three-dimensional, this height of wall is entirely appropriate.
According to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel- does this tell us that angels are the same height as men? An earthly being is here likened to a heavenly one.

21:18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.

And the building of the wall of it was of jasper- the building means the structure, so the wall is composed of the jasper stone, which verse 11 tells us shone with the glory of God, being like crystal. The wall in no way hinders the outshining of the glory from the city itself.
And the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass- the prophet described Babylon as “the golden city”, because of the riches and earthly glory that were concentrated there. This city, on the other hand, is of pure gold, for there is no defilement or unholiness in this city of God. The gold is clearly not of the earthly sort, for it is like glass, able to allow the glory of God to shine forth.

21:19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;

21:20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.

And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones- normally, foundations are not visible, being embedded in the earth for stability. There is no need for this here, for the wall does not depend on physical forces to support it. So the foundations of the wall can be seen, and are embellished with precious stones of many sorts.
The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst- the wall has twelve foundations, so each jewel decorates one of the foundations.
On the high priest’s breastplate were twelve stones, and on those jewels were inscribed the names of the tribes of Israel “according to their tribes”. This is usually thought to mean “according to the way in which they were arranged around the tabernacle”, since Balaam saw the children of Israel around the tabernacle “according to their tribes”, Numbers 24:2. Now when Joshua was investigating why Israel had been defeated at Ai, he ordered them to be brought before him “according to your tribes”, Joshua 7:14, and he began with Judah.
Instead of the names of the tribes, however, (they were on the gates), it was the names of the twelve apostles that were inscribed on the foundations. No doubt Christ’s choice of these men had this in mind, and they will be uniquely fitted to administer their allotted tribe.

21:21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls- whereas natural precious stones come from beneath the earth, pearls come from the depths of the sea. Such will have been the experience of the nation of Israel, for God’s intention was that Israel should be special to Him, as He said to them in the day when He made a covenant with them, “if ye will obey My voice indeed and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is Mine”, Exodus 19:5. God could have chosen any nation, for all were His, (“all the earth is Mine”), but He chose Israel. And the word used for “peculiar treasure” is translated “jewels” in Malachi 3:17. Sadly, however, Israel failed to keep the covenant and were carried away into captivity amongst the Gentile nations. They were hidden in the “sea” of the Gentiles, but one day they shall be brought back into favour, and every time a believing Israelite enters through the gates of the city he will be reminded of God’s recovering grace.
Every several gate was of one pearl- this means that each gate was a separate entity, so the experience of each tribe under the hand of God was preserved in memory.
And the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass- as soon as the visitor enters within the gates, he will find that all is of God, and he treads, not the streets of the Gentile cities any longer, but God’s street, for it is of pure gold, yet not the gold of earth, for it lets through the glory of God.

(c)   Verses 22-27   Holy Jerusalem and its light

21:22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.

And I saw no temple therein- it is as if John is entering into the gates to explore, and being a spiritual man, he will immediately seek out the presence of God. He does not find a specific location however, for the reason next given. The temple to Marduk in Babylon was very conspicuous. Here, all is different.
For the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it- the presence of God and the Lamb so pervades the scene that no part can be said to be more the presence of God than another.
As we noticed in connection with 11:17, God as the Almighty is first mentioned in the word to Abraham, “I am the Almighty God, walk before Me and be thou perfect”, Genesis 17:1. And He said to Moses, “I am the Lord: and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by My name Jehovah I was not known to them. And I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan”, Exodus 6:2,3,4. So at a critical point in the history of His dealings with the seed of Abraham, just as He was about to deliver Israel from the bondage of Egypt, He established that He is Lord, as well as being God Almighty. Lord will be the title Israel will give Him, whereas God Almighty had been the title the patriarchs had used. As God He has power, as Lord He has authority, as Almighty He has sufficiency.
The title Lamb, however, will be especially precious to the remnant of Israel, for it is through His blood that they will have been redeemed. The same is true of the saints of this age, for as the apostle Peter writes, “”Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things…but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot”, 1 Peter 1:18,19. Not only so, but John the Baptist looked upon Jesus as He walked, and said “Behold the Lamb of God”, John 1:31. So not only does the title “Lamb” remind us of His death, it also reminds us of His life and pathway here. So when we are told that “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it”, we realise that God’s presence is marked by the full range of His attributes, and the full range of their manifestation by Christ on earth. We should not forget that the city is metaphorically the Lamb’s wife, verse 9.

21:23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it- this is not to say that the sun and moon do not exist at this point; rather, it is that they are not needed in the heavenly city. No created object shall contribute to the glorious light of this city.
For the glory of God did lighten it- that which the titles just mentioned bring to our minds is the glory of God.
And the Lamb is the light thereof- here is testimony to the equality of the persons of the Godhead, for there are not competing lights here; they shine with the same glory. So the light that illumines the city is Divine glory, and the lamp, the vessel that holds the light, is the Lamb. As ever, He is the brightness of the glory of God, Hebrews 1:3, for it is expressed in and through Him. It is as if the lamp in the Holy Place and the Shekinah glory in the Holiest of all of the tabernacle are now seen to be one light.

21:24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.

And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it- the Lord Jesus said that when He, as the Son of man, comes in glory to set up His kingdom, “before Him shall be gathered all nations”, Matthew 25:32. He shall then proceed to divide them up into believers and unbelievers. The distinguishing feature about the believers being that they had helped Christ’s brethren, the Jewish remnant at the time, and also those who had preached the gospel of the kingdom. John tells us that “he that doeth righteousness is righteous”, 1 John 3:7. In other words, righteous deeds can only be done by those who have had Divine righteousness imputed to them, and who are therefore righteous by faith. These believers from the nations will enter Christ’s kingdom, whereas the unbelievers will not. But these believers will keep their national identity, and are described in our chapter as “the nations of them that are saved”. Because they are saved, they will be comfortable as they walk in the light of the glory of God that shines from this heavenly city. It is only those who hate the light that do not come to the light, John 3:20. This is why those who rebel against Christ at the end of His kingdom come from the four quarters of the earth, for they had removed themselves as far as possible from the light of the city, and contented themselves with the light of the sun and the moon.
And the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it- not only shall there be nations consisting of saved persons, but there shall also be saved kings over them. They shall bring their glory, not in the sense they will come to parade themselves, but will bring that which will glorify God and the Lamb, just as the wise men worshipped the infant Christ and presented unto Him their gifts, Matthew 2:11. So the nations shall live their lives by its light, but the kings, no doubt as representatives of those nations, will actually come into the city to present their gifts. This shows they must be saved persons, or else they would not be able to rise to the city, not having glorified bodies.

21:25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.

And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day- there will still be day and night on earth, and during the day time the worshippers will have free access to the city.
For there shall be no night there- there will be a constant stream of worshippers, for those on one side of the earth shall come when it is day for them, and then those from the other side of the earth. So the gates shall not be shut at all, for it will always be daytime on earth for someone who wants to come. And as for the city itself, it will be as the hymn-writer said, “the land of fadeless day”.

21:26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.

And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it- this seems to revert back to the kings of verse 24, who shall bring, not just their personal offerings to the King, but also the gifts of the nations they rule over. Perhaps glory is their response to the Being of God, honour their response to the doings of God.

21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth- there will be no way that an unbeliever will gain entry into this holy city. They will never find any way, (“no wise”), to overcome their lack of a spiritual body. The unbeliever is not only defiled but defiling, like the leper of old. The apostle Paul listed ten sorts of people that shall not enter into the kingdom of God, 1 Corinthians 6:9,10, but he could say of those in the assembly at Corinth, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of God”, verse 11. They had realised that they could not associate with the name of Christ unless they had been washed from their defilement, and this is what had happened. These mentioned here, however, were barred as unwashed sinners. Remember that there will be sinners during the millenial reign of Christ, as Isaiah 65:20 makes clear.
Neither whatsoever worketh abomination- any who practise that which is in any way abhorrent to God shall be excluded.
Or maketh a lie- notice that in these three particular conditions it is something that is done by the one seeking to enter, either “defileth”, or “worketh”, or “maketh”. There is active sinning in view in each case. These people are practising a lie, for “worketh” and “maketh” are covered by one word. As such, their activity is totally unsuited to the city of the God of truth. They have not learnt the lesson from those who perished because they believed the Antichrist’s lie, 2 Thessalonians 2:11,12.
But they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life- this is the deciding factor. Only those who believe have their names written there. Paul could write of those who laboured with him in the making known of the gospel, that their names were in the book of life, Philippians 4:3. It would be well to challenge our hearts about this matter, and ask whether we practise a lie, or believe the truth of the gospel, and seek to further it.

