REVELATION 17

REVELATION 17

Introduction to the chapter
We are informed in this chapter about the relationship between the false religious system which originated in Babylon after the flood, and the coming political world-leader, the beast.
The Babylonish religion is based on the concept of the mother and the child, with the child being the husband of the mother re-incarnated. The original husband was Nimrod, and the wife/mother was Semiramis. This is the basis of world-wide religion, but is mainly represented by the Papal System centred at Rome.
For centuries this religion flourished in Babylon, but when the Roman emperor Constantine professed conversion to Christianity he invited the priests of Babylon to Rome. His theory was that he could unite his empire together by means of religion. A religion, moreover, that could accommodate all shades of opinion. So it was that the rites, ceremonies and concepts of the Babylon system were merged with that which professed to be Christianity.
We have already noticed in connection with Revelation 13 that four empires are destined to arise, and will eventually merge into the empire of the beast. He will install himself in Satan’s world-capital, the rebuilt city of Babylon, and will find it useful to go along with the system of religion established there.
Eventually, he will rid himself of it and demand sole worship for himself, and claim to be God, 2 Thessalonians 2:4, whilst secretly worshipping Satan, Daniel 11:38,39. This is the price he must pay to receive world-dominion; a price the Lord Jesus flatly refused to pay, Matthew 4:8-10.
This destruction of the religious system will be effected by the ten kings that receive their power temporarily with the beast, who will burn the city with fire, and thus ensure that the system of religion she represents will never rise again. The result of this is detailed in the next chapter.

Structure of the chapter

(a) Verses 1-6 The woman who sits on the beast
(b) Verses 7-11 The origin and destiny of the beast
(c) Verses 12-18 The destruction of the woman by the beast

(a) Verse 1-6
The woman who sits on the beast

17:1
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials- chapter 16 is the account of the pouring out of God’s judgements upon the earth by seven angels. John is about to have a conversation with one of these about the judgement on the world religious system based in Babylon. Perhaps the angel is the seventh, because Babylon came into remembrance when the seventh angel poured out his bowl of wrath, 16:17,19. The angel comes to unfold to John personally what the mystery about this woman is, verse 7.

And talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore- a woman in Scripture is often a symbol of religious matters. So in 21:9 another vial-angel shows John the bride of Christ, the true church, who is without spot through Christ’s care of her, Ephesians 5:26,27. She needs to be this for she is the bride of the Lamb, the Lord Jesus, and He is the Lamb without spot and blemish, 1 Peter 1:19. This woman is the opposite of “without spot”, being, not a pure and chaste bride, but a harlot with all that the word implies. After so many thousands of years of dominating the religious scene, she is about to be judged of God, and He will use wicked men to do it, verse 17.

That sitteth upon many waters- note the verb is in the present tense, for her domination of the multitudes is constant and persistent. We are told in verse 15 that the waters are “peoples, and nations, and tongues”. Wherever men are found, however they are organised as nations, whatever language they speak, the woman dominates them. The Catholic confessional holds the masses in fear, probing as it does the inner recesses of the heart and conscience, and placing those secrets into the hands of unscrupulous priests, whose allegiance is not to God but the Pope. And then there is the blackmail of the Catholic mass, for the poor devotees of this system are taught from their infant days that unless they take the wafer of the mass they have not eternal life in their souls.

17:2
With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication- the kings of the earth have found it convenient politically to ally themselves religiously with Rome, either through a lust for power, or fear of blackmail and overthrow. What else other than fornication can a relationship with a harlot be called?

And the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication- how ironical that the system which withholds the cup of wine at the Mass from the laity, holds out the cup of licence to them. We are told the contents of the cup in verse 4, where we learn it is “a golden cup…full of abominations and filthiness”. The Papal system is idolatrous, and by its spurious “forgiveness” at the Confessional, encourages a light view of sin. When people are drunk they are insensitive to reality, and to drink of the woman’s golden cup is to be introduced to a system of thought that is diametrically opposed to the things of God as set out in the word of God

17:3
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness- how fitting that John should see the woman when he was in a wilderness, where all was barren and lifeless, for this is the effect this woman and her evil doctrines has. Isaiah prophesied about Babylon with the words, “The burden of the desert of the sea…and behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen…and he answered and said, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen'”, Isaiah 21:1,9. There is nothing for God in this city, but all is arid desert. Revelation 18:7 speaks of the woman living deliciously, (luxuriously), surrounded by all that the natural mind desires, yet here God’s view of her is given, and it is completely opposite.

And I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast- there are those who believe that the Pope is the antichrist, but this verse alone would be enough to show that not to be the case, for the woman and the beast are separate. It is certainly true that Papal Rome is anti-Christian, (despite its pretences to being the guardian of the Christian faith), but that is different to saying it is the personal antichrist.
From the beginning those who aspire to dominate men and hold power know that they must combine religion and politics to do so. We see this at Babel, which became Babylon, for men built a city horizontally, the political centre, and a tower vertically, the religious centre. Man has a spirit-component to his make-up, and mere politics does not satisfy him or hold his attention. So it shall be with Babylon at the end, the political and the religious must unite, and they do so in the form of the woman, (the religious system), and the beast, (the political system), travelling together. In this verse the woman simply sits on the beast, showing that she is associated with him in some way. In verse 7 the beast is carrying her, for it suits him to go along with her for a while. But in verse 16 the ten kings who are allied to the beast hate the woman, and burn her with fire. This marks the point where the beast unites politics and religion in himself, and sets himself up, not only as supreme world-ruler, but the one to be worshipped.
The beast on which the woman rides is scarlet coloured. This is not the same colour as the dragon of 12:2, but is the same colour as the woman, as described in verse 4. Scarlet is the signature colour of the Catholic Cardinals, and perhaps the beast is disguising himself as one of the hierarchy of the Papacy. Or at least is presenting himself as allied with her.

Full of names of blasphemy- it is a sad commentary on the woman and her claims, that she is prepared to go along with a beast with names of blasphemy. She has no sensitivity as to the claims of God and that “holy and reverend is His name”, Psalm 111:9. The claims the beast makes, and the titles he assumes, are all blasphemous, for he is opposed to God and Christ, and is seeking to usurp all that they stand for. He is preparing for the moment when he himself can set himself up as God, and be worshipped. But then the Catholic system gives Mary titles which are blasphemous, so it is no surprise that she goes along with a blaspheming beast.

Having seven heads and ten horns- this identifies him as the one spoken of in 13:1-10, and shows that it is indeed the first beast that is the antichrist. See verses 9-12 of this chapter for the meaning of the heads and horns.

17:4
And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour- these were the colours worn by the Caesars, telling us of the lust for power this woman exhibits. They are also the colours that mark the Papal system, with the Pope wearing the purple, and the cardinals wearing the scarlet.

And decked with gold and precious stones and pearls- this woman is extravagantly displaying the fruits of her success. Just as a harlot is loaded with gifts by her clients, so this wicked woman flaunts the proceeds of her fornications. It was one of the Popes who said, “How profitable a farce has this Christianity become for us”, and by saying this he laid bare the greed and arrogance of the system. How many a poor widow has been fleeced by the priest, leaving her destitute and her children hungry, by the wicked doctrine that souls can be rescued from Purgatory by the payments made by the living. The doctrine is especially wicked because there is no such place of Purgatory; it is a fictional place invented for the sake of monetary gain. So also is the sale of indulgences that in Medieval times financed the projects the Popes wished to engage in to further their own pride and desire for power.
A truly spiritual woman will not be dressed like this woman is, for the apostle Peter, (the one that Catholics want to claim as their first Pope!) wrote, “Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting of hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price”, 1 Peter 3:3,4. And the apostle Paul agreed with him, for he wrote, “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works”, 1 Timothy 2:9,10. Such is the contrast between the spiritual Christian woman, and this harlot-woman, despite all her finery.

Having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication- abominations are idols, and fornication is illicit and immoral alliance. These two things, idolatry and vice, always go hand in hand, and this woman’s system is no different.
It is reported by historians that when Cyrus the Great entered Babylon, having taken the city out of the hands of Belshazzar, he found the legendary cup of Semiramis there.
Those who were to be initiated into the mysteries of the pagan religious system were first offered a drugged drink, in order to prepare their minds for the ideas that were about to be presented to them. Without this intoxication the mind could not stand the horror of what was brought before them, for the Lord calls them “the depths of Satan”, Revelation 2:24.
As supreme ruler, Belshazzar would be acknowledged as the Pontifex Maximus. So can it be that when he “made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand”, Daniel 5:1-4, that he was drinking from the cup of Semiramis? And is it any surprise that as he, and they, (for it was very large), drank its drugged contents, he would have the impious thought of bringing in the vessels from the temple of God, so that he and his wives and concubines could drink therefrom, and praise the gods of gold and silver and brass and iron and wood as they did so? In that way the vessel of Semiramis and the vessels of God would be devoted to the same goal, the worship of Satan. No wonder the word came that his kingdom had been given to the Medes and Persians, for he had crossed a line with his impiety, verse 28. And then we read, “In that night was Belshazzar, the king of the Chaldeans slain”, verse 30. So shall it be with the future “Belshazzar”, the antichirst. He shall drink of Semiramis’s drugged cup, and the ultimate impiety shall enter his mind, even the setting up of himself as God, 2 Thessalonians 2:4. This is the ultimate apostasy, and God will judge it.

17:5
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY- there is at one and the same time brazen boldness, (the name is on her forehead), and secret mysteries, (MYSTERY). The Babylonish system is a dual one, with outward ceremonies that appeal to the senses, and hidden secrets only the initiated know. Thus there is a hidden counterpart to the ceremonies, titles and practices which appear on the surface.
Just as in the New Testament there are holy mysteries revealed to God’s people through the apostles, so there is a Satanic, unholy set of mysteries. But whereas the mysteries of paganism are only known to a few initiates, the mysteries of the New Testament are revealed to all believers.

BABYLON THE GREAT- this city is called great not because it is noble and righteous, but because it is the centre of a great deception. From the beginning Babel, and its successor Babylon, has been the source of rebellion against God, and the spread of that which is in opposition to Him. It will also, when rebuilt, be the capital city of Satan’s coming man, the beast, and the place from which the final rebellion will come.

THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS- the woman John saw has daughters, and they are harlots also, for as the apostasy deepens, many so-called Faiths will ally themselves with Rome. Organisations that call themselves Christian churches will succumb to the deception. There is a powerful movement to ensnare Protestants into this wickedness, and true believers should be alert with regard to this “falling away”, that the apostle warned about in 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4. These who go over to the side of Papal deceptions will also have a harlot character, and will be as guilty and wicked as the mother. A previous Pope to the current one held meetings with the leaders of other “faiths”.  He also erected an image of Buddha on a cathedral altar.

AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH- the system is openly idolatrous, for remember this name is on her forehead for all to see. The days when these things were covered up and denied will be over, and religion will come out in open defiance of God and His Son, and in alliance with Satan and the beast.

17:6
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints- so this is one ingredient of the cup she drinks from, even the blood of Old Testament saints. Wherever there has been persecution and murder of God’s people, this system has been lurking in the shadows behind it, for it is a comprehensive network of intrigue and influence that furthers the aims of Satan himself.

And with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus- not only in Old Testament times, but in the current age, and also in the Tribulation Period yet to come, there has been, and will be, the slaying of God’s faithful people. It is said that the Roman Catholic system is guilty of the murder of 50 million of God’s saints in this age alone. And because she is the religious force behind the beast in his rise and reign, she will be guilty of the blood of saints in that period too. The current Pope, (2019), is the first one for 600 years to be a Jesuit.  As such, he has sworn an oath to kill all who refuse the Catholic faith.

And when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration- the basic meaning of the words “wondered” and “admiration” is to look closely. As John took in the details that were presented to him, he was greatly amazed. It is not admiration in the modern sense of “look at with approval”. How could he approve of a woman who was drunken with the blood of his fellow-believers?

(b)   Verses 7-11
The origin and destiny of the beast

17:7
And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? The angel expresses surprise that John should not realise the meaning of the woman he saw.

I will tell thee the mystery of the woman- the angel will not tell in the sense that he will recount the mystery, but rather that he would explain it. There is no excuse for us today not knowing the things that shall come to pass, and being prepared for the foreshadowing of them in our own times.

And of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns- so in verse 3 the woman is simply sitting on the beast, and now we learn that the beast is carrying her; she is not static, but making progress, and it is the beast who facilitates that progress, because it suits his purpose. As we shall see, at the end he will dispense with her, but not yet.  The angel tells, or explains, the mystery of the woman in verses 14-18, and the mystery of the beast in verses 8-14.

17:8
The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

The beast that thou sawest was- from the standpoint of John in his day, the beast had existed before. Now, when God explained through Daniel the meaning of Nebuchanezzar’s dream, it was clear that the metals that made up the image he dreamt about not only represented forms of government, but also the one who headed up that government. So the word to Nebuchadnezzar was “Thou art this head of gold”, Daniel 2:38. This is also the case with the four beasts of Daniel 7, for we are told that the four beasts are four kings, verse 17, but they are also four kingdoms, verse 23.  So the beast also can be at one and the same time a person and an empire. We should bear this in mind, for presently we shall learn that the beast comes up out of the abyss and goes into perdition, and empires do neither of those things.
So thinking of the beast as a person, John is told it “was”. Now this means “was” in terms of John’s day, not the day he is being transported to in spirit. So in John’s day the beast was, in the past, from John’s standpoint at the time he had the vision.

