SECTION 1
\n1:1-4\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> INTRODUCTION:\u00a0<\/strong> 1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The theme of the epistle is given in the words “of the word of life”, meaning\u00a0 “concerning the subject of (Divine) Life”. 2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The one who is Eternal Life personified has been manifested, seen, heard, reported, and shared. 3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The life of God expresses itself in the manifestation of light and love, and these two themes continue throughout the epistle.<\/p>\n

SECTION 2
\n1:5-2:2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> Christ’s life tells us God is light:
\nTHREE TESTS FOR THOSE WHO CLAIM TO BE LIVING (WALKING) IN THE LIGHT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First test<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 6,7<\/span><\/td>\n“If we say we walk in the light”.\u00a0 Those who pass the test do walk in light.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second test<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 8,9<\/span><\/td>\n“If we say we have no sin”.\u00a0 Those who pass the test confess their sins.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third test<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 10- 2:2<\/span><\/td>\n“If we say we have not sinned”.\u00a0 Those who pass the test do not deny sinning, and have an Advocate with the Father.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 3
\n2:3-11\u00a0<\/strong> Christ’s life shows us how to love:
\nTHREE CLAIMS BY\u00a0THOSE WHO\u00a0PROFESS TO KNOW THE LOVE OF GOD IN CHRIST<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First claim<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 3-5<\/span><\/td>\nHe that saith “I know Him”.\u00a0 Those who pass the test find God’s love reaches its goal in their hearts, verse 5.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second claim<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 6-8<\/span><\/td>\nHe that saith he abideth in Him.\u00a0 \u00a0 Those who pass this test walk as Christ walked, verse 6.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third claim<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 9-11<\/span><\/td>\nHe that saith he is in the light.\u00a0 Those who pass this test love their brothers, and do not stumble them, verse 10.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 4
\n2:12-27\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> The family of God is addressed according to maturity, after the general statement of verse 12.
\nTHREE STAGES OF MATURITY IN THE FAMILY OF GOD<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Verse 13(a)<\/span><\/td>\nFirst word to fathers<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Verse 13(b)<\/span><\/td>\nFirst word to young men.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Verse 13(c)<\/span><\/td>\nFirst word to infants.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Verse 14(a)<\/span><\/td>\nSecond word to fathers.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Verses 14(b)-17<\/span><\/td>\nSecond word to young men.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Verses 18-27<\/span><\/td>\nSecond word to infants.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The advice to the infants is so that they may grow into young men, and then into fathers. THE LEADING FEATURES OF SECTION FOUR ARE NOW DEVELOPED IN THE REMAINDER OF THE EPISTLE, SO THAT THIS GROWTH MIGHT TAKE PLACE, HENCE THE FIRST PHRASE OF THE NEXT SECTION IS “LITTLE CHILDREN”, ABIDE IN HIM”, VERSE 28.<\/strong> By little children the apostle means all the children of God, not just the infants.\u00a0 To abide in Him is to rest in what He is, and this is developed in the remainder of the epistle. The leading themes of the address to the infants are enlarged on in the rest of the epistle, and they are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
1.<\/span><\/td>\nAntichrist shall come.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
2.<\/span><\/td>\nAlready there are many antichrists.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
3.<\/span><\/td>\nBelievers have the Holy Spirit, and know all things.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
4.<\/span><\/td>\nThe deceivers deny the Father and the Son.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
5.<\/span><\/td>\nThere is the need to abide in Him.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 5
\n2:28-3:6<\/strong> The comings of Christ, past and present, are in contrast to the coming of Antichrist. The apostle does not want to be ashamed when Christ comes, so believers should heed his teaching, and live as Christ lived, so as to be to His praise when He comes again.
\nTHREE DUTIES FOR BELIEVERS SINCE CHRIST HAS MANIFESTED HIMSELF<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First duty<\/span><\/td>\n2:29<\/span><\/td>\nHe is righteous, so believers should be righteous also.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second duty<\/span><\/td>\n3:1-3<\/span><\/td>\nHe is pure, so believers should purify themselves.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third duty<\/span><\/td>\n3:4-6<\/span><\/td>\nIn Him is no sin, so believers should not sin.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 6