REVELATION 20

NOTES ON REVELATION 20

Survey of the chapter

John now tells us the sequel to the coming of Christ to judge His enemies as recorded in the previous chapter. Having dealt with the leading figures, the beast and the false prophet, the Lord now deals with the one they served, and who moved men to great wickedness from behind the scenes. Then we read of those who had died during the Great Tribulation period because they refused to worship the beast, and we are assured of their blessedness as they reign with Christ for a thousand years. At the end of this period Satan is loosed, and gathers men again to rebel against God, but this is quickly dealt with. Then follows the account of the Great White Throne judgement, and the final destiny of the unsaved dead is declared.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 20, VERSES 1 TO 6:

20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

(a) Verses 1-3 The binding of Satan

20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

And I saw an angel come down from heaven- the fact that an “ordinary” angel is all that is needed to arrest the most powerful evil being there is shows that his power has been broken, for his masterpieces, the beast and the false prophet have been consigned to the Lake of Fire. The climax of his age-old manoeuvrings has failed to defeat God. Christ secured his destiny on the cross, (“now shall the prince of this world be cast out”, John 12:31), and the time for that to be realised has come.
When Moses died, Michael the archangel was not able to prevail against the Devil, but had to resort to saying, “The Lord rebuke thee”, Jude 9. When the evil angels supporting the kingdoms of Greece and Persia were in conflict with Michael, (the angel that defends the interests of Israel), he had to call for help from Gabriel, for he could not deal with them himself, Daniel 10:20-11:1.
We learn from this that in Old Testament times the angels of God had difficulty dealing with evil angels. But now it is different, for Michael and his angels defeated Satan and his hosts in Revelation 12, and in this chapter we learn that only a single angel is needed to chain and banish Satan himself. Wherein lays the difference? At Calvary Christ gave the death-blow to the forces of evil, and defeated him that had the power of death, that is, the Devil, Hebrews 2:14.
The angel needs to come down from heaven because that is the scene of the Devil’s operations at the end time, having been cast out of heaven, 12:9.
Having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand- the bottomless pit, (the word is “abussou”, the abyss), is the abode of evil spirits, as we see from Luke 8:26-33, where the demons that possessed the man obviously expected to be sent into the deep, or the abyss. This key had been given to the angel that had fallen to the earth in 9:2, so possibly this is the same angel. We should not confuse the abyss, the abode of evil spirits after they have been judged by God, with hell, meaning the place where the souls of unsaved men go during this age.
The great chain is figurative language, since Satan is a spirit being. It was the demoniac that was bound with chains in Luke 8, not the demons that possessed him, although they were the reason he needed to be restrained. Peter writes of angels that sinned being delivered into chains of darkness, and Jude refers to these same angels as being in everlasting chains. They rejected the opportunity of serving God in the light of His presence and in liberty, and are punished in the darkness and in confinement.

20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

And he laid hold on the dragon- notice there is no struggle, just an arrest, for the Devil is a defeated and powerless foe. Notice also that there is no trial, for already in chapter 12 Michael and his angels have fought a battle with Satan, and won We often hear the expression “High Court battle”, when lawyers contest a case, using their best arguments so that those they represent “win” the argument. So it is here, except that the Court is the Heavenly Court of Justice. So by the mighty power of logical argument, Michael and his army of lawyers will contest the reasonings of Satan that, from the very beginning, he has used to deceive men. At last his lies and propaganda will be exposed, and those plans to exalt himself above God will be condemned. Every thought will be tested as to whether it represents obedience to Christ; if it does not, it will be cast down, see 2 Corinthians 10:4,5. At last, after sixty centuries of rebellion, Satan’s disobedience will be avenged.
He is called the dragon here because of the fierceness and cruelty with which he has fought against God since he rebelled at the beginning. Men pour scorn on the idea of dragons, but there are two hundred locations in the United Kingdom alone where the word dragon is included in the place-name. The reason why the Vikings had dragon’s head carvings on the prow of their ships was because they hoped to ward off the sea-dragons that infested the waters around their coasts. As late as two hundred years ago the Chinese Emperor had a fire-breathing dragon in his palace. Men like to say that the dinosaurs died out “millions of years ago”, but they have no evidence for this. It is all bluster, designed to defend the spurious theory of evolution, with its need for millions of years. It is ironic that those who deny the existence of the Devil are also those who deny the existence of dragons.
That old serpent- so dragons are distinguished from serpents. The emphasis with the dragon is on its cruelty, as we see from Revelation 12:4, where we read, “And the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born”. The emphasis with the serpent is on craftiness. The Devil chose the serpent to deceive Eve at the beginning. As there were only two humans on earth at that time, Satan could not use another person. To come in spirit-form might arouse the suspicions of Adam and his wife. To simply speak from the air would also cause them to be on their guard. The only alternative is to use one of the animals. We read that the serpent was more subtil than the other beasts of the field. Before the fall the serpent must have showed signs of great intelligence, and no doubt Adam had noted this when he named the creature. It is the ideal vehicle, therefore, for the Devil to use as his agent. We need not assume that the serpent looked the same as it is now. When God cursed it later in the chapter, it was cursed above all cattle. They were cursed, but it was cursed more. This would suggest that the serpent was degraded to a greater degree than the other creatures. Since one of the judgements upon it was to go upon its belly, we may safely assume that it did not do so before, or else that would be no sign of judgement. There is the possibility, then, that the serpent was originally an erect and beautiful creature. There is also the possibility that the serpent was able to fly, so that it came to the woman like “an angel of light”. It is interesting to notice that that phrase comes in the passage where the apostle Paul is speaking of the tempting and beguiling of Eve, 2 Corinthians 11:3,14. Isaiah 14:29 and 30:6 speak of flying serpents, (and the word used was “saraph”, the same word as is used of the seraphim), so, strange as it may seem to us, the serpent may have been a winged creature originally, which makes the judgement of creeping along the ground even more severe and suitable. In confirmation of this, the serpent is classed, before it was used by Satan, as one of the beasts of the field, Genesis 3:1, and not one of the creeping things mentioned in Genesis 1:24,26.
Which is the Devil, and Satan- the word Devil means a false accuser, and, like Satan, is a law-court term. The title Satan, on the other hand, tells us simply that he accuses, for sometimes he has a legitimate complaint about the people of God, and he loses no time in making his accusation before God. How thankful we are for the advocacy of the Lord Jesus, as He meets every charge, whether justified or not, by reference to the blood of propitiation shed at Calvary. This precious blood answers every accusation the Devil can make, for it has met every claim the throne of God had against our sin. This does not mean that we may become complacent, and not guard against sinning. In fact, it should increase our desire to not grieve the one who suffered such pain at Calvary that we might be cleared of our guilt.
And bound him a thousand years- so the length of the initial sentence is known from the outset, with no possibility of reprieve. The thousand years in question is the duration of the manifest reign of Christ upon the earth, and is mentioned six times in this chapter. Solomon said near the beginning of his reign that “the Lord my God hath given me rest on every side so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent”, 1 Kings 5:4. The word he used for adversary was “satan”, an opponent at law. So in our chapter the reign of Christ is being prepared for, and the great opponent of God and Christ is removed from the scene.

20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

And cast him into the bottomless pit- this is the proper prison for those of the spirit-world who rebel against God, not to be confused with sheol, the place of the souls of all men who died in Old Testament times. There is no indication in Scripture that Satan has ever visited sheol, let alone reigns there. That is a pagan fiction.
And shut him up- using the key he has been given. At present “your adversary the Devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour”, and believers are encourage to “resist steadfast in the faith”, 1 Peter 5:8,9. In a coming day his activities will be brought to a sudden end.
And set a seal upon him- after Daniel had been put in the lions den, we read, “and a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel”, Daniel 6:17. So the purpose of the emperor was carried out, because the stone was sealed. But God had other plans, and Daniel was saved without the stone being moved, just as the Lord Jesus emerged from His sealed tomb without the seal being broken or the stone moved. Seeing it is God’s representative who has set the seal, and there is no greater power than that of God, the seal remains intact.
That he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled- he has deceived the whole world, 12:9, but here the emphasis is on his work among the nations, inciting them to rebel against God, and to install antichrist as their leader. Sadly, there is a “till”, for he will be allowed out of his prison temporarily at the end of the reign of Christ.
And after that he must be loosed a little season- he must be loosed to allow it to be seen that even after one thousand years of the righteous reign of Christ, there are some whose hearts are unchanged, and when the Devil is loosed they will side with him against God. In the purpose of God this will only be for a little season, for all is under Divine control. The long period of one thousand years is determined by God, and so also is the little season.

(b) Verses 4-6 The martyred saints reign with Christ

20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

And I saw thrones- having disposed of the arch-rebel against the Divine throne, the narrative can move on. Just as a single angel was all that was needed to bind Satan, so it is not the Throne-Sitter, God Himself, who conducts affairs, but His heavenly delegates who administer justice for Him.
And they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them- that is, they were in session, conducting a sitting, in legal terms. We know that all judgement has been committed unto the Son, John 5:22, so this must mean that the administration of the judgement has been delegated to them. Presumably the “they” refers to the four and twenty elders who sit on thrones before God, 4:4, and who administer justice and judgement on the earth for Him. It is said of the Lord of Hosts that “He shall reign in mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His ancients gloriously”, Isaiah 24:23. The word ancients can be translated “elders”. So as the kingdom on earth is a reflection of the government of heaven, we may think of those who sit on these thrones as being the twenty four elders of chapter 4, who also sit on thrones.
And I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus- our attention is drawn to a very specific company of people, even those who had died for their faith during the Great Tribulation. They are given particular mention because their sufferings were unparalleled, and it must be made clear that no blame attached to them for their sufferings. It was not governmental disciple that caused them to suffer, but the raging of Satanically inspired beasts. Theirs was a simple testimony, to the value of the name of Jesus. In the face of the onslaughts of the enemy, and the pressure of the apostasy all around them, they persevered in faith in the despised man of Galilee, the meek and lowly Jesus, who stands in such contrast to the wild and ferocious beasts that dominated the earth in their day. They had suffered the same death as John the Baptist had, and for the same reason, for they refused to compromise with evil and take the easy way out.
And for the word of God- John the Baptist had brought the word of God about the sin of adultery to Herod, and paid for it with his life, and these had done a similar thing. In their day the antichrist will have “a mouth speaking great things”, 13:5, but these were not impressed, because they knew that the one who gave him his mouth was Satan the deceiver, and they met his lies with the word of God.
And which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands- a similar situation had confronted Shadrach, Meshech, and Abednego, (to give them their Babylonian names). Despite being named after his idols by Nebuchadnezzar, they refused to bow to the image he set up. The penalty was that they were cast into the fiery furnace. The king discovered, however, that one like unto the Son of God walked with them in the fire, and they were released, Daniel Chapter 3. No doubt this is just a preview of the experience of the martyrs of our chapter, with this difference, they will not be released, but will pay the ultimate price. What they did find was that, as God promised, “When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour”, Isaiah 43:2,3.
And they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years- this is their rich compensation for all the things they had endured. As Paul wrote about believers of this age, “if we suffer, we shall also reign with Him”, 2 Timothy 2:12. Instead of being dead because they were martyrs, they lived; instead of suffering, they reigned.