And is not- the beast, could be said in John’s day to not be; that is, not be in evidence on the earth. Not “is not” in the sense “does not exist any more”.  This shows that the kingdom of the beast is not exactly a revival of the Roman Empire, for in John’s day it “is not”.

And shall ascend out of the bottomless pit- when we were looking at chapter 9 we saw that the demon-locusts came out of the bottomless pit, or abyss, which is not the same place as hell, or sheol, the place of the departed souls of men.
Before the flood, the sons of God, (which always means angels in the Old Testament), saw the daughters of men, and co-habited with them and produced a race of giants that were not fully men. This may have been accomplished by the spirits taking over the spirit-component of some men, and using them to further their evil purpose.  We know from the testimony of the demon-possessed man of Gadara that he said, when asked what his name was, “My name is legion, for we are many”, Mark 5:9.  So his personality and that of the spirits had merged, so that he speaks of himself and them as “we”.

The purpose of this intrusion into the race of men was to endanger the line of the Messiah. Noah is described as being “perfect in his generations”, and that particular word perfect is used of the sacrifices in the tabernacle system. A sacrifice had to be perfect to be accepted, which meant it had no physical defect. So we are learning that God saw Noah as a man that was fully human, and as such could be taken over into postFlood conditions, to begin again on a cleansed earth. So it is that God instructed Noah to make an ark “to the saving of his house”, Hebrews 11:7. His house, meaning his sons, were also not affected by the contamination of the human race, so they were especially provided for by God so that they could continue the godly line. So it was that all eight persons who stepped out of the ark onto a cleansed earth, were wholly human, and the line of the Messiah was preserved.
Sadly, however, we read “and also after that”, Genesis 6:4, so the same sin was repeated after the flood. We read in Numbers 13:33 the testimony of Caleb, one of the two faithful spies sent into Canaan. He said, “And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants”. The word he used was the same as Moses used in Genesis 6:4. We can understand why God commanded Joshua to eliminate the Canaanites, for they represented a threat to the line of the Messiah again.

If God used Seth to preserve the line after the flood, Satan used Ham to seek to spoil it again, and Nimrod was of the line of Ham. It must be said, however, that the Scripture does not specifically say that Nimrod was one of the giants produced after the flood, although the Gilgamesh Epic is very likely about Nimrod, and it was said of Gilgamesh that he was two-thirds god and one third man.  This would suggest that the evil angels took over the non-material part of man, and used the material part, their bodies, to father children who became giants.

So it was that soon after these times that God chose Abraham, separated him from the land of the Chaldees, and brought him to the land of Canaan where he could live apart from the wickedness of the nations. He was very careful not to take a wife of the Canaanites for his son, Genesis 24:3, for they might be descendants of the giants that existed after the flood, Genesis 6:4, (“and also after that”). (The people under Joshua did not drive the Canaanites out fully, as we see from Judges 1).

Thus the line of the Messiah was further preserved, for God had prepared a bride-in-waiting for Isaac, as we read in Genesis 22:20-23. That Scripture tells us that Abraham had heard of the birth, and so later on would be confident in the genuineness of the genealogy of the bride. The message about the birth of Rebekah traced her genealogy from Abraham’s brother Nahor, and significantly emphasises that it was by Milcah that Nahor had his son Bethuel, so he was wholly human. Confirmation would come to him that Rebekah was the right wife for his son if the servant who he sent to find a bride left it to the Lord to lead him to the right girl. And so it came to pass. Isaac learnt this lesson, too, for he charged Jacob to not take a wife of the Canaanites, Genesis 28:1, but go to his relatives in Padan-Aram, whose background he knew.
Returning to the beast and his ascent out of the bottomless pit. This is either figurative or actual. If figurative it means that his origin is Satanic in some way. The problem with that is that the bottomless pit is not under the control of Satan. His agents are confined there, it is true, but he is not, for he walks about as a roaring lion. If we take the ascent out of the pit to be figurative, do we not have to say that the going into perdition is figurative?

The bottomless pit is the place of evil spirits.  See, for instance, where the evil spirits that possessed the man of Gadara begged the Lord not to command them to go into the deep, or the abyss, which is the same as the bottomless pit, Luke 8:31. We might well think that this personage is one of the giants of old time, and is now rising out of his spirit-habitation, he being dominated by an evil spirit. Normally the spirits of men return to God when they die, awaiting the resurrection either to life or to damnation, Ecclesiastes 12:7; John 5:28,29.  But this man’s spirit had been taken over by evil beings, and therefore it is fitting that he should be consigned to where evil spirits are imprisoned.

And go into perdition- his end is certain, for he is called “son of perdition”, and thus bears a name that tells of his doom. This was true of Judas also, for he is called by the Lord Jesus the son of perdition, John 17:12, and the apostles said that he had gone to “his own place”, Acts 1:25.

And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder- we have this class of people mentioned again, those who are settled down upon the earth. They wonder with admiration and respect, whereas John wondered at the woman with amazement.

Whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world- see remarks on 13:8. Things settled from the foundation of the world have to do with earth, and in particular Christ’s reign over it. So these are dwellers on the earth, not in the sense that they are longing for Christ’s reign on the earth, and want to be ready for it, but because they are not interested in heaven. Those who shall reign with Christ on earth have their names in this book, but those of this verse have not; the difference being the reaction to Christ.

When they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is- they will behold him because he will have a manifestation, after a time of relative obscurity in the first half of the Tribulation Period. Everything about him will be designed to impress the natural mind, whereas everything about Christ reproved the natural mind. So he was prominent on the earth, is not prominent on the earth in John’s day, being in the bottomless pit, but in that sense, still is, waiting to emerge.

17:9
And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

And here is the mind which hath wisdom- God will see to it that there are those who understand in those times. In the prophecy of Daniel we learn of those who are wise, and who understand the significance of the events that will be taking place at the end time. Daniel wrote, “And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days”, Daniel 11:33. And again, “and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand”, 12:10.  These are the Maskilim, the wise and understanding ones, and they will understand what the world can only wonder at. They will also teach the believers of that day, for we read, “And they that understand among the people shall instruct many”, Daniel 11:33. They are the same ones referred to by the Lord Jesus when He gave His discourse on the mount of Olives, saying, “whoso readeth, let him understand”, Matthew 24:15.

The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth- the Maskilim will see clearly that the beast is the successor of the emperors of old time, who in some way damaged the interests of the nation of Israel. There are those who see in these seven mountains the empire of Rome, because Rome is built on seven hills. Rome is called historically the “seven-hilled city”. But they are just that, hills, not mountains. The highest of those hills is 76 metres, or 249 feet, and the smallest hill is 38 metres, or 124 feet. A standard electricity pylon is 160 feet high, so in no way are these hills like mountains. In any case, the Vatican is not positioned on any of the hills, but is on the other side of the river Tiber.

The truth is that, like the word beast, which refers to a man, the word mountain refers to an empire, it is not a literal and physical mountain but a moral and metaphorical one. As we saw when thinking of chapter 13, these mountains are representative of the seven empires that have impinged in some way on the nation of Israel.  The fact that the woman sits on these mountains tells us that she dominates those empires in some way. And since she represents religion, it is in that way she dominates, holding men in fear by her threatenings. We know that Nebuchadnezzar harnessed the power of religion to unite his empire, as we learn from Daniel 3.

17:10
And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

And there are seven kings- not only do the mountains represent empires, but they also represent their respective emperors, for the two were merged in ancient times. We are reminded of this in Daniel 2, because the gold of the image represented an empire, verse 39, but also an emperor, verses 38 and 44.

Five are fallen- the empires that have been influenced by the religious system emanating from the city of Babylon, and who therefore have been an influence on Israel, are the following:
First, the kingdom of Nimrod, Genesis 11:10, which originated and fostered the system of idolatry that Israel eventually succumbed to, as we know from Ezekiel 8.
Second, Assyria, which took the ten Northern tribes of Israel into captivity.
Third, Babylonia, which took the remaining two tribes of Judah and Benjamin into captivity.
Fourth, Medo-Persia, which restored the remnant in the land under Zerubabel.
Fifth, Grecia, which ruled over Palestine after the Old Testament history closed. These empires, and the rulers that dominated them, Nimrod, Sennacharib, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus and Alexander, were fallen in John’s day.

And one is- this empire, the sixth, is Rome under Caesar, who by the time the New Testament begins ruled over Palestine, and was still doing so when John had his revelation. It was as Roman emperor that Constantine welcomed the priests of Babylon to Rome.

And the other is not yet come- so in John’s day the seventh empire and emperor had not come on the scene. This is the empire of antichrist, still in the future in its first form.

And when he cometh, he must continue a short space- this may refer to the first part of the Tribulation Period, when for forty-two months the antichrist is on the scene but not manifest in his full power and awfulness. He first of all arises with three other empires at the same time, likened in Daniel’s dream to four beasts, Daniel 7.  But then John saw just one beast rise out of the sea, and he had incorporated the features of the other three beasts into himself, Revelation 13:1-10. This may take place during the first half of the Tribulation Period, and the final form of his empire is manifest during the second half.

17:11
And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth- in his final manifestation, the antichrist will be the final emperor.

And is of the seven- for if he is Nimrod back from the abyss, (remember the beast comes out of the abyss), then he is not only the first, but also the seventh in his intermediate stage, and then is the eighth. But he is of the seven in that he was one of them in his first life. If it is objected that he cannot be someone back from the dead since “it is appointed unto men once to die”, then one answer could be that Nimrod is not just man, but the product of a union between an evil angel, and one of the daughters of men. Perhaps the evil angel in question was Lucifer himself, making the Antichrist  “Lucifer manifest in flesh”, a blasphemous parody of the fact that Christ is “God was manifest in flesh”.  See 1 Timothy 3:16; Isaiah 14. In the latter passage both the King of Babylon and Lucifer are spoken of. Perhaps this explains why the beast comes up out of the abyss.

And goeth into perdition- his end is stated before he has come on the scene, so certain is his utter defeat. We read that the beast will be cast alive into the lake of fire, 19:20.

(c) Verses 12-18
The destruction of the woman by the beast

17:12
And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; But receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet- those who try to make the Roman Empire consist of ten countries are on the wrong track, because this passage clearly distinguishes the Roman empire from those that go before it, and those after it. They are definitely stated to not have any kingdom yet, even in John’s day. The vision of Daniel 2 strongly suggests that there will be some sort of similarity between the fourth kingdom of iron, and the fifth kingdom of iron and clay, but the ten kings, (that is, the ten horns), are separate from the beast, except insofar as he is a little horn at first, Daniel 7:8.

We know that at some point before this, three of these kings will be uprooted before the little horn that comes up amongst them, (probably because he sees them to be a threat to his ambitions), and he becomes the emperor, see Daniel 7:20,24,25. It seems that the deposed kings will be replaced, no doubt by those who are ready to comply with the dictates of the beast, as the next verse will say, for there are ten in this chapter.

But receive power as kings one hour with the beast- no doubt the power is received from the same source as the beast’s, namely the dragon. This means they also have vowed to worship him, in exchange for worldly pomp and splendour. That their reign is short-lived is seen in that it is but an hour. Clearly this is figurative for a brief period. The beast will be allowed to continue in his final form for forty-two months, 13:5.

17:13
These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast- normally a coalition of ten kings would break up through internal strife, but these will bond together in a common desire to further the interests of the beast. Their power is their political influence, which they will lend to the beast to further his agenda. Their strength lies in the authority Satan, the dragon, has given to them to oppose Christ. Is this transfer of power the signal for the start of the second half of the Tribulation, when sole power is given into the hand of the beast, whereas before it was shared?

17:14
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

These shall make war with the Lamb- we see immediately the intention of these kings. They are for the beast and against the Lamb. They represent antichristian hostility, which even today is making itself felt more and more. Political Correctness, or, to give it its proper name, Social Marxism, is a Satanic attempt to erase Christian things from the thinking of men. The climax will be at the end of the Tribulation, at the battle of Armageddon, where the armies that oppose Christ shall be dealt with.

And the Lamb shall overcome them- the real battle was fought, and won, at Calvary. As the Lord Jesus announced just before He went there, “Now is the judgement of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out”, John 12:31. The world that reached its crisis point when it crucified Christ, shall be finally defeated with the coming of Christ. And the prince of this world will be consigned to the abyss at that time too. The conflict between good and evil was decided at Calvary in favour of good. Hence he who is evil shall be utterly defeated, and consigned to the abyss.

For he is Lord of lords, and King of kings- no matter how much power and authority has been given to the ten kings by Satan, the Lord Jesus is King of kings, and is superior. But He is first of all Lord of lords, for, as the apostle Paul wrote, “there are gods many and lords many”, 1 Corinthians 8:5, and in the context he is referring to demons. So we have the assurance that, notwithstanding the power of Satan and his demonic hosts, Christ is greater than them all, and will demonstrate that by destroying Babylon and all it stands for.