\n3:7-10(a)<\/strong> Development of the statement “already there are many antichrists”, as stated in 2:18. The mention of the presence of many antichrists leads to the thought of the need to resist their teachings about light and love.\u00a0 Key phrase: “Let no man deceive you”, 3:7. Verses 7-10(a)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Righteousness is the manifestation of God as light. Anti-christs deceive about righteousness.
\nTHREE CONTRASTS BETWEEN GOD’S CHILDREN AND THE ANTICHRISTS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First contrast<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 7<\/span><\/td>\nThe believer is like Christ, the unbeliever is like the Devil.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second contrast<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 8 and 9<\/span><\/td>\nThe Son of God came to destroy the works of the Devil.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third contrast<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 10(a)<\/span><\/td>\nThe believer is a child of God, antichrists are of the Devil.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 7
\nVerses 10(b)-24<\/strong> Verses 10(b)-24\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Those who are not righteous cannot love truly. The antichrists deceive about love.
\nTHREE THINGS CHRISTIAN LOVE SHOWS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First thing<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 10(b)-12<\/span><\/td>\nThe one who loves is righteous in practice, verse 12.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second thing<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 13 and 14<\/span><\/td>\nThe one who loves has passed from death to life, verse 14.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third thing<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 15-24<\/span><\/td>\nThe one who loves dwells in God, and He in him, verse 24.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 8
\n4:1-6\u00a0<\/strong> Believers have the Holy Spirit, and know all things, as stated in 2:20. The mention of the Spirit in verse 3:24 builds on the third theme of the address to the infants, namely the fact they have an unction (anointing) from the Holy One, and know all things; that is, they can distinguish between truth and error without false teachers helping them.\u00a0 The anti-christs are exposed by the Spirit. SECTION 8 IS A PARENTHESIS The anointing of the Spirit enables believers to respond to false prophets.
\nTHREE ABILITIES BELIEVERS HAVE BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE SPIRIT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First ability<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 1-3<\/span><\/td>\nThe Spirit enables the believer to confess Christ, verse 2.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second ability<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 4-5<\/span><\/td>\nThe Spirit enables the believer to overcome the false prophets.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third ability<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 6<\/span><\/td>\nThe believer is able to respond to the teaching of the apostles.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 9
\n4:7-21<\/strong> Return to the subject of love from 3:24, after the parenthesis of 4:1-6.
\nTHREE EXHORTATIONS TO LOVE AND THE REASONS BEHIND THEM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First exhortation<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 7 and 8<\/span><\/td>\nExhortation to love, because God is love, verse 7.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Section 10 leads on from the idea of confession of Jesus as the Son of God in 4:15, a confession which the anti-christs are not prepared to make.<\/span><\/p>\n

SECTION 10
\n5:1-5\u00a0<\/strong> THREE RESULTS OF BELIEVING THE TESTIMONY OF THE APOSTLES<\/strong> The anti-christs neither believe nor confess.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First result<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 1(a)<\/span><\/td>\nIt results in the new birth.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second result<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 1(b)-3<\/span><\/td>\nIt results in love to all others who are born of God.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third result<\/span><\/td>\nVerses 4 and 5<\/span><\/td>\nIt results in victory over the world.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SECTION 11
\n5:6<\/strong> THE THREEFOLD TESTIMONY ON EARTH<\/strong> The anti-christs reject this testimony<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
First testimony on earth<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 6<\/span><\/td>\nThe water of His baptism.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

First thing<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 18<\/span><\/td>\nWe know that believers have a nature that does not sin.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Second thing<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 19<\/span><\/td>\nWe know that there is a difference between believers and the world.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Third thing<\/span><\/td>\nVerse 20<\/span><\/td>\nWe know the Son of God came to give us understanding.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