From these details we see how impossible it is for the thousand years referred to in this chapter to be the present age. This is what amillenialists teach, as they try to avoid the plain statements of this chapter. We could ask ourselves some questions about this present age, and answer them from Revelation chapter 20.

1. Is Satan bound at this present time, or does he still go about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, as 1 Peter 5:8 says?

2. Has the tribulation period taken place, and saints martyred during it, and have they been raised to reign with Christ?

3. Has the first resurrection taken place, or do we still await it?

4. Are saints who have died living and reigning with Christ?

The answer to all these questions is in the negative. The plain sense of Scripture is that the Lord Jesus will reign literally on the earth for one thousand literal years. It is true that the prophets most likely did not know the duration of Messiah’s kingdom, but they did speak of it in literal terms. We have no authority to “spiritualise” the prophecies, for this the apostles never did. Have we more authority than they? Even the scribes, when asked by Herod about the coming of the Messiah, Mathew 2:1-6, answered in literal terms; they did not make the prophecies figurative, but looked for them to be fulfilled in the same sense in which the prophets did. Christ was born in a literal town called Bethlehem, so Micah, when he foretold it, is to be understood as meaning a literal town. To reject this principle is to be at the mercy of the imagination of the expositor, who may make of anything what he wishes.

20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished- with church saints having been raised at the time of the Lord’s coming into the air at the rapture, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-58, and the Old Testament saints at the time of His coming to set up His kingdom, Revelation 11:18; Job 14:13-15, and the martyred saints of the Tribulation age also raised, at this point in time there will be only unjust persons in the grave. No doubt if there are believers still alive at the end of the Tribulation, (the multitude of Revelation 7:9-17 perhaps), they shall be changed as church saints that are alive at the rapture are changed, without actually passing through death, 1 Corinthians 15:51,55, (the latter verse being an allusion to Hosea 13:14, and therefore not originally spoken of church saints).
The unjust dead shall remain in the grave until the end of the reign of Christ, and one of the ways He will demonstrate that all things are under His feet is by destroying the last enemy, death, 1 Corinthians 15:25,26. At that point the unrighteous dead shall be brought back from the dead at the resurrection of damnation, John 5:29. As Job put it, “So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep”, Job 14:12. Note the implication that when the heavens are no more, they shall awake.
This is the first resurrection- meaning, that the raising of these martyred saints completes the first resurrection, which only involves believers, as the next verse will make clear, for all who are raised are blessed and holy. The phrase should be seen as an introduction to the next verse, rather than a sequel to this verse.

20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection- this is another of the “Blessed” statements found throughout the book of Revelation. It is an individual blessing, “blessed is he”, and defines those who are raised in the resurrection of life. Each can be said to be blessed, and holy. The blessing is gospel blessing, which comes as a result of faith in Christ. The holiness is gospel-holiness, for those who believe are “sanctified in Christ Jesus”, 1 Corinthians 1:2. Only these have a share in any of the stages of the first resurrection.
On such the second death hath no power- the second death is the lake of fire, the final abode of the lost, verse 14, and 21:8. Those who share in the first resurrection are completely freed from all liability to death. Their bodies, the last link they had with Adam’s fallen world, have been redeemed from death, and are have now put on immortality, the state of being untouchable by death. It is inconceivable that those who possess eternal life, the life of God, should be in death. As the Lord Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die”, John 11:25,26. So if a believer should die before the Lord comes, (represented in John 11 by Lazarus), he shall live in resurrection. And those who live, meaning they have not physically died, being believers, shall never die; they shall gain the resurrection without dying, and shall never see death afterwards. The reason why the second death has no power over believers is because the Lord Jesus has the keys of hell and of death, Revelation 1:18. He uses one key to lock the door of hell to believers, so that they do not go there, and He uses the other key to open the door of death to allow His people to emerge in resurrection. He has those keys because He has destroyed him that had the power of death by going into death voluntarily, thus showing the devil had no power over Him. He has also emerged by His own authority from the grave, showing He is in total control of that as well, John 10:18. So He not only has the keys but uses them, for He has dealt with all the factors that made His people liable to death.
But they shall be priests of God and of Christ- all who share in the first resurrection, the resurrection of life, shall serve God in a priestly way. This is the highest form of service, the ministering to the heart of God those things that gratify Him. And what gratifies Him most is the setting forth in His ear of the glories of His Son. In this they will be priests of Christ, too, for their priestly worship will centre on Him.
It will not matter if they are not of the tribe of Levi, because their priesthood will not be after the order of Aaron, but of Melchizedec, see Hebrews 7. After all, the majority of them will not be of Israel at all, so they will have no tribal connections. Because the Lord Jesus is a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedec, we know there is no order of priesthood other than His, the Aaronic having been superceded and made obsolete by His priesthood. Melchizedec’s priesthood was not successional, for as far as the record goes he was without father. Who his father was did not affect his priesthood, unlike the Aaronic priests. His priesthood was not natural, because we are not told who his mother was. It was not tribal, for he was without descent or ancestry, as far as the record goes. His priesthood did not depend on which tribe he was. It was not temporal, for he had no beginning of days, nor was it mortal, for he had no end of life. But of prime importance is the fact that it was continual, with no end to it. And because there is no other order, it was final. All these features were set out simply by the fact that the record in the book of Genesis is deliberately silent on them. But the New Testament is certainly not silent on the subject of the priesthood of Christ. Such is the priesthood of Christ, and such must be the priesthood of believers also, for there is no other order of priesthood.
And shall reign with him a thousand years- the Melchizedec priesthood is unique in that it combines kingship with priesthood. This was not the case with the Aaronic priesthood, for that was occupied by descendants of Aaron, whilst the throne of Israel was occupied by descendants of Judah. When King Uzziah tried to enter the Holiest of All in the temple, he was judged by God, for he had sought to be king-priest, and this is ultimately Christ’s role, 2 Chronicles 26:16-21. Significantly, of the son of Uzziah it is said, “howbeit he entered not into the temple of the Lord”, 27:2. He had learned the lesson; it is good to learn from the mistakes of others, and not repeat them.
The fact that all who take part in the first resurrection reign with Christ, shows that it is not a position reserved for an elite company of believers, but is the portion of all. John writes, “Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever, Amen”, Revelation 1:5,6. So the ones who are loved and washed, are also the ones made kings and priests.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 20, VERSES 7 TO 15:

20:7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

20:8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

(c)   Verses 7-10   The final rebellion against God) Verses 7-10 The final rebellion against God

20:7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

And when the thousand years are expired- this carries on from verses 1-3, where the binding of Satan is said to be for a thousand years. Now we learn what will happen at the end of that period.
Satan shall be loosed out of his prison- note how everything is under control, for Satan is bound and Satan is loosed simply and solely because it is the will of God that it should be so. The days when he could impose his evil will on angels and men is over.

20:8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth- we ask ourselves why this is allowed to happen, and what are its implications? Remember this event occurs after one thousand years of the perfect and beneficent rule of Christ over the earth. When, moreover, the curse has been lifted, and creation has been delivered from the bondage of corruption, Romans 8:20,21. After all that, and much more besides, there are still hearts that can be deceived.
But who are these people that show themselves to be unbelievers, and therefore capable of being deceived? By a process of elimination we shall have to say they are the children of the ones who had helped the preachers of the gospel of the kingdom during the Tribulation Period. We read of these in Matthew 25:31-40, and they are described as righteous, (for they would not have done what they did unless they were believers). They are given a place in the kingdom prepared for them by the Father. They do not seem to be given resurrection bodies, however, so they are capable of marrying and begetting children who would have the sin-principle within. It has to be like this, or the test of ideal conditions will not be a real one, for persons in resurrection do not rebel against God as some of these children of believers do. Those who enter at first will not rebel, being believers, but their children may do so, for eternal life is not inherited from parents. It is because there will be such people on earth, that Isaiah writes of sinners in that day, Isaiah 65:20.
It is those who have gone to the four quarters of the earth that are deceived. Being unbelievers, they have found that to be near Jerusalem and the rule of the King is not congenial, and they have moved as far away as possible. It was those who were on the outskirts of the crowd as Israel travelled through the wilderness that fell prey to the enemy. There is a lesson here for today, for our only safe course is to keep close to the Lord and His people.
Gog, and Magog- these are the two names that Ezekiel uses to speak of a group of nations that will come into the land of Israel in future times, and be slaughtered there, see Ezekiel 38 and 39. They come from the north country and invade the land of Israel, so the incident in this chapter is not the same. It is important to notice that Ezekiel tells us that Gog and Magog are the subject of the prophetic writings. His words were, “(Thus saith the Lord God; art thou he of whom I have spoken in old time by My servants the prophets of Israel, which prophesied in those days many years that I would bring thee against them?) 38:17. It seems from this that Gog and Magog are names for the Assyrians and the Babylonians, whom God foretold would come against Israel. Be that as it may, it is clear that the enemies that are described in our verse as Gog and Magog are not the same, but they do inherit their name and reputation. This is all the more likely if they are the names of Israel’s habitual enemies over the centuries.
To gather them together to battle- despite the utter defeat of the armies that assembled at Armageddon, Satan seeks to marshall his forces once again in a last ditch attempt to spoil Christ’s reign, and prevent it from merging into the eternal kingdom.
The number of whom is as the sand of the sea- how tragic that they should be of the same number as the seed of Abraham, Genesis 22:17. Despite one thousand years of the reign of Christ, multitudes will still side with God’s arch-enemy. What a commentary on the ingratitude and rebellion of the heart of man! It is necessary for this to happen, so that the final way in which God will deal with men is shown to end with him rejecting God. Whatever the conditions, whether innocence, conscience, law, grace or kingdom, man cannot be changed by his environment, even if that environment is ordered of God. He must be born again with a birth which is from heaven, not earth.