And they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful- the angel is continuing his summary of what will happen when the Lord Jesus comes to reign. His people of this age will be with Him, having been caught up before the Tribulation Period started, see 1 Thessalonians 4:12-5:11. They must be taken to heaven beforehand, or else they cannot come out of heaven with Him afterwards. The apostle Paul makes it clear that “when Christ who is our life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory”, Colossians 3:4.
Notice the three-fold description of these believers. First of all, they are called. This indicates that they have responded to the gospel call, for Paul describes the believers at Rome as “the called of Jesus Christ”, Romans 1:6.
Second, they were chosen. It is important to realise that the Word of God never calls unsaved individuals elect, (that is, chosen), when considered in themselves. When the apostle Paul spoke of himself and fellow-believers as being chosen before the foundation of the world, Ephesians 1:4, he said that God the Father “hath chosen us in him”, that is, in Christ. They were not chosen for what they were in themselves, but they were chosen because of what and who Christ ever is, as God’s beloved Son. They came into the good of that election by God when they responded to the gospel call.
Paul puts it like this in Romans 8:28-33, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth”.
Notice that the apostle is careful to not call that person God has in view from all eternity, elect. It is only when real faith has been exercised that the good of God’s eternal purpose is realised, and then the description “God’s elect” can be used.
This is also made clear in 2 Thessalonians 2:13,14, where Paul describes the Thessalonians as “beloved of the Lord”, (that is, they were genuine believers in Him), and states that “God hath chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth: whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ”. So the process whereby God choose to salvation is said to be through two things. First, the God-ward side, sanctification of the Spirit, for the Spirit of God separates to God those who believe, in the light of God’s eternal purpose. Second, the man-ward side, belief of the truth. And how does it come about that someone believes the truth? The answer is that God calls unto salvation by the gospel.

So to return to Revelation 17:14. Those who accompany Christ when He comes to judge are described as called, because they have heeded the gospel call. They are chosen, because when they believed they were brought into the good of God’s eternal purpose. They are also called faithful. That is, they have shown in practical terms the faith they had in their hearts. Paul describes the Ephesian believers in two ways. First, they are “saints which are in Christ Jesus”; then they are “the faithful in Christ Jesus”, Ephesians 1:1. A few hours after Lydia was saved, she invited Paul and his companions into her house, saying, “If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there”, Acts 16:15. And this they did, showing that they reckoned here faithful. So we may deduce that all believers are faithful in this sense. Of course, when it is a question of service, there are degrees of faithfulness. So as believers come with Christ, they present a contrast to the dwellers on the earth, who have not responded to God’s call, and who are therefore not chosen or faithful.

17:15
And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth- the angel now clears up some matters that John may have been puzzled about. Verse 1 had described the whore as sitting on many waters, and that had not been explained. In verse 3 she was in the wilderness sitting on a beast. In verse 9 she is sitting on seven mountains. Clearly she is being described in relation to different things. As far as sitting on the beast is concerned, this shows she, at that point, dominates the beast, so that her system of religion is in control. When she is sitting on the seven mountains, that is a reminder that she represents that which started at Babel and has continued ever since, all the time that the world has been dominated by the civilisations the seven mountains represent. Now we are told she sits on the waters, and those waters are defined for us.
Are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues- so this is the company this woman influences, and it includes a vast variety of people, whether considered ethnically, numerically, nationally, or linguistically. As Jeremiah said, “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad”, Jeremiah 51:7. Wherever we go today, the Babylonish religion is present; it is all-pervading. Its wicked doctrines are promoted in every sector of society and in every division of humanity. And this will clearly continue until the Lord comes to judge it.

17:16
And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore- John may also have been puzzled as to how Babylon was going to be destroyed. He knew, of course, that ultimately her destruction was in the hand of the Lord, but who would He use? The answer is surprising. It is the confederation of ten kings which are allied to the beast, but who at the end, will give over their power completely to him. And this must be when they destroy religious Babylon, for it stands in the way of the beast exercising supreme authority, and setting himself up as the only one to be worshipped. (It is not that the Babylonish system is the worship of God; but it makes itself out to be, and the gullible masses believe it, so it has to be removed to leave only one option, that of worshipping the beast).
Daniel prophesied that the antichrist would “do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the god of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all”, Daniel 11:36,37.
And shall make her desolate and naked- we should remember that the reference all along is to a city, the centre of Satan’s religious system, with a priesthood with a corrupt and licentious lifestyle, covered over by the gorgeous robes and vestments worn at their ceremonies. Instead of multitudes enjoying luxury and pleasure there shall be desolation; instead of rich finery, nakedness.
And shall eat her flesh- the barbaric act of cannibalism is a fit description of the way she shall be completely destroyed. The word cannibal has its origins in Babylon, being made up of Cahn, meaning priest, and Bal, or Baal, the sun god. There is an irony here, for Rome claims to be able to turn a wafer into the flesh of Christ. It is fitting that her flesh should be eaten in recompense for her wicked pretensions, which have deceived so many.

And burn her with fire- the city and all its contents will be put to the flame and utterly burned up. There are two mentions of “the smoke of her burning” in chapter 18, in verse 9 and 18.
The question arises, where will antichrist have his centre after this point? Perhaps the answer is in Daniel 11:45, where we read “And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him”. If this is a reference to Tyre, which is noted for its causeway out into the sea, (“between the two seas”), then this explains why Ezekiel refers to the prince of Tyrus, Ezekiel 28:1-10, and the king of Tyrus, verses 11-19. The latter is spoken of in terms very applicable to Lucifer both before his fall and after. So the former may very well be a reference to the antichrist. This is what Ezekiel wrote about the King of Tyrus, “Thus saith the Lord God; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said ‘I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas;’ Yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God'”, Ezekiel 28:2. Antichrist will imitate this, for this is very similar wording to 2 Thessalonians 2:4, “who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called god, or that is worshipped”.  It was in the territory of Tyre and Sidon that Herod made an oration, and the people shouted, “It is the voice of a god, and not of a man”, Acts 12:22. The mount of Transfiguration is between the Mediterranean and the Sea of Galilee, and in that sense is “in the midst of the seas”.  Could it be that the antichrist will establish himself there in daring opposition to Christ, whose kingdom was foreshadowed on that mountain?

17:17
For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will- John may still have been puzzled as to why the ten kings shall act like this. The ultimate reason is now given. It is because it is God’s will, and He is ordering events to His own glory.

And to agree- in normal circumstances to get ten kings to agree, is difficult, but God will ensure it happens. Compare the sufden agreement between Pilate and herod, when they had a common cause in ridding themselves of Christ, Luke 23::12.

And give their kingdom unto the beast- in this way power is concentrated in one man, who is the tool of Satan. The world will be shown what things are like when one man controls everything. The last time one man controlled everything was when Adam sinned. Now the consequences of that sin are to become evident.

Until the words of God shall be fulfilled- God is going to fulfil all that He foretold through the prophets, and nothing shall prevent Him from doing this.

17:18
And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

And the woman which thou sawest is that great city- this verse forms the link between this chapter and the next. Chapter 18 emphasises that Babylon is a real city that is the centre of world-commerce and can be burned with fire. This chapter has only spoken of a woman with the name Babylon on her forehead. This verse shows that they, to all intents and purposes, are the same.
Which reigneth over the kings of the earth- no matter what time we think of, as long as there have been kings, the Babylon-principle has dominated. That principle is of combining religion and politics together in opposition to God. There were no kings before Babel was built.

REVELATION 18

NOTES ON REVELATION 18

Introduction to the chapter
In chapter 17, the emphasis was on the relationship of a religious system, (symbolised by a woman), to the beast, or antichrist. In the last verse we learned that that woman was also to be thought of as a city, for that is where the centre of her influence lies. In 17:16 the ten kings associated with the beast burn the woman with fire, and it is this that is the subject of chapter 18.

It would be helpful to notice the things Zechariah saw in his visions, for they have a bearing on the chapter before us. Zechariah prophesied in Jerusalem soon after the return from captivity. He saw a series of visions all in one night as follows:

First vision, 1:7-17

Zechariah learns that it is because God is jealous for Jerusalem, and had “returned to it with mercies”, (meaning His judgement upon the city was over), that He had allowed the people to return to rebuild the city and the temple.

Second vision, 1:18-21

Zechariah saw four horns, the symbol of Gentile powers that had scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. Then four carpenters cast out the horns of the Gentiles. In other words, the hostile Gentile powers that took both Israel and Judah into captivity are cast out, and prevented from harming Israel now that they are back in the land.

Third vision, 2:1-13

A man with a measuring line measures Jerusalem, implying that it would be successfully rebuilt.

Fourth vision, 3:1-10

Joshua the high priest is cleansed and clothed, ready to function in the rebuilt temple, despite Satan’s opposition.

Fifth vision, 4:1-14

Zerubbabel would be enabled to finish the building of the temple, encouraged by God’s two anointed ones, the prophets Zechariah and Haggai.

Sixth vision, 5:1-4

Zechariah sees a flying roll or scroll which advertises God’s curse upon the thefts and deceit that pertained worldwide.

Seventh vision, 5:5-11

Instead of the rebuilding of Jerusalem, it is the building of a house in the land of Shinar that is in view.

Eighth vision, 6:1-8

The prophet sees four horses and chariots, which symbolise God’s angelic agents, that inform Him of the situation in different parts of earth. The quarter from which most trouble for Israel has come is quiet, signifying that the risk of attack is low.

We need to concentrate on the fifth and sixth visions.

Zechariah 5:1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.

By flying roll is meant a scroll spread out like a banner, advertising God’s curses on conditions in the earth, especially to do with deceit and stealing. The fact that Zechariah turned indicates a change of mood in the visions. All the others tell of God’s dealings with Jerusalem; the two in this chapter speak of Satan’s city, and the basis upon which it shall prosper.

5:2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

That the scroll can be measured indicates it is spread across the sky, its contents fully visible. The size is the same as the floor space in the Holy Place of the tabernacle in the wilderness. The holiness of God has been outraged by the behaviour of men, and this is God’s protest, and also His warning of the consequences.

5:3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.

Written on one side of the scroll was God’s curse on those in the earth who were guilty of stealing. On the other side were curses on those who swore.

5:4 I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

God assures the prophet that God will bring forth His curse, and it will enter into the house of the one who has stolen, and also the house of the one who has sworn falsely by His name. The curse will remain in the house and not go away, and shall consume the building entirely. The house may not simply be the dwelling-place of the sinner, but the house he has built up in a commercial sense by the use of stealing and swearing falsely. In verse 11 a house is built in Shinar in the same sense.

To swear falsely was to transgress against the law of God in such a way as demanded a trespass offering to be brought. There were seven kinds of transgression against God and one’s neighbour listed in Leviticus 6:1-8, as follows:

1. To lie about something delivered him to keep. This is carelessness with regard to another’s property, and the denial of the fault.

2. To transgress in the matter of fellowship. This refers to agreements made, but broken. It is literally “putting the hand”, and is equivalent to our modern-day shaking hands on an agreement.

3. To take away anything by violence. This could include using the law to deprive another of his property rights.

4. To deceive one’s neighbour, perhaps over a business deal, making it appear other than it really is, and thus gaining an advantage.

5. To find something another has lost, and to lie about it, no doubt denying that it has been found, and thus keeping it illegally.

6. To swear falsely, making an agreement one has no intention of keeping.

All of these trespasses are prevalent in the modern business world, and will become increasingly so after the restraint offered by the Holy Spirit has gone during the Tribulation period. The mystery of lawlessness already works, but then will be unrestrained.

5:5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.

5:6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.

An ephah was a measure of about seven and a half gallons, and was used both for liquids and solids. It would represent therefore, the whole range of commerce, which depends on the measurement and weight of materials, whether it be wheat or gold.

The resemblance is the likeness. The word is literally “the eye”. So just as one can see one’s reflection in another’s eye, so what follows will be true of all in the commercial world of the future.

5:7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

A woman is often used as a metaphor for a religious system in Scripture. Seeing she is described as wickedness in the next verse, and the word is the feminine of lawlessness, the description given to the antichrist in 2 Thessalonians 2:xxx, (“that Wicked”), we can easily see that she represents the amalgamation of religious wickedness and commercial wickedness in the form of lawlessness, the transgression of the laws God has put in place for the regulation of life on earth. The woman sits in the midst of the ephah to signify she controls from the centre.

A talent is a hundredweight, but it may also be translated “round piece”, so we can see that it is a round and heavy piece of lead that fits closely around the top of the ephah-measure.

5:8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

The prophet learns that the woman represents wickedness, and she is confined in the ephah while it is transported to its destination. The heavy lead weight keeps her in.

5:9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

If the woman represents a religious system, then these two women must do also. We know from Revelation 17:5 that the harlot has daughters. The wind is in their wings, for they are storks, birds that rely on wind currents to carry them along. The word for wind and spirit is in many cases the same, so we have lawlessness being carried along by “the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience”, Ephesians 2:2. The women carry the basket between the earth and heaven; in other words, they soar high in the sky, just as storks are able to do.

5:10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?

