Who is this?
Such was the question asked by the crowds, as Jesus of Nazareth rode into the city of Jerusalem just a few days before He died. “And when He was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, who is this? Matthew 21:10. We hope you are asking the same question, too.
We can expect the Bible to give us the answer. We are not disappointed, for the words of John 20:31 read like this: “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name”.
Now JESUS is the name He was given when He was born, and emphasises that He became truly man. He became man so that, as one who had not sinned, He could die for our sins. Having been raised from the dead, He is enthroned in heaven, ready to save those who believe on Him.
He not only has the personal name of Jesus, but He is CHRIST, the one who meets with God’s full approval as shown by the fact that the Holy Spirit came upon Him.
Jesus Christ has another name, one He had before He came from heaven. That name is SON OF GOD. This means He shares the nature of God. He proved this by raising the dead to life.
You possibly may respond to this information by asking a question of your own, such as “What has this to do with me?” The answer is found in the fact that because we are sinners, we are in need of God’s salvation, and His will is that we should obtain that salvation through the Lord Jesus alone. The apostle Peter put it like this, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”, Acts 4:12.
We need to be saved from that which our sins deserve, namely the wrath of God. We cannot save ourselves by any means, for all we do is spoiled by what we are, and therefore is unacceptable to God. Christ can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
By His death on the cross He dealt with the matter of sin to God’s total satisfaction, enabling Him to righteously forgive those who, turning from their sin in true repentance, rely on Him in faith.
We hope and pray that you will give these matters the urgent and sincere attention that they deserve.