20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

And they went up on the breadth of the earth- so instead of being an attack on the Land of Israel, as with the God and Magog of the time of Tribulation, this is a world-wide event.
And compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city- in the book of Daniel, the saints are angels, and it seems as though there will be an angel-army encamped around the holy city, in case this very situation arises. The word camp is a military word, and was used of the Castle Antonia that watched over the city of Jerusalem in Christ’s day, and on the steps of which Paul made his defence in Acts 21:37. There will be a way of holiness allowing access to the city from earth, Isaiah 35:8-10; and see also John 1:51. We know from Revelation 21:12 that angels will stand guard at the twelve gates of the city. Notice John calls it the beloved city, for it is the home of the bride of the Lamb, His Beloved.
And fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them- if they will be anticipating the excitement of battle, they will be disappointed, for they are immediately judged by fire from heaven that utterly consumes them, with no trace left. What a contrast this is to what happened when the Lord was here in grace. James and John wanted to bring fire down from heaven upon the Samaritans, and they were severely rebuked, Luke 9:54-56. In the time of these events, however, righteousness will be ruling, and God’s enemies will be quickly judged.

20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone- this is the same place as is called Gehenna, and the Lord expressly says that it is the place of “everlasting fire, prepared for the Devil and his angels”, Matthew 25:41. Again there is no trial, for the prince of this world was judged at the cross, and by His conquest at Calvary over the forces of evil, the Lord guaranteed the overthrow of Satan, and this is what is described here. Because the Devil is a spirit-being, the fire must be of such a sort as torments even spirits. The fire burns, and the brimstone chokes, twin punishment for those who rebel against God.
Where the beast and the false prophet are- even after the passing of one thousand years, they are still there, with no possibility of escape. The same is the case with the men of Sodom, for Jude tells us that they are “suffering the vengeance of eternal fire”, Jude 7. Even though they are not yet in the lake of fire, but are in hell, the fire is still eternal, telling us that there is no escape from it, for the only exit leads to the lake of fire. So it is that the trinity of evil will be utterly defeated, and consigned to a place from which they shall never emerge to spoil God’s creation.

Should any read these lines who are not saved, then please take solemn note of what is written in the sure word of God, and flee from the wrath to come. There is only one place to flee, and that is to Christ, who delivers from wrath and judgement.

And shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever- when we think of all the torment that men have endured during their lives for various reasons, it is only strict justice that the one who brought it upon them should himself be tormented, and that for ever. That the torment is day and night is the language of accommodation, for time is no longer in eternity. Yet it seems from this expression that in some strange way the passing of time will be experienced, and a sense of the length of eternity will be given to men and devils.

(d) Verses 10-15 The Great White Throne judgement

20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

And I saw a great white throne- this is not the sort of throne where rewards and rebukes are given, (for then the word used would be “bema”, the sort of seat Christ will sit on to assess the activities and attitudes of His people), but where irreversible verdicts are issued. It is a place from which judicial decisions are made known, against which there is no appeal. It is, moreover, set up on the very edge of eternity, when destinies are fixed for ever.
It is great because of the greatness of the one who sits upon it; because of the issues involved, and also because of the great number of people, alas, who shall stand there.
It is white because there is no suspicion of corruptness about this throne, for it is the throne of God. The one who sits on it is absolutely righteous, and His verdict is perfectly just. He cannot be bribed or argued with. Men will have nothing to say as they stand before it. It’s whiteness will expose the dark deeds of men as they stand before it.
It is a throne because the one who sits upon it is King of Eternity. He occupies that throne not to oversee a process of accusation and defence leading to a verdict. The verdict has been long-settled, and it only remains to issue the sentence and see it is carried out. Moreover, because the God of all the earth does right, Genesis 18:25, then there can be no appeal against the verdict. Nothing man may plead can overturn the decision of the Divine Judge.
And Him that sat on it- we are not specifically told who this is in this place. But elsewhere we learn that “the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgement unto the Son”, John 5:22. The next verse tells us the reason, “that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father.” That all men do not currently honour the Son is seen in the next verse, where we read of “he that honoureth not the Son”.
So much for the direct information as to who will be the judge, but we learn by implication too, for God said through Isaiah, “I have sworn by Myself, the word is gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that unto Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear”, Isaiah 45:23. Yet we read in Romans 14:10 that “we shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ. For it is written, ‘As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God'”. The apostle has no hesitation in saying that the one to whom every knee shall bow is Christ. The fact that he is referring to the Bema, the judgement seat where Christ shall assess His people, is not the point. The throne of God is occupied by Christ, the Son of God.
So it is that one day “at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow…every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”, Philippians 2:10,11. So not only did His claim to be in the form of God not rob God in eternity past, (as we speak), verse 6, nor shall the bowing of every knee to Him rob the Father of glory either, for it will be to the glory of God that it takes place, and He will not only be glorified when it happens, but also eternally. God will see to it that Jesus is recognised as being equal with Himself, and thus He will be honoured as the Father is honoured.
From whose face the earth and the heaven fled away- the apostle Peter wrote of this when he penned, “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burnt up”, 2 Peter 3:10. Men may advance their theory about the origin of the universe being with a Big Bang, but the truth is that the universe began with a whisper, for Job, having described some of the great works of God in creation said, “Lo, these are parts of His ways, but how little a portion is heard of Him? But the thunder of His power who shall understand”, Job 26:14. The expression “how little a portion” could be rendered “what a whisper”. Having begun with a whisper, creation shall pass away with a noise. That is the only true Big Bang.
So the passing away of the heavens is followed by them being burnt up. Perhaps it is the speed at which they depart that shall result in the disintegration of all things. Be that as it may, all things shall be dissolved, as Peter goes on to say in verse 12. And the cause of this happening is the look on the face of the one who sits on the throne. In the days of His flesh His look was one of compassion, sympathy and kindness, and little children were happy to sit on His knee, but now all is different, for grace has given way to judgement. Job said that God “holdeth back the face of His throne, and spreadeth His cloud upon it”, Job 26:9. In other words, He protects men from the full glory of His throne; but in the day we are thinking of it will be otherwise.
And there was found no place for them- the purpose for their creation has been realised, and there is no place for them any more in God’s scheme of things, for He will create new heavens and a new earth. There will not even be a place in His memory for them, for God said through Isaiah, “For behold I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind”, Isaiah 65:17.

20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God- we read in 1 Corinthians 15:21, “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead”. Through the sin of the first man Adam physical death was inflicted on all who came from him, Romans 5:12. This being the case, it is entirely appropriate that the one who should reverse the results of the first man’s sin, Christ, should Himself be man. He must be a man to be able to die, and because by His death He dealt effectively with the consequences of the sin of the first man, He has every right to rise again. The apostle goes on, “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive”. As a result of Adam’s sin, men die physically, one by one. This is not a reference to being dead in trespasses and sins. We are born into that condition, we do not die to get into it. We do, however, die to get into a state of physical death. But there is a sequel, for all shall be made alive. Note that the apostle does not say “Those in Christ shall all be made alive”, even though that is true. To die in Adam means to fall in death by his instrumentality, to be made alive in Christ means to rise again from the dead through His instrumentality. All die because of something Adam did, namely, commit sin, and this brought in physical death for all who are linked to him. Christ did something too, namely, rise from the dead, and all shall rise from the dead in virtue of that. There is no reason to deny that the “all” is the same company.

This does not mean that all shall be saved, but it does mean that all, whether saint or sinner, shall be brought forth from the grave in their respective resurrection days.

Revelation 20:5 says that the wicked dead “lived not again until the thousand years was finished”, and then they stand before God, so there is support for the idea of sinners living again, as well as rising again. They will return to the natural state they were in before, ready to be consigned to damnation, for the Lord calls it “the resurrection of damnation”, John 5:29. God has given assurance to all men that He will judge the world, by raising Christ from the dead, Acts 17:31. Note also that the apostle declares that the last enemy, which is death, will be destroyed, 1 Corinthians 15:26, which happens when the unsaved dead are brought out of Hades, and death is then cast into the Lake of Fire, Revelation 20:14. It was by one man, Adam, that death came into the world, and it was by one man, Christ, that the idea of resurrection came in also. Because He rose from the dead, He established the principle that men rise, all of them, saint and sinner. And it is this that is in view in our verse.