5:11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

The prophet learns that the ephah is to be carried to the land of Shinar, where the men who had rebelled against God congregated at the beginning, and where the tower of Babel had been built, the centre for idolatry after the flood, Genesis 11:1-9. Satan will make Babylon his base at the end times, and antichrist will be King of Babylon, and the woman will be his queen, controlling the religion of the world. In the same way Semiramis, the wife of Nimrod, had instituted the idolatrous system of the mother and the child, with the child being the husband of the mother, but revived after having been killed.

It is interesting to notice that soon after he became United States President, Donald Trump addressed a large gathering of Arab leaders, and amongst other things said,”…the birthplace of civilisation is waiting to begin a new renaissance…great cities will be built on the ruins of shattered towns…”

Comparisons and contrasts between Old Testament prophecies concerning Babylon, and the references in the Book of Revelation:

The city is literal in both cases

Jeremiah 50:1 “The word that the Lord spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet.”

Revelation 16:19 “and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath”. (Notice that the cities in the first part of the quotation are literal, so Babylon must be a literal city also).

Babylon is the centre for idolatry

Jeremiah 50:2 “Say, ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces'”.

Revelation 17:5 “And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.” Abominations are idols.

Babylon has spread idolatry throughout the earth

Jeremiah 51:7 “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad”.

Revelation 17:2 “With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication”. Fornication is a metaphor for idolatry.

Both are described as golden

Isaiah 14:4 “That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, ‘How hath the oppressor ceased! The golden city ceased!'”

Revelation 18:16 “Alas, alas, that great city…decked with gold, and precious stones and pearls”.

Both are associated with a golden cup

Jeremiah 51:7 “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken”.

Revelation 17:4 “And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:” The Cup of Semiramis, Nimrod’s wife, was a well-known feature of Babylonish ceremonies. It would be filled with wine which contained substances that induced those who drank it to enter a fresh level of consciousness, by which they were enabled to understand things hidden from normal mortals. It is said that when Cyrus the Persian entered Babylon after overthrowing Belshazzar, he discovered the Cup, which was very large. We know from Daniel 5 that the king was drinking wine with his guests that night. Ancient coins from Babylon depict a woman holding a cup in a distinctive way.

The fall of the city is sudden in both passages

Jeremiah 51:8 “Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.”

Revelation 18:8 “Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.”

The announcement of the fall in the same

Isaiah 21:9 “And he answered and said, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground'”.

Revelation 14:8 “And there followed another angel saying, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication'”.

The destruction of the city is in the Day of the Lord

Isaiah 13:1,6,10 “The burden of Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see…Howl ye, for the Day of the Lord is at hand…the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine…”

Jeremiah 51:6 “Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance; He will render unto her a recompense.”

Revelation 6:17 “for the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?”

God’s people are called to go out of the city

Jeremiah 51:45 “My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the Lord.”

Revelation 18:4 “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”

Both are said to sit on many waters

Jeremiah 51:13 “O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.”

Revelation 17:1 “And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, ‘Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:'”

Both are burned with fire

Jeremiah 51:30 “The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken”.

Revelation 17:16 “And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.”

Revelation 18:8 “Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.”

The destruction is likened to being thrown into the water

Jeremiah 51:63,64 “And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates: And thou shalt say, ‘Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary’. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.”

Revelation 18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

The destruction is complete and final

Jeremiah 50:39 “Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.”

Revelation 18:21 “And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, ‘Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.'”

Her fall is the cause of much rejoicing

Jeremiah 51:48 “Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the Lord.”

Revelation 18:20 “Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.”

Revelation 19:1-4 “And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are His judgements: for He hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.”

With this background information in mind, we turn now to Revelation 18, where the things foretold of old time are shown in their fulfilment.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 18, VERSES 1 TO 8:

18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

18:5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

18:6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

(a) Verses 1-3 The finality of the fall of Babylon

18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven- some think the expression “after these things” serves to distinguish the Babylon of chapter 17 from the Babylon of this chapter. The phrase occurs ten times in the Book of Revelation, on seven occasions John tells us that he saw something after the things previously mentioned, and this is one of those seven occasions. The other three references occur in 1:19, 4:1, and 9:12, where the expression “after these things” does signify an important break in the sequence of the events in the book. Here, however, there is a continuation of the previous chapter, but the change of emphasis warrants the expression “after these things I saw”.
Having great power- we must remember that Babylon is the centre of Satan’s power, and that the nations of the world are protected by evil angels. We learn from Daniel 10:12-11:1 that the angel Gabriel was not able to withstand the angel-prince of Persia until Michael, the prince that stands for the nation of Israel, came to help him. So mighty evil angels protect the interests of the empire of the antichrist. We know from chapter 12 that Satan and his hosts will by now have been expelled from heaven, but they still operate on earth, as is seen in 12:13-17. This is why a strong angel comes to announce the downfall of Babylon, for the voice from heaven in verse 8 will say, “Strong is the Lord God who judgeth her”. The angel has the resources of the strong Lord God at his disposal.
And the earth was lightened with his glory- we should not forget that under the fifth seal the kingdom of the beast became full of darkness. How dramatic will be the effect of a mighty angel coming down from heaven and shedding his glory over the scene. The Lord Jesus spoke of the glory of the angels, Luke 9:26.

18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen- the strength of the angel is displayed by his mighty cry with a strong voice. In fact, the word for “strong” angel, and the word for “loud” voice is the same. His voice is an expression of his power. Isaiah speaks of horsemen coming to bring news of the overthrow of Babylon, and they say, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen”, Isaiah 21:9. In Revelation 18 the message comes from an angel. The city is called Babylon the great because it will have been the capital city of the antichrist, the centre of a great rebellion against God. The repetition of “is fallen” indicates the certainty and finality of the fall, for it shall never rise again.
We should notice that nearly identical words are used in Isaiah as are used here. But in Isaiah the reference is to a literal city, so that shows the same is true here, unless we are given any indication otherwise, which we are not. It is true that the woman is described as a city in 17:18, but that is the point. It is the woman that is like the city, not the other way round. The city is so identified with the woman’s influence that the two are, in a sense, interchangeable, but it is still a literal city that can be burned with fire.
And is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird- not only is the finality of the fall indicated by the language, but also by the description now given. Jeremiah prophesied that when Babylon was destroyed, “Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever”, Jeremiah 50:39. Our passage goes further, however, and speaks of Babylon becoming not only the cage of every unclean and hateful bird, (birds like the vulture which is both unclean and loathsome to look upon), but also the habitation of evil spirits. These evil beings are called devils because they are allied to the Devil himself. They are called foul because of their vile influence, both spiritually and morally.

18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication- the word fornication occurs seven times in connection with Babylon in these chapters, thus emphasising the particular sin, both moral and spiritual, that marked her, no doubt under the influence of the foul spirits of the previous verse. Jeremiah said that “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed”, Jeremiah 51:7,8. And again Jeremiah said, “For thus said the Lord God of Israel unto me; ‘Take the wine cup of this fury at My hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them’. Then took I the cup at the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me”. So not only do the kings of the nations drink of the woman’s cup, 17:4, so that they are initiated into her mysteries and obey her dictates, but they also find that the Lord turns that cup into a cup of wrath, and they are made to drink to their destruction. In 16:19 we read “and great Babylon came into remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath”.
And the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her- when men are drunk with wine they often act in an immoral way. Here the immorality is of a spiritual kind, as the kings of the earth ally themselves with her. Notice the city is spoken of in female terms, because it is the representation of the woman of chapter 17. In the same way the bride of Christ is a city in 21:9,10.
And the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies- so not only is Babylon the religious centre of world religion, and the political centre for antichrist, but it is also the commercial centre, for these three things are inter-related.

(b) Verses 4, 5 The appeal to God’s people before the fall of Babylon

18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

And I heard another voice from heaven- the first voice is of a strong angel, whose voice was strong and his cry was mighty, for he is announcing judgement. Here the angel is making an appeal on behalf of God to His people.
Saying, Come out of her, My people- when the city of Jerusalem is overrun by the forces of antichrist at the start of the Great Tribulation, (for it is to be trodden down of the Gentiles for forty-two months, Revelation 11:2), the Jews will be “led away captive into all nations”, Luke 21:24. It is to those who are taken to Babylon that the appeal comes to remove themselves from the city. The Lord called Israel through Zechariah to separate themselves from Babylon, “Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon”, Zechariah 2:7. At present, the nation of Israel cannot be called the people of God, Hosea 1:9, but individuals from among the nation can be so described. Jeremiah also spoke of this need to flee. He wrote, “Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance; He will render unto her a recompense”, Jeremiah 51:6.
There is a practical lesson here for today, for believers are called to separate in every way from religious evil. They refuse to do so at their spiritual peril, as the next phrase would indicate.
That ye be not partakers of her sins- those who choose not to separate from the world’s religious system are reckoned to agree with its doctrines, which are Christ-dishonouring and Christ-denying.
As the apostle Paul wrote, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty”, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.
And that ye receive not of her plagues- it was under the seventh angel, (and remember the seven angels had “the seven plagues”, 15:6), that “great Babylon came into remembrance before God”, 16:19. The plagues are listed for us in verse 8, being death, mourning, famine, and the burning of the city. If God’s people wish to avoid these, they must flee from the city.

18:5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

For her sins have reached unto heaven- at the beginning of this city’s history, the men of Shinar, (called Sumerians by archaeologists), built a tower, “whose top may reach unto heaven”, Genesis 11:4. They were not so stupid as to think they could reach the stars physically. What they were doing was stretching out to the host of heaven to worship them. The ziggurats still to be found in Iraq, (and for that matter the pyramids of Egypt and South America), were built in the interests of worshipping the host of heaven. So it is that when men built their tower, God came down to see it, Genesis 11:7. Here, however, He does not need to come down, for it is not the tower that reaches to heaven now, but their sins.
And God hath remembered her iniquities- all down through the centuries God has been remembering the sins instigated by the Babylonian religious system. Just as He remembers the spiritual exercises of His people, and records them in the book of remembrance that is “written before Him”, Malachi 3:16, so He records the sins of men. At the time of His choosing He remembers those sins, in the sense that the record is consulted. We read in 16:19 that “great Babylon came in remembrance before God”, for the time to judge the sins recorded in His book had come. He does not need the book in case He forgets, but so as to show His judgement is strictly in accordance with the facts. David had an official known as a recorder, which comes from the word to remember, 2 Samuel 8:16. He was the remembrancer, making a record to be consulted later.

(c) Verses 6-8 The justice of the fall of Babylon

18:6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

Reward her even as she rewarded you- this shows how far back God’s memory of Babylon’s dealings goes. Jeremiah, when speaking of Babylon writes, “The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go”, Jeremiah 51:33. So what happened when Israel, (the ten-tribed part of the nation), went into captivity by the Assyrians, and when Judah, (the two-tribed part), were taken captive to Babylon, has not been forgotten by God, even though one took place in BC 723, and the other in BC 606.
And double unto her double according to her works- not only has Babylon been responsible for taking Israel captive, but it has done evil in the world sphere also, hence she deserves double punishment. The works that Babylon is guilty of are manifold and evil. How much intrigue, plotting, overthrowing, has taken place in the political sphere through this system is yet to be told in its fulness, but God knows every detail. And then in the religious sphere, how much evil doctrine and wicked machination there has been, fomented in our day by the Jesuits, whose main task from the Pope is to undermine the truth of God and set up devilish error in its place.
The reason why God is so against Babylon is because it was responsible for the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Said Jeremiah, “Woe unto them! For their day is come, the time of their visitation. The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance of His temple”, Jeremiah 50:27,28.
In the cup which she hath filled fill to her double- the woman’s cup of 17:4 was full of abominations and filthiness. Now it is to be filled with the “wine of the fierceness of His wrath”, 16:19. And because she sinned in a double way, she must drink the cup twice over. There is the temporary misery of losing all, and then the eternal misery in the Lake of Fire.

18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously- The list in verses 12 and 13 of items of merchandise traded in Babylon, give insight into how they were living deliciously, meaning in luxury.
So much torment and sorrow give her- as the city lived thus, it was priding itself on its success and trading skills, not knowing that the degree of the self-glorying would be the degree of the sorrowing. Instead of glory there would be torment; instead of luxury there would be misery.
For she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow- Isaiah describes Babylon before her fall with the words, “Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, ‘I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:’ but these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood”, Isaiah 47:8,9. Notice the phrase “given to pleasures”, which is the same description in our chapter. Then she claims “I am, and none else beside me”, as if her position is unassailable. This is a blasphemous parody of the words of the Lord Himself, “I am the Lord, and there is none else”, Isaiah 45:5, and “For I am God, and there is none else”, 46:9. As we shall see from the next verse, she must be destroyed to make way for the one who will claim to be god.

18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

Therefore shall her plagues come in one day- the reason why Babylon shall be destroyed suddenly is that her sins were so great that she will not be allowed time to repent. In the verse from Isaiah just quoted, the judgment would come “in a moment in one day”.
Death, and mourning, and famine- no doubt the agencies for these judgements are the ten kings allied to the beast who shall turn on her at the end of the Great Tribulation, as the previous chapter describes, “And the ten horns that thou sawest on the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil His will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled”, 17:16,17. This will need to happen so that all power, religious and political, is centred in the beast, so there is no rival system to his, and he can claim to be god.
Death will come to those who have not heeded the warning to escape out of this city. Those who survive the first few hours will be overcome with mourning for those taken from them. And then there will be famine. But we usually think of famine as coming after a drawn-out period. This famine is different, for it is as if the effects of a long-drawn out famine are felt in one day.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 18, VERSES 9 TO 19:

18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,

18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

18:11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

18:12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,

18:13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.

