What do you think?

Some questions are of little importance. There is one question, however, that is of great importance, for our answer to it affects our eternal destiny. It is the question posed by Lord Jesus Christ when He asked those around Him what they thought of Him. His question to them, and to us, is this, “What think ye of Christ? Whose son is He?, Matthew 22:42.

Clearly, the question is in two parts, and many will respond to the first part by saying, “He was a good man”. Others may say, “He was a fine teacher”. Still others will answer, “He was a good example.” There are even those who will acknowledge that He worked miracles.

These answers are good, but they are not good enough. Jesus Christ was not just a comparatively good man, for the Bible says “in Him is no sin”, 1 John 3:5. He was not just a fine teacher, but He could say, “I am…the truth”, John 14:6. He was not just a good example, but the perfect example, for He “did no sin”, 1 Peter 2:21,22. It is not only that He worked miracles, but that He did them of His own will, John 5:21.

Let us adjust our thinking in the light of what the Bible teaches about Him, for this is the wisest course.

The second part of the question has to do with whether we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is called the Son of God because He is equal with God. When He said, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work”, the Jews, (who were very zealous for the truth that there is only one True God), understood perfectly well that He meant He was equal with God, John 5:17,18. And so He is, for He could say, “He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father”, John 14:9.

Because He is God and man in one glorious, sinless Person, He was able to die upon the cross at Calvary to deal with our sins in such a way that Divine justice was perfectly satisfied. He is no longer dead, however, but has been raised from the dead to die no more, Romans 6:9.

When considering our response to His question, we should remember that belief about the Son of God is good, but it is only belief in Him that brings us into the blessing of the forgiveness of sins, and a right relationship with God.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”, John 3;16.