Special note on the four main judgement days
1. There is the day the Lord Jesus suffered and died on the cross. “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only: but also for the sins of the whole world”, 1 John 2:2. Propitiation involves the Saviour satisfying the wrath of God in regard to sin, accepting the consequences of that sin in Himself, and bearing the wrath of God that was due to each sin. God must judge sin, either in the person of the sinner, or in the person of a suitable substitute. The only available, effective, and willing substitute is Christ. Relevant Scriptures are 1 John 2:2; 4:10; Romans 3:24,25; Romans 5:18,19; Romans 6:6,7; John 5:24.

2. There is the Judgement Seat of Christ, sometimes referred to as The Bema, for that is the Greek word used for seat. This will take place in heaven after the Rapture of the church saints. This is not a judicial session, for sins as deserving the wrath of God will not be in view at that time. Only believers will be present. The matters under review will be the believer’s service in relation to the local assembly; his service in relation to the world, and his attitude to fellow-believers. The result of the Lord’s assessment of His people at this time will determine the level of reward they receive for what they have done for Him. Some Scriptures referring to this are Romans 14:10-13; 1 Corinthians 3:10-15; 1 Corinthians 4:1-5; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Colossians 3:25; 1 Thessalonians 2:19; 1 John 2:28; Rev. 22:12,13.

3. There is the Judgement of the Living Nations, as described by the Lord Himself in Matthew 25:31-46. This is not to be confused with the judgement at the end of time. Rather, it takes place immediately after the Lord has come in glory to set up His kingdom on earth, and those alive at that time will be assessed as to their attitude to the believers who have passed through that period. What they did will show whether they are believers are not, for as the apostle John writes, “he that doeth righteousness is righteous”, 1 John 3:7. That does not mean that righteousness may be gained by doing righteous acts, for that is contrary to the gospel, and in any case, sinners are not able to do righteous acts. The apostle is saying that a righteous nature will invariably manifest itself in righteous deeds. And this is what marked those who are blessed at this judgement, for they will have shown real faith by their attitude to suffering believers. All such will be allowed into the kingdom, those who are not such go to the Lake of Fire. Some relevant scriptures are: Matthew 25:31-46; Acts 17:30,31; 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10; Hebrews 10:26,27; Jude 14,15.

4. The Great White Thone Judgement, which we are thinking of now. Other references are Acts 17:30,31; Romans 2:5-16; 2 Peter 2:9; 3:7.

Special note on the subject of death

Death is presented to us, in the main, in four different ways in the Scriptures, as follows:

1. Spiritual death. This has to do with the separation of a person from God, who warned man at the beginning that if he ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, “Thou shalt surely die”, Genesis 2:17. Sadly, man listened to the lie of the Devil, who said, “Ye shall not surely die”, 3:4. So it was that the moment Adam sinned he was separated from God, and “dead in trespasses and sins”, Ephesians 2:1. His communion with God was broken. The Lord Jesus taught the doctrine of spiritual death, for He said that he that believes in Him “is passed from death unto life”, John 5:24.

2. Physical death. As a consequence of spiritual death, man became mortal, and physical death is his lot. The apostle Paul put it like this, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned”, Romans 5:12. Physical death is the separation of the spirit from the body, for James tells us that “the body without the spirit is dead”, James 2:26. The reason this happens, even to believers, is that the sin-principle, which is the cause of physical death, is in all men. Only in the moment of resurrection will believers leave the sin-principle behind, 1 Corinthians 15:55-57.

3. Moral death. This applies only to believers. The apostle wrote to the believers at Rome and said, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live”, Romans 8:13. No true believer is in the flesh, (“ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit”, verse 9), but he can walk, or live his life, after the flesh, (which is his sinful side, which still remains because of the sin-principle within the body). All the while he lives like that he is not living the true Christian life, and those hours, or months, or even years spent living in this way do not count in God’s reckoning, so he is temporarily dead as to true Christian living. This is illustrated by the prodigal as he went into the far country away from fellowship with his father. When he came back, his father said, “this my son was dead, and is alive again”, Luke 15:24. The solution for the prodigal was to come back into practical fellowship with his father. And this is the answer for the believer, too.

4. The second death. This is defined for us in Revelation 21:8, where we read, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death”. We know from another scripture that “it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement”, Hebrews 9:27. So the second death is not a second dying, but a second state of death, the first one being when the sinner dies, and body and spirit are separated.

To return to the passage. The small and great are present at the great white throne judgement, for even though a man may not be noticed by his fellow-man, he is noticed by God, who takes account of his doings. And the great are there. Their prominence on earth has not resulted in them avoiding the judgement of the great day. They might have influenced events, and other men, while they were on earth, but they will not influence the occupier of the throne. It is not position in society that is the relevant issue here, but position before God, and sin is the great leveller, for “there is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, Romans 3:22,23.

The tragedy is that all of these people might have had a standing before God far different to this one, as they stood as guilty sinners before Him, waiting to be judged. They could have believed the gospel, and might have been justified by faith, and as a result had peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ and His work at Calvary, and a standing in grace before Him as a result. Here, however, they have a standing in guilt, and instead of being justified, they are judged.

And the books were opened- God takes account of every detail of the lives of men, and records it in His books of works. It does not matter if men did not know of things, or knowing them, ignored them, or worse still, did not execute true justice upon them if God’s laws were broken. All shall be remedied here, and full and fair justice will be administered. The degree of guilt will be met with the correct degree of eternal punishment. All shall be in proportion, with the level of responsibility, (which is adjusted according to the level of light known), reflected in the level of severity of judgement. It cannot be that eternity should run its course with matters outstanding, and justice not done. That would reflect on the character of God.
And another book was opened, which is the book of life- this is not to be confused with the book of the living, to which Moses and the psalmist referred. When Israel sinned by worshipping the golden calf, Moses offered to die for the nation, and said, “Yet now, if Thou wilt forgive their sin-; and if not, blot me, I pray Thee, out of the book which Thou hast written”, Exodus 32:32. God’s response was, “Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of My book”, verse 33. In other words, Moses’ offer to die for the nation was not acceptable, (after all, he had killed an Egyptian), for each must die for his own sin. And this happened, for those who did not side with Moses in the situation were slain. Only Christ could die for the nation, for He alone was sinless.
David wrote a psalm in which he spoke of God’s omniscience. And this extended even to when he was in his mother’s womb. He wrote, “My substance was not hid from Thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eye did see My substance being yet unperfect; and in Thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them”, Psalm 139:13,14. So we learn that not only does God have a book in which he records all that are alive upon the earth, and blots out their names when they die, but he records the unborn also, for they are living also. Moreover, He goes into detail about the physical condition of the unborn. Those who advocate, or go through with, or carry out abortions, should take note of this, for this passage declares it to be murder. It is a sad commentary on life today in the world that you are not safe in the womb, and you are not safe in old age. There are those of murderous intent who would carry out their wicked agenda at both ends of our life-span if they could. How thankful we should be that the Spirit of God restrains the lawlessness of men.
So much for the book of the living, but our passage speaks of the book of life. Whereas the former is of those who have natural life, the latter is the catalogue of those who have eternal life. The Lord Jesus exhorted the seventy disciples He had sent forth to preach to rejoice because their names were written in heaven, Luke 10:30, and this was true of those who had helped the apostle Paul in his evangelism, Philippians 4:3. Where those names were written is learned from Revelation 13:8, which speaks of “the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world”. And in case we think this means that the Lamb is slain from the foundation of the world, we learn from the later reference that there are those “whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world”, Revelation 17:8, meaning they were not believers. Of course it is true that the Lord Jesus, as God’s Lamb, was foreordained before the foundation of the world, 1 Peter 1:20, and our verse does not deny that, nor does it assert it.
So the names are written from the foundation of the world, and in God’s foreknowledge they were inscribed there to assure His people that their position before Him is secure, for their names are on His membership-roll. This book is opened to show that the names of those standing before the throne are not, in fact, inscribed there. There may be many at that day who will claim to be believers, but consultation with this book will show the falsity of their claim.
And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works- even though they are in resurrection conditions, (for they are standing), these are still described as dead, for they are dead in trespasses and sins. Their judgement will be in exact proportion to the seriousness of their sins, and the assessment will be made formally by the judge by reference to the books, (for each has his own book), so they will have no excuse.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it- John now explains how it was that he could see the dead stand before God. Is this a metaphor of some sort, or is this real? It is real, for John goes into detail. Those who had been buried or drowned at sea, and had no known and marked grave, these are not exempt from the call of the voice of the Son of Man, as He summons them from their place. No matter if their bodies have been devoured by the beasts of the sea. The God of resurrection will recall it all. After all, the apostle, when writing of the resurrection of the saints, says, “It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption”, 1 Corinthians 15:42, the “it” referring to the body. So it matters not how long a body has been disintegrating in the grave, it, (the same body that was buried), will be raised. How this will be accomplished we are not told, but it will certainly take place. There is a sense in which a man’s body is not only an item, but an idea. After all, millions of cells in that body die and are replaced every day, so we go to sleep with a different body to the one we woke up with. Yet we do not hesitate to say it is the same body.
And death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them- having established that the body will be brought back from the most difficult place from which to bring it, John is now free to speak in less literal terms, and refers to the place where the body is, death, and the place where the soul is, hell. These are not only locations, but forces, and they are here compelled to give up their prey by the superior power of Christ, the raiser of the dead. Even by this action He is glorified, for He is “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead”, Romans 1:4. Every time the dead are raised, whether during the ministry of Christ, or at His own resurrection, or when the church saints are raised at the rapture, or when Old Testament saints are raised at His coming, or now here at the end of time, He is glorified. The Lord Jesus taught that the unsaved will be reunited with their bodies, and will be “salted with fire”, Mark 9:48,49. This means that just as meat is salted to preserve it, so men shall find that the very fire that torments them is the fire that preserves them. They shall never be burnt up, and so escape the judgement.
And they were judged every man according to their works- the unsaved will be reunited with their bodies, so they will stand before God in the very body in which they sinned against Him, and which they used to further their own interests, not His. Again we are told that the judgement is according to their works. There will be a strict correlation between what they did and what they will receive, for “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”, Galatians 6:7.