18:14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

18:15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,

18:16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

18:17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

18:18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!

18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

(d) Verses 9-19 The mourning for the fall of Babylon

The mourning of the kings of the earth- “Alas, alas that great city Babylon”.

18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,

And the kings of the earth- we read in 17:18 that the woman “reigneth over the kings of the earth”, holding them under her sway. No doubt blackmailing them with the prospect of eternal punishment if they did not own allegiance to her and do her bidding. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain is required to dress in black when she meets the Pope as an act of penance for the dissolution of the monasteries by her ancestor, Henry VIII. This is just a small indication of the power the Popes try to wield over the monarchs of earth. And who knows what is whispered in their ear in secret?
Who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her- the prophets used sexual sin as a metaphor for idolatry, and that is what this Babylon system is. It is based on the hellish teachings of the ancient priests, which resulted in men being under the sway of spirit-forces. The idolatry was but a front for demon-worship. In exchange for their attentions in this way, these kings were given all they wanted in terms of a life of luxury and ease as they co-habited with her.
Shall bewail her, and lament for her- they lament for her, but only because of their loss of power and influence. Heaven will rejoice over her fall in the next chapter. These kings are out of touch with heaven.
When they shall see the smoke of her burning- the physical burning of the city of Babylon is a sign of the destruction of the system itself, for we read that it is the ten kings who shall burn her, (that is, the woman) with fire, 17:16.

18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgement come.

Standing afar off for the fear of her torment- such will be the intensity of the burning that the kings shall not be able to endure the heat, and will stand afar off.
Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! Notice the change from “her” torment to “great city”. The city and the religious system are bound up together, just as at Babel when men rebelled against God and idolatry began. For then there was a city, and also a tower at whose top the worship of the host of heaven would have been carried out.
For in one hour is thy judgement come- God had foretold that the judgement would be like this, “Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: And mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: And desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know”, Isaiah 47:11.

The mourning of the merchants- “Alas, alas, that great city”.

18:11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her- Babylon wil be the great commercial centre of the end times, as well as the seat of the antichrist and the centre of godless religion. The businessmen of the world will converge there to make money. Now their headquarters is burnt with fire, with the consequent disruption of their profit-making enterprises.
For no man buyeth their merchandise any more- their profit-motive was uppermost in their minds. They made a convenience of the religion. That there is no alternative centre of business reminds us that buying and selling will be rigorously controlled by the beast. Only those who have his mark will be able to do it, 13:16,17. They cannot transfer their business elsewhere and be able to trade again.

The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones- the finance facilities.
And of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet- the finery.
And all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble- the furniture and fittings.
And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense- the fragrances.
And wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep- the foodstuffs.
And horses, and chariots- the facilities for sport.
And slaves- these goods will need an army of unskilled workers to handle them, and there will be no concern about the welfare of the workforce, so that they will be virtually slaves, as in John’s day.
And bodies and souls of men- this is the most sinister item of all, for the corporations will demand that their workers give their lives for the firm, no matter what strain it puts upon them physically, nor what the cost to them as people. The King of Sodom came to Abraham, and said “Give me the persons (souls), and take the goods to thyself”, Genesis 14:21. And this is the demand that businesses put on their workforce already, which will clearly intensify in a day to come.

Apart from the last three, these are all the luxury goods that may be found in high class shopping malls even today, and in full measure in the ultimate shopping mall of the city of Babylon.

18:14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.

And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee- the apostle Paul wrote of “fruit that may abound to your account”, Philippians 4:17. By this he meant profit credited to the believers for giving to further the work of the Lord through him. Instead of losing by giving, they gained and made a spiritual profit. The men of Babylon shall indeed make a profit, but they will not gain by it, for it will all be destroyed. This is true of all things that men seek to accumulate, for they will not take them into eternity. “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out”, 1 Timothy 6:7.
And all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee- those luxury items they had purchased for themselves from previous profits, they were gone too. Past gains and prospective ones were alike gone.
And thou shalt find them no more at all- they would never see either their profits or their possessions. They would be deprived of them for ever in their totality.

18:15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,

The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her- they were made rich by trading in the materials listed, but they were made rich really by association with the woman. It is only because they have surrendered their wills to her that they are able to prosper.
Shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing- this is why they weep, for they will never recover their position, for the one who has been their facilitator of riches is destroyed.

18:16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!

And saying, Alas, alas that great city- like Lot’s wife, they look back longingly at the ruin of the city and regret its destruction. They have no thought that it is the judgement of God that is taking place. Babylon has always been noted for its greatness, as Nebuchadnezzar said, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom, by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?” Daniel 4:30.
That was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! We read “And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls”, 17:4. So the city is so identified with the woman that it is said to wear the same clothes and jewellery as she does. Note that these merchants only think of greatness in terms of riches and extravagance. Being deficient in spiritual appreciation, the spiritual riches the Christian has are alien to them.

18:17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,

For in one hour so great riches is come to nought- they thought they were secure well into the future, like the rich fool who said to his soul, “Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat drink and be merry”, Luke 12:19. Fortunes can easily be lost in an hour.

The mourning of the shipmasters, “Alas, alas, that great city”

And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off- attention now turns to the shipping magnates who profited from the transport of Babylon’s luxury goods to and fro. There are the heads of the shipping lines, “every shipmaster”; those who run the ships, “all the company in ships”; those who steer the ships, “the sailors”; and the on-shore exporters and their office personnel, “as many as trade by sea”. All these lament the destruction by burning of the great city of Babylon, for it was the means of their livelihood and riches. All this seems to imply that the Euphrates will be deepened so that ships may sail up to the city, unless there is a port constructed at the mouth of the river.

18:18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!

And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! Babylon presented unparalleled opportunities to ply their trade, for none could buy or sell without the mark of the beast, and trade will be concentrated in the beasts capital city, the coming capital city of the world.

18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

And they cast dust on their heads- this is the characteristic eastern way of expressing deep sorrow. They have become obsessed with riches, so that the loss of them is like the loss of a loved one. As the apostle Paul wrote, “For the love of money is the root of all evil”, 1 Timothy 6:10.
And cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! They join the kings and the merchants in their lament at the fall of Babylon. It was the love of extravagance that promoted the accumulation of riches. When men came from other parts of the world and saw the luxury of the city and its inhabitants, they coveted the same.
For in one hour is she made desolate- again, the suddenness of the destruction is emphasised. In the previous chapter the angel told John that the ten kings would “make her desolate”, referring to the woman, 17:16. So again there is the mention of the woman and the city as if they are synonymous, which, in a very real sense, they are. The bride of Christ shall never be desolate, for she will be at the side of her Beloved for all eternity. She was not attracted to Him by His earthly riches, for He became poor, but His precious blood has purchased her.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 18, VERSES 20 TO 24:

18:20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

(e) Verse 20 The rejoicing of heaven over the fall of Babylon

18:20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

Rejoice over her, thou heaven- in contrast to the weeping of those who profited by Babylon, there is a call for great rejoicing on the part of both believers and angels in heaven. The two view-points expressed in these verses are totally opposed. It is the responsibility of believers now to note this, and not be infected by the Babylon-spirit which is in the world already.
And ye holy apostles and prophets- there is always in the background the thought that the city of Babylon will be, and has been, the centre of the religious opposition to God represented by idolatry. As Jeremiah said, “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine, therefore the nations are mad”, Jeremiah 51:7. It is an undoubted fact that the form of religion represented at the moment by the Roman Catholic system spread throughout the earth from the city of Babel, following the confusion of tongues. Everywhere in the world the same basic ideas are held, centred on the idea of the mother and the child, with the child being the reincarnated husband of the mother. So it is that when the truth of God is presented in such an environment, there is opposition, for the Babylonish religion is ultimately driven by the forces of evil, so that Satan is worshipped. The holy apostles are those of this age who promoted the truth of Christianity, either personally, or through their writings. The prophets did a similar thing in the Old Testament era, setting forth the mind of God before Christ came.
For God hath avenged you on her- in the Old Testament, it was the responsibility of the nearest kinsman to come to the rescue of his relative who was in some trouble. He was also charged with the task of avenging any wrong that had been done to him. Christ is presented in the Book of Revelation not only as the Kinsman Redeemer of His people, but also their Kinsman Avenger. The saints down through the ages have been badly wronged by the Babylonish system, and now the time of recompense has come. It is said that fifty million of God’s saints in this age alone have been killed for their faith by Roman Catholic agents.

(f) Verses 21-23 The violence of the fall of Babylon

18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea- the following quotation is from the prophecy of Jeremiah: “The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was a quiet prince. So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon. And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words; Then shalt thou say, O Lord, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever. And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates: And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah. Jeremiah 51:59-64.
So in Jeremiah’s time, it was the book containing the prophecy which had a stone bound to it, and was then thrown into the Euphrates river. Here Jeremiah’s prophecy has been fulfilled, and the angel depicts this by his action; but it is not the book, but a stone as large as a millstone, (representing the great city of Babylon), that is flung into the sea.
Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all- this is not to say that the city will be thrown into the sea. Rather, that its destruction will be so thorough as when a large stone is drowned in the ocean, and no trace of iit is found any more.

18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee- all categories of people will be affected by Babylon’s destruction. Here it is the musicians who entertained the inhabitants at their concerts. It was one of the features of the world of Cain’s day that there was music, for we read of one of Lamech’s sons, Jubal, that “he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ”, Genesis 4:21. This is probably the origin of the word “jubilation”. Satan has many ways to distract men from thinking about God and eternity, and music is one of them. The word “amusement” consists of the word “muse”, to think deeply, and the negative “a”. Amusements are designed to stop us thinking.
And no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee- then there are the trades-people and skilled craftsmen of every sort, who enable life in the city to proceed without inconvenience.
And the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee- such a population of wealthy people will demand food of the finest and most varied sorts, but one day the mill-stones will be charred and burnt, with none to turn them.

18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee- the beautiful chandeliers that graced their dwellings and ballrooms have no one to cause them to shine. And in the houses, all will be in darkness.
And the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee- either the man and his bride cannot be heard saying their vows, or their new life together has been disrupted. Either way, the simple joys of a normal society will cease for ever in the city. The Lord Jesus prophesied “For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be”, Matthew 24:39. Since there will also be a disdain for marriage as in Sodom before it was destroyed, perhaps the marriages here are for social reasons, to make an impression upon others, and to make an excuse for lavish entertainments and parties. They will use marriage as an pretext to show off to their friends, seeking to outdo one another in the extravagance of the spending.
For thy merchants were the great men of the earth- in that day those who have been successful in business and made themselves fortunes will be looked up to as great men. As the psalmist said, “And men will praise thee when thou doest well to thyself”, Psalm 49:18.
For by thy sorceries were all nations deceived- the word used for sorcery gives us the English word “pharaceuticals”, or drugs. The golden cup in the woman’s hand would have wine mixed with hallucinatory drugs, enabling those who drank from it to be put into such a state as would enable them to see beyond the natural, to view the infernal. Those who were initiated into the mysteries of the heathen mysteries would affect others, so that the whole world would be deceived. This process began at Babel, and was accelerated by the dispersion that took place as a result of the confounding of the language.

(g)   Verse 24   The greatness of the guilt of Babylon.

18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints- all who have been martyred for their faith, whether in the Old Testament times or the New, have been the victims of the religious ideology represented by Babylon. Satan has only had one religion for men, based on rejection of the word of God. It has taken many forms, but at heart is the denial of the Father and the Son, for the apostle John defined an antichrist as one “that denieth the Father and the Son”, 1 John 2:22.
And of all that were slain upon the earth- it is not too much to say this. When we think of the religious element in most if not all wars down the centuries, and the rejection of God that leads to murder, then we can easily see that the angel is right in what he says to John here.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION CHAPTER 14, VERSES 1 TO 11:

14:1  And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with Him an hundred forty and four thousand, having His Father’s name written in their foreheads.

14:2  And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

14:3  And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

14:4  These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

14:5  And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

14:6  And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

14:7  Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

14:8  And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

14:9  And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

14:10  The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

14:11  And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

(a)     Verses 1-5    Faithful evangelists seen on Mount Sion

14:1  And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with Him an hundred forty and four thousand, having His Father’s name written in their foreheads.