20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire- having been emptied of their contents, death that claimed the body and hell that claimed the soul shall be forever empty, for they are here said, in figurative language, to be cast into the Lake of Fire. They will never again have a separate existence, thus warning us that the only place for the unsaved in eternity is in the Lake of Fire. This is what the apostle Paul referred to when he wrote, “For He must reign till He hath put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death”, 1 Corinthians 15:26. So death will be abolished, or made of no effect at the end of Christ’s reign. It will never claim anyone any more, and God will be vindicated when this happens, for He will have shown Himself stronger that all His foes as Christ defeats them one by one.
This is the second death- the “this” refers to the lake of fire, not the casting of death and hell into the lake of fire. We see this from 21:8, where sinners are said to “have their part in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death”. So the second death is a constant state of separation from God in a place of torment. With heaven and earth gone away, death and hell abolished, there is only one place for the sinner to be.

20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire- one of the the last actions before the unsaved reach their final, eternal destination, is to consult the book of life. God knows that their names are not there, for they have never believed the truth, but to assure them that their judgement is fair and just, it is shown that their names are in fact absent from the book.

We know that just before men enter into their eternal ruin they will be required to do something. We read that God has exalted the Lord Jesus after His obedience to the extent of enduring the cross. /he has also given Him a name which is above every name. This has a purpose, namely “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”, Philippians 2:9-11. So the giving of the name is so that every knee shall bow to Christ, and every tongue should confess Him Lord. And this men will do when the proceedings of the great white throne have concluded. So it will be that every creature which is currently either in heaven, or on earth, or in hell, shall bow and confess. No being shall exist anywhere that does not acknowledge the Deity of Christ.

Is is not the wise thing to do to acknowledge this now, and receive blessing, rather than wait, and receive judgement? As the apostle wrote about the word of the gospel:

“But what saith it?

‘The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart’,

that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,

and shalt believe in thine heart

that God hath raised Him from the dead,

thou shalt be saved.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;

and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For the scripture saith, ‘Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed’.

For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek:

for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.

For ‘Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved'”, Romans 10:8-13.

REVELATION 19

REVELATION 19

Survey of the chapter
In 18:20 the call came to the heavens, and in particular to the holy apostles and prophets, to rejoice that God had judged the great whore. In this chapter we have the response to that call. There follows the description of the coming of Christ to judge, and the consequences for the armies of the beast.

Structure of the chapter

(a) Verses 1-6 Rejoicing that the judgement of the whore has taken place
(b) Verses 7-10 Rejoicing that the marriage of the Lamb has come
(c) Verses 11-16 Intervention by our great God and Saviour
(d) Verses 17-21 Invitation to the supper of the great God

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION CHAPTER 19, VERSES 1 TO 10:

19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

19:2 For true and righteous are His judgments: for He hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand.

19:3 And again they said, Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

19:4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

19:5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye His servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great.

19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready.

19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

(a) Verses 1-6 Rejoicing that the judgement of the whore has taken place

19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven- on earth the whore dominated “peoples, multitudes, and nations, and tongues”, 17:15. These were the Devil’s people, but now God’s people rejoice in heaven over His triumph. They are no longer divided into nations and language-groupings, for such things are not relevant in heaven. Despite being “much people”, they rejoice with one great voice, united in their praise of God.
Saying, Alleluia- this is the equivalent to the Old Testament “Hallelujah”. meaning “Praise to God”. That which the psalmist anticipated is coming to pass.
Salvation- God alone could rescue the earth from the tyranny of the whore, and at last He has done it, and the salvation is attributed to Him alone.
And glory- the whore sought glory for herself, but this has come to an end, and glory is given only to God.
And honour- whereas glory is official, honour is moral, and indicates that God has dealt with the whore in a manner compatible with His character. A whore is by definition dishonourable, but she has not been dealt with after her character, but after God’s. He has met and defeated dishonour by honour.
And power- the whore had built up power and influence over the centuries, but it has all come to nought now that God has exerted His rights, and destroyed her.
Unto the Lord our God- the earth at this time will be filled with those who worship a man as god, and by so doing, ascribe god-hood to Satan, which is what he has striven for from the outset. He has been completely defeated, and now heaven is filled with those who recognise His claims over them, and give worship to Him.

19:2 For true and righteous are His judgements: for He hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand.

For true and righteous are His judgements- those in heaven rejoice that Gods judgements are true to His nature, the one true God, and are also strictly correct. He can never be bribed, as the kings of the earth had been so as to give allegiance and honour to the whore. He can be relied upon to assess things without any miscarriage of justice. After all, He Himself is the Absolute Standard of justice and truth.
For He hath judged the great whore- not only does heaven rejoice that God is true and righteous in His judgements, but that He has put that judgement into effect. For long centuries, in His wisdom, this did not happen, but now it has. The time has come for the Bride of the Lamb to be revealed to earth, and her rival must be removed first. The judgement of the great whore is in chapter 18, where she is likened to a city, so the city and the woman are the same, and the two chapters speak of the same system. In chapter 17 it was the damage she inficted on men, but in chapter 18 it is the destruction inflicted on her by God.
Which did corrupt the earth with her fornication- none only was the whore responsible for corrupting the morals of men, she also enticed them away from God, and ultimately paved the way for antichrist to be worshipped. When Israel went into idolatry, the prophets often spoke of it as adultery, for the nation was the wife of Jehovah. Here, fornication is in view, for the nations had no relationship with God to break off.
And hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand- ever since the time of Babel, the Babylon-principle has been behind the events of earth, and in particular, the persecution of the true people of God. At last the time of recompense for the accumulated evils of the centuries has come. We have read in 18:24 that “in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth”.

19:3 And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

And again they said, Alleluia- this double ascription of praise shows the fervency of their feelings, and it is an Alleluia that shall resound throughout all eternity.
And her smoke rose up for ever and ever- if the ascription of praise lasts for ever, so does the remembrance of the wicked system centred in Babylon. But she will only be remembered as a burning wreck, not as a beautiful bride, as in the case of the Lamb’s wife.

19:4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne- those who administer for God, and those who guard the interests of the earth both worship God for what He has done in judging the great whore, for they know she was a threat to God’s interests, and to those of the men of earth also.
Saying, Amen; Alleluia- they add their Amen to what the saints in heaven say, and follow up with their own Alleluia, for they know what went on behind the scenes through the centuries. This is the last time the four and twenty elders are mentioned specifically, although they are probably meant by the “they” of 20:4.

19:5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye His servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great.

And a voice came out of the throne- since this voice calls to all God’s servants, which encompasses angels and men, the voice cannot be of an angel or a man. Could we say it is the metaphorical voice of the throne, that which sums up the demands of that throne? There had been voices from the throne in 11:19. On the other hand, the voice does say “our God”, suggesting it is a real person speaking.
Saying, Praise our God, all ye His servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great- this is probably a call to believers on earth to join in the praise of heaven. In particular it would refer to the remnant of Israel, and also to the multitude of Gentiles saved out of the Great Tribulation.

19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude- there is a three-fold description of the praise of this company. It is a multitude, so it is people that are praising. Like those in heaven in verse 1, despite being many they speak with one voice.
And as the voice of many waters- again there is one voice, but this time the over-powering sound is noticed. They drown out all competition.
And as the voice of mighty thunderings- this is the awe-inspiring nature of their praise. Like a mighty thunder roll, it demands attention.
Saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth- this is the fourth Alleluia of the chapter, and impresses us with the exuberance of the heavenly singers. Before, the praise was to do with God’s judgements, so in a sense was for negative things. Here it is plainly positive, as they rejoice in the reign of the one who has shown Himself to be all-powerful. The long reign of the Devil and his agents is over, and the kingdom of God is about to manifest itself on the earth. This has been anticipated throughout the book, for instance in chapter 11:15. Indeed, it has been anticipated from the very beginning of time, for the Lord Jesus spoke of “the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”, Matthew 25:34. Alas, the Prince of this world, the Devil, sought to establish his kingdom instead. He is now seen to be utterly frustrated. Instead of being on the throne, in 20:3 he is shut up in the deepest dungeon.

(b) Verses 7-10 Rejoicing that the marriage of the Lamb has come

19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready.

Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him- if the kingdom of God is about to be manifest, and Christ is the one manifesting it, then those who shall reign with Him must be prepared. The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, “if we suffer, we shall also reign with Him”, 2 Timothy 2:12. This is a cause of great rejoicing, and a reason to honour God, for He has worked through the centuries to achieve this object, even of forming a company to be the bride of His Son. He said at the beginning that it was not good that the man should be alone, and this was true of the first Adam, and also of the last Adam.
For the marriage of the Lamb is come- in the Old Testament, the nation of Israel was the wife of Jehovah. He had drawn her to Himself into the wilderness, and proposed to her at Sinai, and she accepted. The nation was unfaithful to Him, however, and instead of being true to the covenant, in the words of Jeremiah 31:32, “which My covenant they break, although I was a husband unto them, saith the Lord”. The major way in which they broke the marriage-covenant of Sinai was by descending into idolatry, thus breaking the first two commandments. The prophets likened this to adultery. In a future day God will make a new covenant with the nation of Israel, totally different to the law-covenant at Sinai. It will be a grace-covenant on the basis of Calvary.
Now however, the nation having rejected Christ, God had revealed His plan to provide a bride for Christ personally, suited to the fact that He has become man. He has purchased Himself a bride at Calvary, for “Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it”, Ephesians 5:23.
And His wife hath made herself ready- in Israel under the betrothal system, from the time a woman was espoused to a husband, she was legally reckoned to be his wife. We see this in the case of Mary and Joseph, for the angel spoke of “Mary thy wife”, Matthew 1:20, even though they were not married. This was because they were betrothed. This is why it is the Lamb’s wife that has made herself ready, even though the wedding has not yet taken place. The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians to tell them “I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ”, 2 Corinthians 11:2.
There is a real sense in which the Lamb has made her ready, for He has loved, purchased, sanctified, cleansed, nourished and cherished her, to use the phrases found in Ephesians 5. The Lamb Himself is without blemish and without spot, 1 Peter 1:19, and it is necessary for her to be this also, so that she may be meet or suitable for Him. He will ensure that He can present the church to Himself, a church that is glorious, “without spot or wrinkle or any such thing”.
Since the church has been espoused or betrothed to one husband, it is important that her affections be not divided. So the wife must make herself ready by being loyal and true to her beloved, and not allowing anything to come between them. She must also prepare for her wedding day. In olden times, an unmarried woman was called a spinster, for she was reckoned to be preparing her trousseau, spinning and sewing so that she could be acceptable to her husband on the wedding day. So it is that true believers are engaged in those things which will contribute to the beauty of the bride on the wedding day.

19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white- that which she had prepared was approved by heaven, and she was allowed to wear it. It was the custom in the east for the wedding guests to be given a wedding garment. See Matthew 22:1
, but the bride here has provided her own. It is of fine linen, the product of earth, yet it was the material that was used to clothe the priests in the tabernacle and temple, so it is the choice of heaven. These garments are not soiled with the defilements of earth, but they shine in all their stunning whiteness.
For the fine linen is the righteousness of saints- this signifies the accumulated works of the saints as they have given expression to their faith by the doing of works. They had not been saved by works, but had been saved unto good works, Ephesians 2:10. Many if not most of those works had been hidden, but now the time has come for them to be put on display, not for the glory of the bride, but the bridegroom.

19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

And he saith unto me, Write- special attention is drawn to the next statement by the word “write”. John had been instructed to write in a general way in 1:11, but twice the command comes again. In 14:13 John was commanded to write the blessing for those who die in the Lord. Here the blessing is to be called to the marriage supper of the Lamb.
Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb- there is no record of this taking place in heaven, so the supper is on earth, even though the marriage ceremony is in heaven. Those called or invited to the supper are the saved of the Old Testament, and the Tribulation Period, summoned to wonder at what God has done during this present age. John the Baptist described himself as the friend of the bridegroom, but he that had the bride was the bridegroom, that is, Christ, John 3:28-30. In the ages to come God intends to “show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus”, Ephesians 2:7. The millenial age is the first of those ages. It will begin when Christ comes with the church, when “He shall come to be glorified in His saints, and to be admired in all them that believe”, 2 Thessalonians 1:10. The world will be amazed at the beauty of the bride, and this will be to His glory, for He has made her what she is.
And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God- this may refer to the sayings throughout the book which have the character of blessings, one of which has just been spoken. They are seven in number as follows:

1. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand”, 1:3.

2. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth”, 14:13.

3. “Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame”, 16:15.

4. “Blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb”, 19:9.

5. “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years”.

6. “Blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book”, 22:7.

7. “Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city”, 22:14.

John has just heard the central one of these seven blessings, and the prospects that these blessings from God hold out, has overwhelmed him. So much so that he forgets himself, and as the next verse says, falls down to worship the one who brings the sayings, as if he is the one who is doing the blessing, and not God.

19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

And I fell at his feet to worship him- it is remarkable that John, of all people, should fall down to worship a creature, especially as the call had come in verse 5 to all God’s servants, to praise Him. John had recorded the words of the Son of God when He said, “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgement unto the Son: that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father”, John 5:22. One of the prime ways in which the Father is honoured is when His creatures acknowledge that He alone is worthy of worship. So if the Son is to be honoured in the same way as the Father, then no other must be worshipped. John has forgotten this in the excitement of the moment, as such momentous events are bought before his eyes. Sadly, he will repeat this mistake in 22:8,9.
And he said unto me, See thou do it not- John is met with an immediate rebuke. As a heavenly being, the one who is speaking to John had seen the rebellion of Lucifer take place, when a creature sought the worship that is only due to God. He had seen the disastrous consequences of that rebellion, and he knew that it was going to be duplicated on the earth, with a man sitting in the temple of God claiming Divine honours for himself.
I am thy fellowservant- as an spirit-creature, he was a servant of God. But he was the fellowservant of John, and by describing himself like this, he gently rebukes him again. To be a servant of God is by definition to be a worshipper of God, and no-one else. The tragedy with Israel was that they served idols.
And of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus- not only is this one a fellowservant of John in his day, but will also be fellowservant of those in the tribulation age whom the Lord calls “these My brethren”, Matthew 25:40. They will face the great pressure to do what the Lord Jesus refused to do, namely, worship Satan, for the antichrist, who will be dominant in their day, in seeking to sit in the temple as God, will in fact be attracting worship to the evil one himself. In such a dark day, the testimony to who Jesus is will be found in the hearts of these he calls his brethren, so they work together, in their respective spheres, for the sake of the cause of God.
Worship God- this command is not just for John’s benefit, but for all, believer or unbeliever. God deserves the worship from His creatures that being their Creator demands. The apostle Paul wrote of the folly of those who, refusing the obvious testimony of creation to the power and glory of the Creator, turned to the worship of the creature, Romans 1:18-23. Believers, of all people, should ensure that they give God His due, for He is their God, and they owe everything to Him.
For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy- the essence or vital part of prophecy is not so that we may have our curiosity about the future gratified. Rather, it is that Jesus, the man after God’s own heart, may be glorified and enhanced in our minds. If He is, then we shall not make the mistake of worshipping an angel. Very near the end of the book John is told, “I Jesus have sent Mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches”, 22:16. Perhaps this suggests that the “he” of verse 9 is the angel of Jesus.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION CHAPTER 19, VERSES 11 TO 21:

19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.

19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself.

19:13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God.

19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

19:15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

19:16 And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army.

19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of Him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of His mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

(c) Verses 11-16 Intervention by our great God and Saviour

19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.

And I saw heaven opened- this is the beginning of the actual manifestation and revelation of Jesus Christ to the world. He has been hidden from the eyes of men for so many centuries, but now He is going to be unveiled. The boy-king Joash was hidden in the temple, then there came the moment when he was revealed, 2 Chronicles 22:12;23:11. Throughout this book there have been partial revelations, whether to John in chapter 1, or to the churches in chapter 2, or in chapters 4 to 18 as He intervenes and judges the world for its wickedness and rebellion. Now the time has come for Him to intervene in person.
And behold a white horse- He had ridden into Jerusalem on an ass, the preferred mode of travel for princely men, but now He is riding a war-horse, as He comes out to do battle with the forces of evil. That the horse is white is a reflection on the character of the rider, who has no stain on His character. It also makes Him the more conspicuous.
And He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True- in 6:1 the antichrist was seen on a white horse as he came to delude and deceive. This one deceives none, for He is faithful to people and true to His God, whose cause He upholds.
And in righteousness He doth judge and make war- the first time He came He rebuked those disciples who wanted to call down fire upon men, Luke 9:54-56, for, as He said, “The Son of man came not to destroy men’s lives but to save them”. Now it is different, for grace has been spurned, and God’s patience has become exhausted. There is nothing left but judgement. The apostle Paul was summoned by the philosophers to Mar’s Hill in Athens. Now Mars was one of the Roman false gods, who was to them the god of war. When Paul had spoken to them, having exposed idolatry as illogical, he announced that God “now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead”, Acts 17:31. The children of Israel sang on the banks of the Red Sea, “The Lord is a man of war: The Lord is His name”. When the Lord Jesus comes, (He who is God manifest in the flesh), the real God of war will burst upon the scene, and will judge the world in strict justice.

19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself.

His eyes were as a flame of fire- this speaks of His all-discerning and all penetrating ability in judgement. He will burn up all that He sees to be contrary to God.
And on His head were many crowns- there are two words for crown used in the New Testament, this one, “diademata”, which signifies an inherited crown, and the other, “stephanos”, which denotes an earned crown. He has a right to both, but here He comes with all the authority that comes because He is who He is. All judgement has been given to Him because He is Son of God, John 5:22, and because He is Son of man, verse 27. He is also King of Israel, a Divine title, Isaiah 43:15, and the Judge of all the earth, Genesis 18:25. Isaiah wrote, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon His shoulder: And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace”, 9:6.
And He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself- this is a very personal name that He has been given for the occasion, perhaps denoting a particular feature of His character that will be especially relevant at the time. That no man knows it shows it is not written for all to see, but is hidden away on His person.

19:13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God.