And I looked, and, lo- so John looks, and he wants us to look too, so he writes “lo”, exhorting us to behold (get a hold or grasp of), what he is seeing.
A Lamb stood on the mount Sion- Hebrews 12:22 reads, “But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem”.  So there is a heavenly Sion, and it is out of this place that Christ shall come to the deliverance of His earthly people, for the apostle Paul writes, “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, ‘There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob'”, Romans 11:26.  But this is an allusion to the words of Isaiah, when he wrote, “And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob saith the Lord”, Isaiah 59:20.  So there is to be an earthly equivalent to the heavenly Sion, for the Redeemer shall come out from the heavenly and come to the earthly, when He comes to reign. Zion in Jerusalem being the centre of the rule of the King.  At that time the Redeemer Himself shall turn the nation from the transgression of crucifying Him by appearing with the marks of Calvary upon Him, which will cause them to mourn and repent, Revelation 1:7; Zechariah 12:10.
John sees the Lamb standing, as He was in chapter 5 to emphasise His resurrection.  He is not the Lamb prostrate upon the “altar” of Calvary any more, but gloriously risen.  As the sacrificial Lamb, He suffered outside of the city of Jerusalem, unwanted, but on His return He shall reign inside the city, welcomed.
And with Him an hundred forty and four thousand- this is the same company as was sent forth in chapter 7 to evangelise throughout the world, preaching the gospel of the kingdom. As many as had been sent forth are now safely in heaven, their work done.  This shows how unwise it is to suggest that the number is a rounded figure, for if the number had actually been, say, one hundred and forty three thousand, nine hundred and ninety, but had been rounded up, how would we know that every single one was safe in heaven?  The Lamb had been with them, (“Lo, I am with you alway”), and now they are with Him.  He overcame, and is sat down on His Father’s throne, Revelation 3:21, and so had they overcome, and stand before that throne.  They had confessed Christ before men, and now He is confessing them before His Father, as He promised in Matthew 10:32.
Having His Father’s name written in their foreheads- this tells us what the seal is which was put upon them in 7:2.  They had received God’s seal, and refused the mark of the beast.  The Lord Jesus was sealed by His Father, John 6:27, (the chapter where He spoke of Himself as the Bread of God), for just as bakers stamped their name on the loaves they sold, to show that they would stand by their product, so God the Father had every confidence in His Son, and in this company too.
The name is written on the forehead, showing that the interests of God were foremost to their minds.  The Pharisees wore phylacteries, (a small box containing a portion of the law), strapped to their foreheads, but unhappily this had become just a religious act, and too often their minds were not occupied with God, but self.
Note that it is the name of the Father of the Lamb, which seems to indicate that they did not have the same close privilege as is the portion of God’s people today, who may properly call God their own Father, John 20:17.

14:2  And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:

And I heard a voice from heaven- the massed choir consisting of these one hundred and forty four thousand is singing as one man, for John hears but one voice.  It is said of the musicians and choir in Solomon’s temple that, “the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord”, 2 Chronicles 5:13.  Here however, the musicians and the choir are the same.
As the voice of many waters- like a mighty waterfall, its constant noise drowning out all other voices.  But it is not a mere noise, but is a voice, the intelligent expression of fervent praise to God.
And as the voice of a great thunder- whereas the waters are constant, the thunder is intermittent, but when it comes it makes all other sounds irrelevant.  The praise of these men at times rises to a thundering crescendo, showing the enthusiasm with which they praise God.
And I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps- the same singers as were described as waters and thunder are now said to play upon their harps at the same time.  This was a feature of most of the musical instruments used in the temple-worship, for the one playing could also sing at the same time, and this is the case here.  We read of the voice of the harpers, for they have not put down their harps to sing, but are harping with their harps at the same time as singing.  It is said of some in Solomon’s temple that they prophesied with the harp, 1 Chronicles 25:3, so their song had spiritual content, for it was the unfolding of the mind of God. The fact that these men were harping at the same time as singing shows they knew the words of their song so well that they could play the harp at the same time.
In our day, when musical instruments are not necessary, we should ensure that the hymns we sing have spiritual content.  Unscriptural hymns should not be sung, and those giving out a hymn should not ask fellow-believers to sing something contrary to Scripture.

14:3  And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

And they sung as it were a new song- that is, a song new to them.  Released from the afflictions of earth, their spirits are free.  As was the case with the psalmist, God had put a new song in their mouths, Psalm 40:3.
Before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders- this shows they are in heaven, and not upon the earthly Sion.  They sing before the throne because their praise is directed to God, and also because it is He who they represented upon the earth in their evangelism.  They sing before the four beasts and the elders, because these cannot learn the song they sing, and must be content to listen.  They, being angelic creatures, do not know anything about the experiences these men have had.
And no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand- their experience had been unique, for they had been raised up of God to do a work at a very critical time in the history of the world, and had endured unimaginable hardships as they went forth with the gospel.  It is  appropriate that these sing the song.  We often sing words which go well beyond our experiences, but that it not the case with these men.
Which were redeemed from the earth- just as the nation of Israel was delivered politically and nationally from the afflictions of Egypt, so these had been delivered physically from their trials.

14:4  These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins- they had devoted their lives to God for the seven years of their ministry, with the resolve to allow no distractions to interrupt it.  Theirs was an urgent task, and normal domestic responsibilities would have hindered the doing of it.  The Lord Jesus spoke of those who made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake, Matthew 19:12, and these are like this.
These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth- they had followed His example of tireless activity on earth, and now their reward is to follow Him in heaven, see 7:17.  They were totally unlike the man spoken of by the Lord Jesus with the words, “And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me”, Matthew10:38.  To take up a cross meant the willingness to endure extreme affliction, and the company on Mount Sion had been like this.
These were redeemed from among men- not only were they delivered from being on earth, as verse 1 says, but they were redeemed from being among men, for the world was hostile to them and they were in a place of danger.  God in His mercy redeemed them from that danger, and now they were safe. They were also redeemed as to the body, for that was their last link with Adam, but now that link was broken and they knew full redemption in resurrection.
Being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb- the ordinance in Israel was that the first sheaf of the harvest should be special to God, and offered to Him in His courts.  These represent the first sheaf of the great harvest of Old Testament saints who shall rise from the dead when Christ comes to earth, so that they may enter into the kingdom of the Messiah.  They were the firstfruits to God, as being very special, for He claimed the first sheaf, and they were the firstfruits unto the Lamb because if there had been no Passover, there would have been no Feast of the Wave-sheaf that was connected with it.  There is no resurrection if there is no Calvary.  Moreover, He is it that shall raise the dead, John 5:28,29, so He has claimed these to Himself in that way also.

14:5  And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

And in their mouth was found no guile- they gave an honest testimony as to the kingdom.  They could say with the apostle Paul, “Neither at any time did we use deceit”.  After all, as followers of the Lamb, they were like Him of whom it is said, “neither was guile found in His mouth”, 1 Peter 2:22.
For they are without fault before the throne of God- the righteousness of God’s throne has no charge to bring against them.  Again they were, in a limited sense, like Him of whom Peter says. “Who did no sin”, 1 Peter 2:22.  The implication is that the proof that what they preached was without guile is seen in that they are before the throne of God.

(b)    Verses 6-7    Final opportunity for men to believe

14:6  And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven- the word “another” is a reference to the angel of 8:13, who warned men of the woes that would come when the last three trumpet-angels sounded.
Having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people- the testimony to the kingdom is over, for the preachers have been taken up to the heavenly Sion, and now the testimony is on the basic level of the recognition of God as Creator.  God, even at this late stage, is still not willing that any should perish.  It seems there are two categories of men here, those who dwell upon the earth, and are not at all interested in heaven, and those who, out of every class of men, are not so set in their rejection of the claims of heaven, and may still respond to their Creator.

14:7  Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgement is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Saying with a loud voice- the message is urgent, and therefore must be sounded out far and wide, hence the loud voice, to arrest attention, and show the earnestness of the messenger.
Fear God, and give glory to Him- the apostle Paul’s charge against heathendom was that they “changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like unto corruptible man”, Romans 1:23.  This will be repeated in the end times, for God and His glory will be forgotten by men, and they will worship the image of a man.
For the hour of his judgement is come- the hour suggests a concentrated period of severe judgement, and men are warned yet again before it arrives.
And worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters- men are called to fear Him because His judgement is come, and worship Him because He created all things.  The four things singled out here are reminders of the flood of Noah’s day, when judgement engulfed the earth, and although God has promised never to flood the earth again, He will judge it by the fires of His wrath.  It was when the windows of heaven were opened that the waters came to flood the earth.  And it was when the fountains of the great deep were broken up, releasing waters stored under pressure in the caverns beneath the sea-bed, that the sea rose to engulf everything.

(c)    Verse 8    Fall of Babylon announced

14:8  And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

And there followed another angel- the first angel preached the everlasting gospel about God as Creator, a truth for every period of time.  The second and third angels announce judgement, showing that even at this late stage God puts blessing before woe, if men will have it.
Saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city- this is virtually a quotation from Isaiah 21:9, which reads, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen”, so the angel must surely be referring to the same city Isaiah prophesied about, which was the literal city of Babylon.  This cautions us against making the city a symbol, even though there is undoubtedly symbolism attached to it.  Satan does not want us to take the book of Revelation literally, for that lessens its impact, and gives license to the imagination, which is fatal in Bible interpretation.
The angel adds “that great city”, as if to emphasise that he is referring to a great city in existence at the time he is speaking, bearing in mind that John has been transported in vision to the end times.  The angel is anticipating the fall that is detailed in chapters 17 and 18, and rejoiced over in chapter 19.
Because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication- Jeremiah wrote of the city of Babylon, “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that hath made the whole earth drunken”, Jeremiah 51:7.  When men were made initiates into the mysteries of the religion of Babylon, a golden cup was held out to them which contained a mixture of liquids calculated to make them give their minds over completely to the devilish things to which they were being introduced.  Fornication is spoken of in physical terms elsewhere, but here it speaks of spiritual unfaithfulness to God in the form of alliance with idols, and the demons who lurk behind them.  It is the wine of the wrath of her fornication because drinking it in honour of idols will be recompensed with wrath from God, in the form of wine from the cup of His indignation, verse 10.
All nations have been duped by the mother and child system of idolatry which began in Babylon in the times of Nimrod and his wife Semiramis.  Nimrod was killed, and Semiramis saw that the only way to maintain her fame and prestige was to suggest that he had returned as her son.  And men believed this, led on by the deceiver of the whole world, Satan himself.  So the son of the mother is also the father of the child of the mother.  It is noticeable that Matthew, when he is recording the events surrounding the birth of Christ, very carefully tells us that when the wise men arrived at the house pointed out by the star, and saw the young child and Mary His mother, they fell down and worshipped Him, not the mother, and presented gifts unto Him, not to Mary, Matthew 2:11.

(d)    Verses 9-11      Future of beast-worshippers

14:9  And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice- another urgent message to men, showing that even in the midst of wrath God remembers mercy.
If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand- since the woman who rides the beast is destroyed by the associates of the beast, 17:16, it is evident that the final form of idolatry will be the worship of a man, who himself is energised by Satan himself.
We know from Matthew 24:15 that the image of the beast, there called the abomination of desolation, (because an idol is an abomination to the Lord, and its presence makes the Holy Place desolate), will stand in the temple in Jerusalem.  But we also know through the apostle Paul that it will come to pass that the Man of Sin, another title of the beast, will himself sit in the temple.  Paul describes him as one “who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God”, 2 Thessalonians 2:4.  So some will be allowed into the temple to worship the man himself, and some will worship the image of the beast there, or perhaps, if each unbeliever has his own image, (see notes on 13:14,15), that he will worship in his own home.

14:10  The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God- not only does the woman hold out a cup to her devotees, but God also has wine for those who rebel against Him.  But it is not wine to give pleasure, but wine that brings pain, a just recompense for those who have offended God with their sins. The chapter opens with the song of joy of the redeemed, but now the misery and torment of the lost in the Lake of Fire is anticipated.
Which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation- from the flagon of His wrath there is poured out a due measure of indignation for each individual beast-worshipper.  This is done without mixture, nothing being added to alleviate the suffering that results.  The time when God remembers mercy in the midst of wrath is gone.
And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels- it seems that those in the torments of the Lake of Fire will be able to see God’s holy angels worshipping Him, whereas they had worshipped Satan’s man.
And in the presence of the Lamb- to see the angels worshipping the Lamb for ever is part of the punishment, for it will fill these with remorse when they realised they sided with the wrong person, and despised the Lamb of God and His redeeming blood.  The Lord Jesus spoke of the rich man in hell, that he lifted up his eyes, and saw Lazarus as he was comforted in Abraham’s bosom, Luke 16:23.  He had not wanted to see him when he begged at his gate, but turned the other way.

14:11  And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever- that is, the smoke of the fire that gives them torment ascends for ever, with no relief for all eternity.  No wonder the prophets warned us to flee from the wrath to come!
And they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name- worshipping the beast gave them freedom from persecution, but they have no rest now, but are constantly in a state of terrible agitation.  The wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, said the prophet, Isaiah 57:20, and now these have eternal restlessness, for they refused the rest Christ offered, Matthew 11:28.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION CHAPTER 14, VERSES 12 TO 20:

14:12  Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

14:13  And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

14:14  And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle.

14:15  And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in Thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for Thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

14:16  And He that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.

14:17  And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

14:18  And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

14:19  And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.

14:20  And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

(e)    Verses 12,13    Felicity of the martyrs

14:12  Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Here is the patience of the saints- the truths of verse 10 and 11, and the certainty that they will be vindicated for their stand for God, gives the persecuted believers in that day, (not just the one hundred and forty four thousand, but all the saints, meaning believers), great comfort, and enables them to endure, for they know they are on God’s side.  Herein lies the cause of their patient endurance.
Here are they that keep the commandments of God- they had rejected the worship of the image because God in His commandments had forbidden idol-worship.  Israel had broken that commandment at the foot of Sinai, and afterwards, but these had kept it unbroken.
And the faith of Jesus- they not only obeyed negatively by not worshipping idols, but they obeyed positively by living like Jesus did, a life of faith in a world of unbelief, despite the consequences. He had refused to worship the Devil, and so did they refuse.

14:13  And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write- clearly a very important statement is about to be made, and John is to be ready with his pen.  It was the Lord Jesus who had commanded him to write at the beginning of the book, 1:11, so it appears He is speaking again, especially as the Spirit specifically says He agrees with the statement.
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth- this is not to say that those who die in the Lord before this are not blessed, but it is the assurance at this critical time that all is well with the souls of those who are martyred under the beast.
Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them- despite being under much stress, they had still done works of righteousness.  Noah had done works of righteousness in faith, as he battled with the conditions prior to the flood, Hebrews 11:7, and these had done the same.  Their works followed them in the sense that the record of their deeds was to be found in heaven for reward and recompense, and they will rest after their labours for God upon earth.  Those who worship the beast have no rest for ever, verse 11.  Their works will follow them, too, but to be requited with the due degree of wrath. We have the bringing together of the Spirit and Jesus again in testimony at the end of the book, 22:16,17.

(f)    Verses 14-16    Fully ripe harvest

14:14  And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle.

14:14  And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man- the psalmist wrote that God “maketh the clouds His chariot”, Psalm 104:3, so we are now shown the Son of man waiting in His war-chariot, ready to execute judgement.  All judgement has been committed to Christ because He is the Son of Man, who has made Himself available, not just in person when He was upon the earth, but also in the preaching of God’s grace, and yet has been largely rejected.
Having on His head a golden crown- this is a “stephanos”, the crown that is earned.  Adam was crowned with glory and honour at the beginning of his career, Psalm 8:5; Hebrews 2:7, but he succumbed to temptation and lost his crown.  The last Adam has moved through Adam’s world, overcome the Tempter, and retains His crown, Hebrews 2:9.  He is about to assert His rights as the King of kings, and is fittingly seen with a crown.
And in His hand a sharp sickle- His reaping of the nations in judgement will be efficient and unsparing.  Nothing will be left behind in the form of gleanings; no corners will be left unreaped, all shall be cut off by the Judge.
Note that the Son of man has a sharp sickle to reap the harvest, but it is an angel in verse 19 who has a sharp sickle to cut the bunches of grapes off the vine.  So it is that the one who made such claims, and showed such power, the Antichrist, shall be dealt with by a single angel, just as Satan will be chained by a single angel in 20:1,2.  Thus will be fulfilled the words of Isaiah when he spoke of the kings of the earth saying to the king of Babylon, “Art thou also become weak as we?  Art thou become like unto us?”, Isaiah 14:10.

And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him that sat on the cloud- it seems strange that an angel should initiate this reaping on the part of the Son of Man.  We learn, however, from the prophet Daniel that the task of observing the conduct of those who rule on earth is allotted to the watchers and the holy ones, Daniel 4:13.  Nebuchadnezzar became very arrogant, but his pride was dealt with, and he was humbled when the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones was carried out, verse 17.  So it may well be that the angel that comes out of the temple is one of these holy ones and watchers, and he is reporting to the Son of Man on the state of the world under the Antichrist.
Thrust in Thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for Thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.  And He that sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped- there is no mention here of the mixture of wheat and tares that the Lord spoke of in His parable in Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43.  In that case the reapers were the angels.  Here the Son of man reaps.  It is the harvest of those who comprise the armies that are converging on Jerusalem from all parts of the earth.  The fact that they are on the side of the Antichrist is shown by the fact that they have not refused to fight.  This is simply their cutting down in judgement in the battle of Armageddon, for nothing is said about what happens after the corn has been cut down.
Joel prophesied of this harvest in his third chapter, speaking of it in terms of the last great battle, when the men of war are assembled for the final conflict.  The reason assigned being that they had treated His earthly people badly, verses 1-8, and now was the time of recompense, verses 9-16.  This would explain why there is no mention of the distinction between wheat (true believers), and tares, (professed believers) in either Joel 3 or Revelation 14.
The word from Joel is, (and note that the harvest of the corn is spoken of alongside the treading of the grapes),  “Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:  Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.  Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord.  Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.  Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great.  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.  The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.  The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.  So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more”, Joel 3:9-17. The Valley of Decision is the Valley of Jehoshaphat, being the place where Christ’s decision is made known about those who have come to fight against Him.
Nebuchadnezzar repented after he had been disciplined by the holy watchers for his pride, but there will be no such change of heart on the part of the Antichrist and his followers.

(g)    Verses 17-20    Fully ripe grapes

14:17  And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle- again the judgement issues forth from the temple, the centre of God’s administration, and from which He asserts His holy and righteous authority.  This angel is the one who reaps, and the other angel of the next verse is the one who burns the vine in the fire, for the Antichrist and the False Prophet shall both be consigned straight into the Lake of Fire, 19:20.

And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire- in His discourse about Himself as the true vine, and His people as the branches, the Lord said, “If any man abide not in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned”, John 15:6.  No doubt the Lord had Judas in mind when He spoke these words.  He is called the son of perdition, John 17:12, and so is the Antichrist, 2 Thessalonians 2:3.
So the allies of the antichrist who come to make war against Christ, are fit only for the winepress of God’s wrath, and the fires of the Lake of Fire. This is why there are two angels who come out of the temple, one to harvest the grapes of the vine, so as to cast them into the winepress, the other with the power over fire to burn the branches.
And cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.  And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God- when Isaiah was prophesying about the king of Babylon, he spoke of him as an abominable branch, Isaiah 14:19.  Antichrist is in view here; he is the False Vine in opposition to the True Vine, (Christ Himself), and John is shown the destruction not only of the fruits of his reign of terror, (the clusters of grapes), but also his own destruction, (the vine itself), when Christ comes to judge and make war.  The fruit of the True Vine is all that is done to glorify the Father, John 15:8, whereas the fruit of the False Vine glorifies Satan, and as such must be judged.
Notice that whereas the Son of man reaps the harvest, an angel gathers the clusters of the vine and puts them in the winepress, and another angel burns the vine.  It is the Son of man who treads the winepress, however, Isaiah 63:1-6.

14:20  And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

And the winepress was trodden without the city- that is, the city of Jerusalem.  How solemn to think that the place where Christ was crucified in order that men might know the grace of God in salvation, is the same place where they shall know the wrath of God in judgement.  Their rejection of Him, as expressed by the fact that they had taken Him outside their city, has culminated in the Antichrist-system of open rebellion against God and His Christ.
Joel speaks of the winepress as being in the Valley of Jehoshaphat, which is reputed to be the same as the Cedron Valley, a ravine which runs between the city of Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives.  The Lord Jesus is coming to the Mount of Olives when He returns, as stated by Zechariah in the following words, “Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.  For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.  Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when He fought in the day of battle.  And His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.  And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with Thee.  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:  But it shall be one day which shall be known to the Lord, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light”, Zechariah 14:1-7.  Just as the sun stood still in Joshua’s day, so that he could finish his defeat of the enemy, Joshua 10:12-14, so in the day of judgement, the daylight will extend into the night.
And blood came out of the winepress- Moses spoke of “the pure blood of the grape”, Deuteronomy 32:14, but here is the impure blood of men who are in league with Satan’s man.  Moses went on to write: “For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.  For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:  Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.  Is not this laid up in store with Me, and sealed up among My treasures?  To Me belongeth vengeance, and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste”, Deuteronomy 32:31-35.  This is part of the Song of Moses, and was written in view of the latter days of Israel’s history, when they go over to idolatry in the form of the worship of the image of the beast, Deuteronomy 31:29.
Even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs- it could well be that the supply of oil to fuel the machinery of war will have dried up, and men will resort again to ancient methods of warfare.  Ezekiel says that the weapons of war will be burnt, 39:9,10, suggesting that there will be a return to primitive weapons.  So much is dependent on computers today, that it will only take the disruption of their systems, (which already takes place), to force sophisticated means of warfare to be abandoned.
It is clear from Revelation 16:16 that the armies of the world will gather at Armageddon.  This is a word made up of “har”, or hill, and Megiddo, an ancient city on a hill on the edge of the Valley of Esdraelon or Jezreel, where many battles have been fought in past centuries.  This was a strategic spot, guarding a pass through the mountains through which a road comes from the sea-coast.  But the battle will not be fought there, but at Jerusalem, at the foot of the Mount of Olives.  We may easily imagine that the armies of the world will converge on Jerusalem when they learn that Christ has descended to that spot, and will funnel into the narrow Valley of Cedron, there to be slaughtered.
So it may well be that blood will literally reach to the bridles of the horses in that valley, (reading “even unto the horse bridles” in parenthesis), and the length of the column of the armies of the world will be 1600 furlongs, or 200 miles.
It is said that the blood from the sacrifices in the Temple was channelled from the altar so as to run down into the Brook Cedron.  So when the Lord Jesus crossed that brook to go to the Mount of Olives on the night before He died, the waters ran red with blood.  When He comes in the other direction, from the Mount of Olives at His descent from heaven, the river will run with the blood of the men who have rejected Him and His sacrifice.

ISAIAH 45:15-17

These verses come in a remarkable passage in Isaiah where God predicts the name of the king who will bring the nation of Israel out of their captivity in Babylon. 170 years before the event, God foretold through the prophet that Cyrus, King of Persia, would allow His people to return to their land. This, however, is only a foretaste of what will happen in the future, when the nation of Israel is installed in the Land of Promise, with Jesus Christ as their Messiah and King, and this is what our passage has to do with. Isaiah is doing several things. First, he is maintaining the Godhood of God in the face of the false gods in the nations around Israel. Second, he is showing the folly of worshipping those false gods. Third, he is warning Judah about the sins the other part of the nation, the ten tribes of Israel, were guilty of. Fourth, he is prophesying about the near future, when Cyrus the Persian would come to Babylon and defeat it, thus allowing the people of Israel to return to their land after the Captivity. Fifth, he is looking far into the future, when a more wonderful deliverance would be effected, and Christ the Messiah would deliver His people from a greater danger, and bring in His reign on the earth. So in Isaiah 44:23 the prophet projects himself into the future, when the reign of Christ has begun on earth, and speaks of it as if it has happened. This is often called “the prophetic past”. So certain is the outcome, that Isaiah can with confidence speak of it as if it has already happened. Then he proceeds to tell how that glorious outcome will be achieved. In verses 24-28, Isaiah makes a remarkable set of predictions. Remember he is speaking before Israel were taken into captivity and Jerusalem was destroyed. Yet he predicts that a ruler will arise by the name of Cyrus, who will be so used of God to deliver His people that he can be given the title “anointed”, 45:1. He is so like Christ in this one respect, (and only this respect of course), that this name can be given to him in a lesser sense. So before Jerusalem was destroyed Isaiah prophesied it would be rebuilt, and by whom. Isaiah also predicts that God would “frustrate the tokens of the liars”, and “make diviners mad”, 44:25. This happened when Belshazzar’s astrologers were unable to read the writing on the wall, Daniel 5:7,8.  God would turn their wise men backward, and make their knowledge foolish. Much literature from Babylon has been discovered which shows that the astrologers of those times invariably assured the king that he would be victorious. They probably felt that it was too dangerous to say otherwise! God, says Isaiah, would “confirm the word of His servant”, (i.e. Daniel), and “perform the counsel of his messengers”, (i.e. the prophets who had foretold the downfall of Babylon). Then come these significant words, “That saith to Jerusalem, ‘Thou shalt be inhabited’; and to the cities of Judah, ‘ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof’; 44:26,28. Cyrus will perform all God’s pleasure, and will do this by saying to Jerusalem, “Thou shalt be built”, and to the temple, “Thy foundation shall be laid”. The Medo-Persian army diverted the river Euphrates (which flowed through the city), whilst Belshazzar feasted with his lords, or great ones, including, no doubt, the chiefs of the army. Having done this, they were able to march into the city along the river bed, open the gates from the inside, (“I will open to him the two-leaved gates of brass”, 45:1) and the city was taken. God further promises to loose the loins of kings, 45:1, which is exactly what happened, for we read that when Belshazzar saw the writing on the wall, “the joints of his loins were loosed”, Daniel 5:6. So it was that Cyrus and the Medo-Persian empire succeeded the Babylonian empire. The rule over Babylonia itself was given by Cyrus to Darius the Mede, who died two years later. Daniel 6:28 shows that subsequently Cyrus took sole charge of the empire. It was the policy of Cyrus to allow the nations he had conquered to continue with their particular religion. Accordingly, he allowed the Israelites to return to Jerusalem and build their city and their temple. Thus the word of God came to pass. This brings us to Isaiah 45:7. “I form the light” would firstly refer to God as Creator and Controller of the universe, (not the false gods of the heathen), reminding us of Genesis 1:3, “Let there be light”. It would also remind us that He alone is the One able to bring in all that light symbolises, such as hope, righteousness, and a new day. Only God can dispel the gloom of their captivity. He creates darkness also, for He will plunge the kings who resist His will into the same despondency and darkness as they have made His people suffer. Jeremiah 50:29 foretells that God would recompense Babylon for what she had done to Israel. So it is that when Israel returned to Jerusalem, (which name means “foundation of peace), after the exile, they had a measure of peace and quietness, all of God’s creating. But Isaiah looks on to a better day for Israel, when the Messiah shall come, and “the people that walked in darkness”, shall see “a great light”, Isaiah 9:2. A verse quoted by Matthew when the Lord Jesus moved from living in Nazareth to being in Capernaum, near Galilee Matthew 4:13-16. The “way of the sea” Isaiah mentions is the highway from Babylonia that swept down along the Mediterranean coast, then came inland past the Sea of Galilee and went on to Damascus. Matthew probably sat alongside this highway collecting taxes for the Romans, but one day the King of Kings came by, and Matthew immediately left working for the Romans, and followed Christ. Malachi speaks of the “Sun of Righteousness arising with healing in His wings”, Malachi 4:2, and David spoke of the “morning without clouds”, 2 Samuel 23:4. All to come to pass when the Lord Jesus comes to reign. For Israel’s enemies, however, whether in Cyrus’ day or in the future, God will create evil. The word used here is found 640 times in the Old Testament. On 275 occasions the thought is of calamity of some sort. So whereas God brings in light, in the form of salvation and deliverance for Israel, He will bring in calamitous conditions for those who oppose Him. “Verily Thou art a God that hidest Thyself, O God of Israel the Saviour” expresses wonderment at the remarkable way God will intervene in salvation for His earthly people Israel in a future day. As the apostle Paul wrote, “How unsearchable are His judgements, and His ways past finding out”, Romans 11:33. The glory of God that will be expressed in Jesus Christ His Son when He reigns, will be so splendid, that it will be as if God hid Himself in Old Testament times. He did not in fact do so, but by comparison, it will be as if He did. He is called the God of Israel the Saviour, because through Jesus Christ He will intervene to rescue His people from their enemies. But more than this, He will save them from their sins when they repent and believe in the one they crucified centuries before. When they see the Lord Jesus coming in power and great glory, they shall look on Him whom they pierced, and weep in repentance, and accept Him as their long-promised Messiah. See Revelation 1:7; Zechariah 12:10-14; John 19:31-37. The reference to idol-worship is very solemn, for before Christ’s kingdom is set up, a time of great tribulation will come upon the earth, and a counterfeit messiah will arise, and demand that men worship him and his image. This will be a great test for the remnant of those who believe in Israel, and the prophet is putting on record beforehand, for their encouragement, that God will see to it that all who worship idols will be judged.