And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood- it might seem strange that He comes out of heaven like this. We know from Isaiah 63:1-6 that His garments will be red with the blood of the slain after He has judged men, but John is describing His appearance as He comes out of heaven. When Joseph’s brothers sold Joseph, they deceived their father into thinking that he was dead by showing him Joseph’s garment which they had dipped in the blood of a goat. Years later, when Joseph brought upon both his father and his brothers a time of tribulation, (we might call it the time of Jacob’s trouble, see Jeremiah 30:7), they remembered what they had done to Joseph, even though they did not yet know it was Joseph that was dealing with them. They had his blood on their conscience, so that when trouble came, they immediately thought it to be judgement because of their treatment of Joseph. A similar thing is happening here, as the world, and in particular the nation of Israel, are reminded by His vesture of the way they shed the blood of God’s Son.
And His name is called The Word of God- John had begun his writings with the statement that “In the beginning was the Word”, John 1:1. He then went on, “And the Word was made flesh”, verse 14. So he referred to Christ in eternity, then Christ incarnate, and now he is telling us that, as He comes into the world again, His name is called the Word of God. Everything He was before is still intact. Every word He spoke before is still true and relevant. He came to bring life to men, hence the apostle calls the gospel “the word of life”, 1 John 1:1. But now He is coming to bring wrath and judgement.

19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses- this is the event the Lord Jesus referred to when He said “When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory”, Matthew 25:31. Enoch had foretold this, Jude tells us, when he prophesied “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgement upon all”, Jude 14,15. The armies of the antichrist, even though they have Satan on their side, will be no match for the angel-armies of heaven. They too will be on white horses. What an awe-inspiring sight for the believers on earth, and a great comfort as at last they see Christ intervening on their behalf. But how devastating for the followers of antichrist as they realise that their judgement has come.
Clothed in fine linen, white and clean- Christ will not defeat like with like. He will meet and defeat the Lawless One with pure justice. His armies are therefore clad as He is, being in full agreement with Him. They do not come, however, with their vesture dipped in blood, for He alone was crucified and slain.

19:15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword- this is figurative language, of course, and tells us that when He comes again His speech will be of a different sort than when He came the first time. Men marvelled then at “the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth”, Luke 4:24. Now it is words of judgement and war. Isaiah had spoken of this when he foretold that “with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked”, 11:4. And the apostle Paul also wrote, “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming”, 2 Thessalonians 1:8. Isaiah’s word “breath” is equivalent to Paul’s word “spirit”, and since the sword of the Spirit is the word of God, Ephesians 6:17 , then the sword out of His mouth is His word in the power of the Spirit. The sword is a symbol of justice, so the word is the word of justice.
That with it He should smite the nations- the disciples had asked in Gethsemane, “Shall we smite with the sword?”, thus indicating that at least one other than Peter had a sword with him, (as is confirmed by Luke 22:38, “Lord, behold, here are two swords”). But the use of the sword was rebuked by the Lord in that situation. This showed that His kingdom would not be brought in by force of arms, as he explained to Pilate, John 18:36,37. But it will be brought in by the administration of justice. The nations of the world will have sided with the antichrist, (even though some citizens from those nations will have refused to do so), and it is these that Christ shall judge. He shall sit upon the throne of His glory, (men gave Him a cross of shame), and before Him shall be gathered all nations, Matthew 25:51,52. He shall use the sword of justice against them in judgement, and thus smite them.
And He shall rule them with a rod of iron- looking further ahead to His rule, we are told here the nature of His control over the nations. It will be strict and inflexible. David had foretold that the Messiah would “break the nations with a rod of iron”, Psalm 2:8. Daniel saw the successive Gentile forms of rule under the figure of an imposing image, which Christ would break in pieces when He came, Daniel 2:44. So He shall break Gentile dominion, and then establish His own, which none shall break.
And He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God- this is the third metaphor for judgement. The first was a sword, the symbol of justice, the second a rod, the symbol of power, and now the winepress, the symbol of crushing defeat. John has already graphically described the way in which the vine of the earth is cut down and cast into great winepress of the wrath of God, 14:17-20. The winepress is outside of the city, so the grapes are trodden in the same place as His blood was shed. This explains why the anger of God is fierce, because of the treatment they gave to His Son long before, and the fact that largely they have not changed their opinion.

19:16 And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written- there are two names written, one that no-one knows except Himself, and this one, “King of kings and Lord of Lords”. He is called two names, “Faithful and True”, and “the Word of God”.
“King of kings and Lord of lords”- the title King of kings is on His vesture, telling us that kingship is compatible with His character. After all, He was born king, and has all the features that a king should have. But it is also written on His thigh. Now the psalmist spoke of the Messiah girding His sword upon His thigh, and in His majesty riding prosperously, Psalm 45:3,4. So perhaps “King of kings” is on His vesture, and “Lord of lords” is on His thigh, where normally the sword would be. We know, of course, that His sword is out of His mouth, showing it is no natural sword, but a spiritual one, well able to defeat the spirit-lords that are goading on the kings of the earth. When writing to warn the Corinthians not to tamper with idolatry, Paul spoke of “gods many and lords many”, so lords and gods are the forces of evil. Christ is far superior to both earthly kings and spirit forces. He rules over kings, and dominates lords.

(d) Verses 17-21 Invitation to the supper of the great God

19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

And I saw an angel standing in the sun- as a spirit-being, an angel is not affected by the heat of the sun. But if this is literal, would anyone see him? Probably the thought is that he positioned himself in the heavens so that he was directly in line with the sun, the object being to draw attention to what he was going to say. The birds of the air would be specially sensitive to changes in the sun.
And he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven- by this is presumably meant those that normally fly high in the sky. In other words the birds of prey that soar and glide far from earth, but which have such keen eyesight that they are able to see their prey from a great distance.
Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God- 500,000 Golden Eagles pass through Israel via the Jezreel Valley per season, and they are but one of the many species of scavenger birds that do so. The call is to the carnivorous birds, that they come to feast on the flesh of men as they are slain by the sword of the Coming Victor. In His Olivet Discourse, the Lord said, in connection with His coming to earth, “For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together”, Matthew 24:28. He is coming as the “Great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ”, Titus 2:13. As Saviour to those who are in great need of deliverance at this time, and as the Great God to destroy His enemies.

19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men- the kings of the nations gathered against Christ shall personally be present on the battlefield, such is their hostility to Him. The captains and mighty men, the champions like Goliath, shall be ready to fight, as will the rank and file of the army. They are only there because they pledged allegiance to the antichrist by accepting his mark.
And the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them- the Valley of Jezreel is an extensive plain, where the cavalrymen of the world have fought each other for centuries.
And the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great- such a vast collection of armies needs extensive backup resources, and the personnel to handle it. They will be enlisted from every level of society, and will have the common aim of opposing Christ at His coming.

19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army.

And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies- the final confrontation between good and evil. The antichrist is also called the Man of Sin, and the old preachers used to say that “the sin of man will result in the Man of Sin”. Here is the full development of what man is in Adam, and it is in direct conflict with the Last Adam, Christ Himself. There is no mention of the false prophet being on the battlefield, but he is taken with the others in the next verse.
Gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army- a clear manifestation of what the apostle Paul wrote about man, “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be”, Romans 8:8. They little realise that the force against them is spiritual, and that the ordinary rules of engagement do not apply to this battle. The kings of the earth had gathered together against Christ when they crucified Him, and now they are repeating it, showing they have not learnt their lesson. Psalm 2 is being fulfilled completely now, for “He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak to them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure. Yet have I set My king upon My holy hill of Zion”, Psalm 2:4-6.

19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him- in chapter 13:4 the question is asked, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? Here is the answer to the second question, for the beast is no match for the Lamb, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. The power by which the first beast operated, and the power by which the second beast did miracles, is not enough to rescue themselves from the wrath of the Lamb. There is no battle, for the result was decided at Calvary, where Christ destroyed the forces of evil. This is but one demonstration of it.
With which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image- the only reason these two succeeded in gaining the allegiance of men is that the natural mind gravitates to error. So since they used falsehood to promote their cause, they succeeded, but only for a time, because the promise about Christ was that would “send forth judgement unto victory”, Matthew 12:20. This is Matthew’s quotation of Isaiah’s words, “He shall bring forth judgement unto truth”, Isaiah 42:3. Truth shall be victorious at last, and those who promote falsehood, and those who believe it, shall alike meet their certain doom.
These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone- notice there is no process of assessment, for their sin is so obvious that there needs to be no process. The lake of fire is the same as Gehenna, the final abode of the devil and his angels, together with all who have sided with them against God. Isaiah spoke of Tophet, a place of rejection, (the word means “spitting out with contempt”), and he said, “the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it”, Isaiah 30:33. It appears from Jeremiah 19:6 that Tophet was also called the Valley of the son of Hinnom, and this is where the word Gehenna comes from, the equivalent to the particular New Testament word for hell which means the Lake of Fire.
It is appointed unto men once to die, but these go straight into the lake of fire. Either this means they are both resurrected men, who have died once already, or they are the exception that proves the rule. Elijah went to heaven without dying, and so did Enoch, so they are the two exceptions on the righteous side. The apostle wrote of this event, “And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming”, 2 Thessalonians 2:8.

19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of Him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of His mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

And the remnant were slain with the sword of Him that sat upon the horse- that is, all the others which make up the kings and people of the army, are slain. There is no battle as such, but instant death.
Which sword proceeded out of His mouth- so they die through the word He speaks. They could have had eternal life through His word, but chose not to, and sided with the enemy by listening to his deceptive lies.
And all the fowls were filled with their flesh- this is the ultimate disgrace, to be left on the battlefield for the birds of prey to feast upon. No burial, and no means of remembering them. (This strongly suggests that the destruction of Gog and Magog is at another time, for Ezekiel 39:11-17 describes the burial of the bodies after that battle). Notwithstanding the fact that their bodies will be eaten up, they shall certainly come back in resurrected bodies to stand before God and hear His stern judgement upon them.