BOOK OF REVELATION Part 7

SIXTH REVELATION: CHRIST’S WRATH WITHOUT MERCY

Chapter 15:5 to 19:10.

Christ reveals Himself as vindicator of the Old Testament prophets.

God had spoken through the prophets in Old Testament times, and they had announced the following things:

1. The judgement of men in the Day of the Lord because of their rebellion. This is the subject of Revelation 16.

2. The judgement and destruction of Babylon. This is described in chapters 17 and 18.

3. The coming of Christ in glory to destroy His enemies and set up His kingdom. This is the subject of chapter 19.

So the events of these chapters vindicate the prophets, despite the passage of many centuries since they spoke the words.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 15, VERSES 6 TO 8

15:5 And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:

15:6 And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles.

15:7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

15:8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from His power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

15:5 And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:

ANGELS PREPARE TO INFLICT THE SEVEN LAST PLAGUES

We come now to the beginning of the sixth and final part-revelation of Christ before He comes in person. It tells of unrelieved and unparalleled judgement of the most severe kind, constituting the “great and notable day of the Lord”, one day the prophets marked out as being especially terrible. Yet even in such a time, the promise is, “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved”, Joel 2:32. A promise reaffirmed in the New Testament in Acts 2:21 and Romans 10:13.

In chapter 11:19, the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in His temple the ark of His testament. This is immediately prior to the details chapter 12 about Israel’s preservation in the wilderness, and the rule of the beast in chapter 12. There is the assurance that God’s rule is still operative, and He will be faithful to the nation with which He has entered into covenant.

At the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, Solomon “brought up the ark of the Lord, and the tabernacles of the congregation…and the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord unto his place…” 1 Kings 8:4,6. At this point in Israel’s history, the tabernacle, (the moveable wilderness structure), recedes, and the ark remains. At the captivity, the ark recedes too, for all the vessels of House of God were taken to Babylon, 2 Chronicles 36:18. With the government of the earth now in the hands of Gentiles, and with God as the God of heaven, Daniel 2:44, it is appropriate that the symbol of the Divine Presence and rule should not be mentioned amongst the vessels that were carried away.

Here in verse 5 there is no mention of the ark, for the emphasis is on testimony. The tables of stone were called the testimony, and instead of the assertion of God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Israel, (appropriate in chapter 11 as it leads into chapter 12), there is the assertion of the abiding character of the commandments He gave in testimony to men. They flout His laws at their peril, as they are about to find out. The heavenly temple is called the tabernacle of the testimony, thus linking the idea of the wilderness tabernacle with the kingdom temple. But the point is that in each building there was the same ark- God’s testimony as unchanged. And so it is in the days of the seven angels.

15:6 And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles.

The seven angels are the ones already mentioned in verse 1. Both there, and here, they are said to have the seven plagues, yet they are not given the bowls containing these plagues until the next verse. Perhaps the thought is that they have the plagues as far as the purpose of God is concerned, but are not actually authorised to execute the judgement until handed the bowls by the living creature.

As befits those who act for God, they have pure and white linen robes, for God’s judgements are always righteous, and free from any impure motive. They are princely and dignified in their demeanour, too, for their breasts are girded with a golden girdle. They are not girded around the waist as if for menial tasks, but act confidently and unhurriedly, (for if running was in view, they would gird up their loins), carrying out the will of God in judgement.

15:7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

As the bowls of wrath are especially to execute severe judgements on the earth and heavens, it is fitting that a representative of these hands the angels the bowls, thus indicating that those close to the throne know this to be the will of God- it is not a maverick action on the part of those out of line with His will.

The fact that God liveth for ever and ever is specially mentioned here.

15:8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

The glory and power of God are now combining to execute fearful judgements upon the earth. None could enter His presence to plead with Him to restrain His judgements, but they are poured out without pity upon the godless world of men, as they range themselves against Him is wilful and calculated rebellion. The climax of six thousand years of earth’s history has arrived, and the God’s patience has finally been exhausted.

The word fulfilled reminds us that the time of full judgement has arrived. The seven last plagues fill up the wrath of God, as verse 1 says, and not until they have been poured out will His anger be satisfied. This consists first of all of seven angels bearing the seven last plagues in their bowls or vials of wrath. These are summoned by the seventh trumpet blower. Again the seven are divided, four, affecting the earth, and three, affecting the spirit world. Again, there is a parenthesis between numbers six and seven, albeit a short one.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 16, VERSES 1 TO 12

16:1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

16:2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

16:3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

16:4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

16:5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because Thou hast judged thus.

16:6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and Thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

16:7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Thy judgements.

16:8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give Him glory.

16:10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,

16:11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

The first plague is on the earth, and men who have worshipped the beast and have his mark in recognition of his claims, are afflicted with a grievous sore.

The second is more general, for it results in the sea becoming like the blood of a dead man, and every sea-creature, being unable to breathe, dies. In the first trumpet judgement all the grass had been burnt up. Perhaps men had turned to harvesting the sea as a result. Now this is denied them, and they begin to starve.

The third plague turns the waters of rivers and fountains to blood, so extreme thirst will overcome men, especially bearing in mind the next plague. The waters become blood as just recompense for shedding the blood of God’s saints.

The fourth plague afflicts men with sunstroke, with all its accompanying pain. They blasphemed God’s name still further, however, and refused to repent.

The fifth plague is more spiritual in character, being directed at the antichrist’s seat of government, showing what God’s thoughts about him setting up Babylon as a rival centre to Jerusalem. They now gnaw their tongues with pain because of the accumulated torments inflicted upon them.

The sixth plague has to do with the drying up of the Euphrates so that the kings of the east may be gathered together for Armageddon.

DEMON FORCES PREPARE THE WORLD TO REBEL AGAINST CHRIST, AND THE SEVENTH PLAGUE IS INFLICTED

Between the sixth and seventh plague there is a most solemn parenthesis. Three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the three evil personages opposing God at this time. They work miracles, and gather men to the great battle of Armageddon, for their destruction. The other two parenthetical passages concerned God’s messengers, whether the 144,000 or the two witnesses, showing that in the midst of wrath He shows mercy. These messengers, however, come from the devil to deceive. Is this the strong delusion the apostle Paul wrote of in 2 Thessalonians 2:11?

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 16, VERSES 14 TO 21

16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

16:20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

The seventh plague was poured out on the air, the means of man’s life. How terrible to be judged by God with suffocation! Belshazzar was accused of not glorifying the God in whose hand his breath was, so his breath was withdrawn that night, Daniel 5:23,30. These are God’s final acts of wrath, and He announces the fact in the words “It is done”. There follows a great earthquake, Jerusalem was divided into three parts, the cities of the nations fell, and Babylon came into remembrance before God.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 17, VERSES 1 TO 18

17:1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:

17:2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

17:4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:

17:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth.

17:6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

17:7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.

17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

17:10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

17:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.

17:13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.

17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

17:15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

17:16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

17:17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil His will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

17:18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

THE JUDGEMENT OF RELIGIOUS BABYLON

It is clear from a comparison between Jeremiah’s prophecy about the downfall of Babylon in chapters 50 and 51, with Revelation 17 and 18, that a literal city is in view. Jeremiah is speaking about the city of his day that was responsible for the destruction of Jerusalem, but this prefigures a more solemn day when God takes account of the fact that all of earth’s ills since the flood have stemmed from that city. The words of God are “Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken”, Jeremiah 51:7. Revelation 17:2 is an obvious reference to this, speaking of “being drunk with the wine of her fornication”. Fornication in this setting meaning unfaithfulness to God expressed in idolatry. That idolatry is founded on the concept of the Mother and the Child. The child being, in Babylonian mythology, the Husband of the Mother. So the child become the expression of the father, for he is the father reincarnated. This is a blasphemous imitation of the truth that the Son of God has come by way of incarnation to express the Father. He could say in truth, “He that hath seen me, hath seen the Father”, John 14:9. This system is represented most clearly in our day by the Catholic System, but as these chapters indicate, she has daughters, and it is striking how that the Popes in recent times have reached out to the religions of the world. She is the mother of harlots.

In the last days Antichrist will set up his throne there as King of Babylon, and thus it will be the place where opposition to God is concentrated. Before He can rightfully set up His kingdom centred at Jerusalem, the Lord must deal with the rival city, which has been Satan’s headquarters from the beginning. It should be noticed that the woman in the vision does not ride on the beast, as if she is in control, but simply sits on it, as one who is prepared to be taken along by it. (In 1825 Pope Leo XII struck a medal bearing his image on one side, and on the other a woman holding a cross in her left hand, a cup in her right hand, and the inscription “Sedet super universum”, meaning, “The whole world is her seat”). This suits the purpose of the beast for a time, for he knows that superstitious religion has a hold upon men. But when the moment comes for him to reveal himself as the sole object of worship, (as Nebuchadnezzar did before him, Daniel 3), then he will no longer need the religion of Babylon in that way, and will destroy it. When he does this he unwittingly will be serving the Lord’s interests.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTER 18, VERSES 1 TO 24

18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

THE JUDGEMENT OF FINANCIAL BABYLON

Whereas in chapter 17 there is the emphasis on the alliance between politics and religion in opposition to God, in chapter 18 we are clearly shown that there is a commercial element to this rebellion. Those who mourn the destruction of Babylon are the merchants and shipmasters who by that time will control world trade. Thus God destroys the whole world system that is opposed to Him, and which has produced the Antichrist.

THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE, THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES, AS FOUND IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION CHAPTERS 1 AND 20

19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:

19:2 For true and righteous are His judgments: for He hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand.

19:3 And again they said, Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.

19:4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.

19:5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye His servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great.

19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and His wife hath made herself ready.

19:8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.

19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself.

19:13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God.

19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

19:15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

19:16 And He hath on His vesture and on His thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army.

19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of His mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

20:7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

20:8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

THE RETURN OF CHRIST TO JUDGE AND TO REIGN

Chapter 19:1-10 records events immediately prior to the coming of Christ as King of Kings. In verses 1-4 there is great joy expressed in heaven because of the judgement of the religious system that for so many centuries had deceived the people of the world.

In verses 5-8 we read of the preparation for the bride of the Lamb for the marriage of the Lamb.

In verse 9 John is assured that to be invited to the marriage supper is a blessed thing, and also that the things he had been guided to write were “the true sayings of God”, despite the awesome matters revealed in his book.

In verse 10 the apostle is so over-awed at the matters brought before him, that he fell at the feet of the angel who spoke to him. There was an immediate rebuke from the angel, as he disclaimed any glory for what had been revealed to John. This part of the prophetic writing ends appropriately with the truth that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy”. In other words, the spirit or essence of the prophetic writings is that Jesus, the despised Nazarene, is at the centre of them, and that God will bring to pass all His purpose through Him.
